- Peter Higgs, father of the so-called "God particle" and Nobel prize-winning physicist has died aged 94. He helped unravel one of the greatest enigmas in physics, earning his place alongside names like Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. The University of Edinburgh says he passed away peacefully in his home.
Higgs was famous for his groundbreaking theory from the 1960s, which proposed a new particle known as the Higgs boson. He argued that the boson helped bind the universe together by giving particles their mass. Decades later, his theory was proven by physicists working at the Large Hadron Collider at Cern in Switzerland.
He was honored with the Nobel Prize for physics in 2013.

My brother passed away today. He is in good company in that respect. My brother was very much the engineer not a physicist. :-) His work continues, orbiting Earth in the ISS. He led the APU project.
wow. smart guy :)
I’m sorry to hear man. Love headed your way
What is remembered, lives. Thank you for sharing with us, and may you know peace.
This meant a lot. Thanks for sharing your story.
Sorry for your loss, May i ask, how old was he?
RIP Mr. Higgs. Hats off to a life dedicated to something you knew but had to prove. Science at its finest.
I am glad the Higgs particle was discovered in his lifetime and he got a reward he always deserved. For a certain generation, Higgs particle was the holy grail for physicists.
It still is, but we have a hard dead end but there is so much to uncover. Higgs boson is still a mystery.
For reference, the Higgs was just a small bump on a graph at CERN.
Actually they should have called it the "Higgs-Englert-Brout" particle.
It still hasn't been observed. It's just a proposition they hope fills the missing energy signal in the standard model.
And oh yes, of course, if it's true then the billions spent on toroidal experiments can be justified. But it still hasn't been observed and never will be because even in the proposition it doesn't exist in the universe today. So even the analogy 'god particle' is a contrivance.

This is how one makes life meaningful, to contribute or build something longer lasting than one's life. His life will live on in the annals of science, spoken by future scientists, when almost all others are forgotten. Thank you Dr. Higgs! It's only a small minority of people like you that moves the entire mankind forward.
When the sun goes red giant none of this will matter.
@@copernicofelinis actually no, because in the end the higgs boson is "responsible" for the sun becoming a red giant (i.e. giving the sun its mass). Other stars etc. will continue to exist and have mass because of the boson, the universe isn't all about the earth and us humans :)
@@wga4139 well, but the memory of what he did will evaporate with the human race. And even if we will find a way to travel to other stars (maybe in the form of robots) there is always the thermal death awaiting us. So, in the end...

Rest Well and thank you for your vision and work sir🙏🏽
Good to see Joseph Incandela. I remember watching the feed when he showed the combined CMS ZZ & gamma-gamma results with the combined significance of 5.0 sigma. A huge amount of work had been done by the CMS and Atlas teams to get it over the threshold.
i read about his theories and amendments in the standard model, spent my childhood and youth years in understanding the fundamentals of it. Higgs field was always a fascinating concept for me, which was finally bagged by the newly discovered Bosons, turned out to be the Higgs Bosons. I was surprised to learn the missing pieces of standard model finally fitting together with the actual discovery in 2012. I was in final year of school and I was sure that he would be awarded a Nobel for his 50 year old work, for sure... and he actually did get that award later on. Since then, every opportunity I get, I try to teach other people about the Higgs field and how its interaction gives all particles their respective mass.
RIP
Rest in peace Dr. Higgs.

The moment when the Hadron Collider confirmed that his 'Boson' particle theory was correct was a huge leap forward from theoretical to pure and applied Physics. It was beautiful when he was honoured at Hadron for his advanced perceptions.

Can you replace "his Boson" with "their Boson"? They were honoured, not he.😉

Not many physicists can live to see their theories proven right
You have no clue about the scientific process: theories cannot be proven true. they can only be falsified.
Newtons gravitation theory looked very good for many years, and for many day to day activities we use it, but newton's theory has been proven wrong, and replaced by Einstein's general relativity theory, which itself may be invalid as it seems incompatible with quantum mechanics.
Proofs are only valid in mathematics.

3:21 the term he used was “that goddamn particle” because of how hard out was to find, I think it was an editor that suggested the change. It has nothing to do with God
It was Nobel prize winner Leon Max Lederman who titled his book "The goddamn particle" and the editor didn't want to harm religious feelings. So the editor demanded to alter the title.

My thoughts to his family and friends. A truly great mind has been lost.
As merely a popular science reader, my basic understanding is that every quantum particle has a field. I also understood that while Physics could explain gravity, that it could not explain mass - until now apparently. Two things I don't quite understand are the discovery or verification of the Higgs Boson, at CERN, and if true, Einstein's abandonment of Quantum Mechanics. Was the Higgs Boson verified, and did Einstein abandon Quantum Mechanics ?

Higgs is the name of the particle. Boson is the type of particles. Bosons consist of photons, gluons, W bosons, Z bosons and Higgs bosons.
@@slimjimnyc270 Oh right... Thank's for that... 🙏🏻🙂👍🏻
The name boson is in tribute to Satyendra Nath Bose who developed the quantum statistics of bosons that describe particles like the photon, gluon, W & Z particles as well as the Higgs boson.
