I’m over here in Louisiana and we’re late season where I’m at. The woods I hunt is hilly/ ridges and basically 70% thick and 30% open. We have more thickets than open woods. I’ve found they prefer specific types of thickets. They don’t like the clear cuts and pine thickets later in the season bc it seems like everything is brown and dead. Even though it’s thick there’s no browse. Seems like they’re piling up in our bottom thickets. Example of what I’m talking about is there’s one specific bottom that had a tornado come through a few years ago and it’s impenetrable. Lol. The difference in pine thickets and this one is there’s so many different types of species of plants like green brier and it’s all still green. Bad thing is there aren’t any trees to get in. Bc they’re all shredded and the deer are getting right in the middle. By the time the deer get to me it’s just barely too dark to see. Plus I’ve noticed I can hear them moving around 30 minutes before sundown close to me but it’s so thick you can’t see them and they will wait to come out till it’s too dark. Having a really hard time rn with this lol We also had a drought this year so
I’m in Mississippi central my private peace is exactly the same way impenetrable. But they have an interstate type trail through it. Heard some some soft grunts in there two days ago but never showed himself. They get a doe in there and can’t ever get em to come out. Bumped a doe outta there last year and jumped a nice eight point and a doe out.
Great information. I’m a retired military guy. Now I’m settled in Alabama, which is close to home for me. Hunting was always hard to do with the deployments and training. I’ve hunted local now for a couple of years and I’ve found hunters on public land now are very different than when I was younger. I can spend time scouting and find great spots without seeing anyone. I pass on decent bucks waiting for the rut, knowing I’m in a good spot. Then the rut comes and people come out of the woodwork and screw everything up. Really frustrating when I’m trying to set my kids up on a decent buck! I can see concentrating on early and late season is the better way to hunt public property.
Definitely on the struggle bus. I find even super fresh scat, but cant even seem to bump deer. Im sure a lot has to do with how limited my time is to scout. Really appreciate the encouragement to just keep pushing and think multi-year.
Do you guys see anything in common when setting up these trail cameras on travel corridors on the locations being similar as in certain Terran features they are set up on?
Pretty new to hunting didnt get one last ye Got my first deer this yr just a 3 point nothing too crazy. But now im left with a doe tag and a buck tag for 4+ points a side…. 2 weeks after i shot the lil guy i had a nice 6 point walk in front of me and it hurt my feelings knowing i couldnt take him but it just wasnt worth the consequences for it. Hopefully well cross paths again he was a nice 6 point built like an 8 just no brow tines
Moral of the story... I walk it out, I walk it out, I walk it out, I walk it out! East side walk it out, West side walk it out, North side walk it out, South side walk it out!
Great show and guest! A lot of the info covered here is applicable on my local public. Keep it up!
Wow ! Awesome content, and didn't need a PHD to understand, thanks, very much appreciated
