  • Peter Higgs, father of the so-called "God particle" and Nobel prize-winning physicist has died aged 94. He helped unravel one of the greatest enigmas in physics, earning his place alongside names like Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. The University of Edinburgh says he passed away peacefully in his home.
Higgs was famous for his groundbreaking theory from the 1960s, which proposed a new particle known as the Higgs boson. He argued that the boson helped bind the universe together by giving particles their mass. Decades later, his theory was proven by physicists working at the Large Hadron Collider at Cern in Switzerland.
He was honored with the Nobel Prize for physics in 2013.

It still hasn't been observed. It's just a proposition they hope fills the missing energy signal in the standard model.
And oh yes, of course, if it's true then the billions spent on toroidal experiments can be justified. But it still hasn't been observed and never will be because even in the proposition it doesn't exist in the universe today. So even the analogy 'god particle' is a contrivance.

i read about his theories and amendments in the standard model, spent my childhood and youth years in understanding the fundamentals of it. Higgs field was always a fascinating concept for me, which was finally bagged by the newly discovered Bosons, turned out to be the Higgs Bosons. I was surprised to learn the missing pieces of standard model finally fitting together with the actual discovery in 2012. I was in final year of school and I was sure that he would be awarded a Nobel for his 50 year old work, for sure... and he actually did get that award later on. Since then, every opportunity I get, I try to teach other people about the Higgs field and how its interaction gives all particles their respective mass.

The name boson is in tribute to Satyendra Nath Bose who developed the quantum statistics of bosons that describe particles like the photon, gluon, W & Z particles as well as the Higgs boson. Higgs developed the theory of the Higgs field, along with others such as Englert (who received the same Nobel prize with Higgs) and Brout.

@@tonywells6990 Let's not forget Gerald Guralnik, Carl R. Hagen and Tom Kibble. They also worked at the same topic. But only Englert and Higgs became old enough to get the Nobel prize.
