The response you both gave for the Q&A is so inspiring. Those are very powerful comments! I totally agree. Why should you worry about some random pass-byers when it should be you who need to shape your life and live your dream. Moreover staring is just out of curiousity or even admiration and envy. I wish you the best of best and continue to help, encourage, and inspire young people who feel trapped. You two are awesome.

***** What an amazing comment, thank you so much!
I think almost all of us worry about this/have worried about it to some degree, but when you really think about it it's true--what's the point of worrying about what complete strangers think? I still have to tell myself this often, but I'm a lot better than I used to be, haha ^^

I watched your documentary episode and it was so inspiring. What I could understand of it anyway. It seemed like Kyuho's mom was upset when he wanted you to go outside, and even though she told you to go, she seemed bothered. The part where you helped grandpa down the hill was so sweet.

Hi I watched the tv special via the links you provided. Your family seemed very nice. Your mother is very pretty! I think you did very good Sarah and that you will become part of the family. All families are awkward to fit into at first. I knew that my mother in law had finally accepted me when she yelled and bossed me around like all the other "children". Thank you for sharing.

규호s voice totally reminds me or Matthew Mcconaughey sometimes hahaha. I just came across your guys channel and I am absolutely hooked haha. My boyfriend is also Korean so it is nice to see another girl from North America going through the same things I go through. Like meeting the family and such, which (at least for me) gives me so much anxiety since my Korean is fluent yet. I have already met his parents and aunt more than once and have a good relationship with them, but this summer I will meet EVERYONE....ahhh...super scary. Would love to hear some tips about what I should do or be aware of haha.
Also, the whole staring thing makes me self conscious too. My boyfriend just told me to think of it as they are looking at us the same way people look at a puppy XD

Hi guys! I always have to comment on your videos. I just love them! I agree, if you love someone it shouldn't matter what others think. Love the cherry blossom. Sarah, can you please share your beauty secrets? What are the good products to use? I loved your answer! I study Asien economy and politics and learn chinese an korean so whenever people try to get to know me they already judge. Manga girl, kpop girl etc. I learned to not give a single thought about stuff like that and I reached a point where my passion gets acknowledged and it impresses people. Basically you can't see the whole picture just because you have a few pieces of the puzzle. So don't worry what other people who only know pieces might think. It's almost 100 percent not true anyway. Celebrate yourself as the person you really are and stay strong :) ( sorry long comment =D)

I have finally caught up with all the vlogs! I've yet to see the documentary but once it's subbed, I'll hopefully get to it. My question is what was a cultural shock to you when you either came back to Korea after an extended period of time (Kyuho) or like Sarah, who arrived having never been (before your first time)?
Seriously enjoying the vlogs, they're really well done! :)

Wahhh where's the link to the documentary!? :(
Anyway, it is always great to watch your videos.
I am from the Caribbean and I am dating a korean guy. His family is SO accepting of me, and they were very welcoming because I have tried my best to learn how to respect and follow their cultures within their own boundaries and reunions.
It is a whole other story when we walk in the street. We are a very cutesie couple, I guess you could say. We are always hand in hand and my boyfriend is always smiling and flirting with me so people over in my island look at us weirdly and some even disgusted... It is sad. But your words give us hope! Thank you!

I plan on coming back to korea early next year to live and work *fingers crossed*...I'm enjoying your video's lol I'm yet to post all my vlogs up I only have a couple up but the editing is so time consuming plus I just use the basic program to upload. In due time I guess. So where are you from sarah? where in Canada...I would guess toronto? I live in Ottawa~ also before you first went to japan, were you into manga and anime? How did you decide to go to japan. I came to korea because I was curious...I'm into kdrama's and etc so I wanted to see korea for myself. I enjoyed my trip and I can't wait to be back ^^

    • @2hearts1seoul
      @2hearts1seoul  9 лет назад

Aldehyde Hi! Thanks so much for the compliment--so glad you enjoy the videos :D You're so right, it's reeeeally time consuming, and even with the two of us doing our share of editing, the editing process can take about 6-7 hours on average. I'm actually from Halifax! ^^ I used to love anime/manga in middle school--I still like it of course, but I very rarely indulge in it like I used to when I was in my early teens. I went to Japan when I was 18. I met a lot of Japanese and Korean friends who were studying abroad at my university, so they were the ones who really influenced me to go. I was actually planning to teach in Korea for only 1 year and then go to Japan an teach after that, but I met Kyuho, haha. It all worked out for the best though--totally didn't expect that one :D

