essentially, if a MAC is more than 100% it cannot be given (and is very weak). the patient still needs to breathe Oxygen, so if 100% of what they are getting is that anesthetic they are not receiving any oxygen. For example, N2O (laughing gas) has a MAC of 104%. This cannot be given because the patient will be receiving no oxygen. So it must be used in combination with something else. Hope this makes sense
@@mohiltrivedi8634 A whole year since I've seen this, thanks for the reminder that MAC exists. Sort of understanding, so perhaps we should look at the opposite case. 2% MAC then corresponds to only 2% of the air being breathed contains the drug? Is that it? Do you know why high mac corresponds to lower potency ("very weak")?
@@michaeletzkorn exactly! a higher MAC means that more of the drug has to be inhaled to have the same effect. therefore a higher MAC means a lower potency. and obviously the more drug you inhale the more side effects and unwanted properties come with the drug as well.
@@mohiltrivedi8634 104 % N2O required to produce the same anaesthetic effect as of 0.75 % halothane. So halothane is more potent. But N2O rapidly diffuses into blood than halothane, and ultimately reaches brain. So doesn't that make N2O a more potent anaesthetic?? I couldn't get this contradiction..
The music in the background is really really unnecessary and distracting.
You have GOT to turn up the volume when recording this...
I still have no idea what MAC actually is a measure of. Since it's given as a percentage. percentage of what to over what?
Its the percentage of the inspired air

The background music were annoying I couldn’t concentrate, otherwise, it was a well simplified explanation, thank you.
Low M.A.C = High Potency
High M.A.C. = Low Potency
Low MAC= more lipid-soluble
Really good video, thanks
So useful for a student ODP, Thank you
At no point in any trust in the country will the ODP be gassing patients. This is doctor level stuff and a complete waste of your time to learn.
Excellent video ... Thanks so much for the pleasant explanation. Love the accent.
I love the background music
I would think that hypercapnea would decrease MAC since hypercapnic narcosis can knock people out
MAC changes with age......
I was here to find out the reason behind that so if anyone knows please let me know ...........
Stop that background irritating music and talk clearly
There are more resources on the website that explain how each volatile gas has it's own MAC value (%) - see links in the video description :-)
Propofology thank you!!
Age does impact MAC, even you mention age as a changing indicator for MAC
I am also confused by this. He says it doesn't , then it does
@@carlosspiceyweaner4995 it does, younger pts need more and older pts need less. 10 years younger = 6%increase in MAC
I am having trouble understanding your words because of the music.😢
Thank youuu!
The background music does more harm than good
Thx but you speak very fast💔
Why would you add music to this video, you can't hear what you're saying. Take the music out and stop reading off a script.
thankyou so much!
