  • Welcome back to The Daily Aviation for a feature on the heaving lifting C-5M Super Galaxy and the crazy number of landing gear wheels it takes to land a plane carrying hundreds of thousands of pounds of cargo.

    Great video!! Such a relief and pleasure to watch it without a music sound track. I'm surprised no one has come up with a way to pre-spin the tires before landing. Going from zero to landing RPM is brutal.

    I'll never forget the day a C-5M flew over my house on a low altitude pass. I thought the window panes were going to fall out and the picture frames fall off the walls. It looked like an entire city passing overhead, and I thought at any minute, it was going so slow it was just going to fall out of the sky. Unbelievable! I live in the Appalachian Mountains and occasionally have F-15s doing low passes practicing fire missions. What an awesome sight. But when this Behemoth flew over, it was awesome in its own right! Thank you to the crew for an unforgettable experience. 👍

    I am still sad about the loss of the An-225.. The C5 is great, but it is dated. It still get's it done, as does the C17. I know,...- aircraft built for specific tasks during specific times. The 225 though holds a special place in my heart. The amount of engineering is absolutely amazing.

    The C-5 didn't replace the C-141. They flew during the same period until the 141 was retired. The newest cargo aircraft is the C-17.

    They looked like they were just hanging in the sky. Everyone would stop and look.

    8:05 Why do they spray water on the plane after landing??

    • @joejordan1259
      @joejordan1259 Год назад +3

      Oh yeah it costs a lot so they try to keep them clean and if.. there's any radioactivity fall out on there they can wash it down And if they're clean they get better mileage from the fuel and they fly better less weight

      That portion of the vid was taken at Andersen AFB in Guam. The aircraft there are regularly rinsed off with fresh water to remove the salt water residue that builds up on the aircraft since Guam is a tropical island in the Pacific, just like Hawaii.

    B-1B on alert can launch in minutes but ... if WWIII breaks out, can it load nuclear cruise missiles in time to launch before the base is destroyed?

    • @tomcline5631
      @tomcline5631 Год назад +1

      When it's on that 30 day alert,it's loaded. When I was a kid the B-52s were nuked up All the time and 1\3 of the fleet was flying one of many alert orbits,1\3 was ready to take off immediately,and 1\3 was having whatever maintenance done that was needed. We lived under the "aluminum umbrella" up til the late 80s.
      Nowadays I'm sure some are nuked up and cocked and locked on immediate alert status,along with the B-1s,but I'm sure it ain't like it was!