I really enjoyed your vids but just watched the documentary and got turned off... Although there were some hiccups here and there, I think that, as foreigner who's coming into a new culture, Sarah did a great job with, what seemed like, little preparation she received. The one thing I would suggest is to be more... culturally aware and sensitive. Like, even though it was awkward and everyone kept saying the air was awkward, you probably shouldn't have just left your grandfather-in-law in the back while y'all were walking through the market (your mother-in-law already told you that he'd probably like it if you were to call him grandfather etc) and realizing that your mother-in-law gave you water/mud-resistant shoes while wearing sneakers should have halted the comments about them being too big (seemed like she was a little offended when she mentions that there's nothing you can do about it). 4 years here is a long time and it can make a lot of native Koreans question why you've not learned more than the basics... so I'm glad you're studying Korean ^^ I thought it was funny when your father-in-law kept reassuring people that you're studying really hard haha. The problem I have is with Kyuho... and this is not a personal attack but you do realize that trying to shield Sarah from filial duties, inherent in all Eastern cultures, will not help her transition into your family, right? It didn't make sense to take Sarah out of the kitchen when she does need to learn all of what your mom and your aunties have to offer. You're mom would have probably felt more embarrassed and saddened if she were the "큰 어머님"... I mean, look at her face when you demanded them to let Sarah come out as quickly as possible... Sarah, it wasn't that they didn't want you to help, it was that your mother-in-law was already pissed off at what Kyuho did and the other sister-in-laws were only trying to ease the tension by telling you to leave. Of course anyone would feel bad if their partner were alone in a situation where he/she didn't fluently speak and or completely understand the language being used, but Sarah needs to learn for your whole family to accept her as part of the family... everyone may say that marrying a "foreigner" is fine but resentment will build if you don't allow Sarah to learn what's needed to be learned as a daughter-in-law AND if you don't teach Sarah what she needs to know going into culturally significant events like 설날 or 추석... just my two cents... My questions are: "What does it mean to be fully accepted into both of your families?" and "What things need to be fully realized to allow for a genuine incorporation of both partners into all familial parties?"

Wow, I think this is the longest comment we've ever gotten! Thanks for watching--you made a lot of great points! I do have to say though, the way some of these scenes were edited made things look much different than reality.
"You probably shouldn't have just left your grandfather-in-law in the back while y'all were walking through the market".
The film crew actually asked us to film it this way so they could get interviews from both parties separately.
"4 years here is a long time and it can make a lot of native Koreans question why you've not learned more than the basics"
Yes it is, and you're absolutely right about this. My Korean skills in particular are still very weak. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to come here as a student to formally study the language, and my work schedule has kept me extremely busy for the last 4 years. Aside from that, I have no excuses. I could have done better. Actually, I didn't want to do this program at first for this very reason, because I didn't want to broadcast to the world how terrible my Korean skills are even after all of this time. Since I learn language best in a classroom environment, I'm hoping I can someday be lucky enough have enough money (and time) to attend Korean language classes in the near future.
"It didn't make sense to take Sarah out of the kitchen when she does need to learn all of what your mom and your aunties have to offer."
Actually, Kyuho's mother encouraged me weeks before this was filmed to also head outside and help cook the meat. She is actually very liberal, and even though it didn't show it in the documentary several our male relatives were also in the kitchen a lot of the time helping with the work, because she firmly believes everyone should pitch in.
"I mean, look at her face when you demanded them to let Sarah come out as quickly as possible..."
We all actually laughed sooo hard at this part when it aired, because it looked so incredibly dramatic when it really wasn't at all, it was all in the editing, lol ^^
"Sarah, it wasn't that they didn't want you to help, it was that your mother-in-law was already pissed off at what Kyuho did and the other sister-in-laws were only trying to ease the tension by telling you to leave."
No one was pissed off at all. Our aunts were really camera shy and wanted a bit of a break. They told me to go and rest instead of helping in the kitchen because I wasn't feeling well and I had a fever at the time. I was really sick the morning after Chuseok and it took me a while to recover, so they were just looking out for me.
You make a lot of excellent points here, and I agree with a lot of them. I'm probably going to continue making mistakes unintentionally, and I'll probably never be the perfect Korean wife because I'm not Korean. All I can do is try my best to embrace Korean culture without completely sacrificing my own identity in the process. I don't expect Kyuho's family to sacrifice all of their cultural values to accommodate me, and in turn they don't expect me to sacrifice all of mine. I am still Canadian after all. We are two individuals who come from completely different cultural backgrounds, so the best we can do as a family is to try to meet each other halfway and respect one another ^^

+MyMsRamos They do, but you pretty much have to be unemployed to be available for the class time slots, and since I work full time, it's not doable.
