I remember watching Balto!(Why is it that animated movies, like Batlo, make me cry(happily)in the end:I guess 'cause I wanted to continue the story, idk.)
I've seen all of the movies on your list (including the 2 honorable mentions). It has been a really long time since I've seen Balto, Thumbelina, Anastasia, and The Swan Princess though and I only ever saw the 2nd SP movie which was pretty O.K. But without a doubt my favorite animated Non-Disney movie is The Secret Of Kells from Ireland. I wanted to see this movie soo bad when I found out it was being released in American theaters back in 2010, but was depressed to find out that it was only a limited release and that my theater didn't show it. I had no idea when it was coming out on DVD so it just sort of faded from memory. But several months ago, RUclipsr Matt Brunet (AniMat) did a review of it and I was reminded of my interest in it. After watching the review I looked for it on Netflix, found it, watched it, and LOVED it!!!!!!!! Anyone who hasn't seen this movie should check it out. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it over the past several months and I still can't get enough of it. If you have Netflix then watch it and if you don't you can get a free month of it by going to netflix.com/jacksfilms. Honestly this movie is a must watch for anyone. Watch it now you won't regret it.
The person who made Anastasia was one of Disney's best animators, thats why the animation is so good! Don Bluth's movies... THE ANIMATION! I can never think of a Disney movie that can compete with Anastasia (in my opinion), it just raised the bars too high.
I was about to be really disappointed if Anastasia wasn't on the list. I grew up with a lot of girl cousins and an older sister so I blame them for me loving these types of movies
Price of Egypt is not only my favorite non-Disney animated film, but also my number 1 animated film ever! The voice acting, the animation, the MUSIC, all so amazing!!!
I LOOOOOOVEEEE ANASTASIA! As a kid, I watched it weekly ever since my mom got me the tape. Now as a 21 year old, I still watch it once every month or so. LOVE LOVE. You should TOTALLY watch Quest for Camelot is you love Anastasia. Songs, female heroine, storyline etc. all so on point.
5. Anastasia 4. Howl's Moving Castle 3. Ponyo 2. Spirited Away (These 3 Ghibli's are interchangeable depending on my mood) FRICKING TIED FIRST PLACE (because I can't choose) Prince of Egypt, Land Before Time and The Iron Giant. I love the music and animation of Prince of Egypt more than ANY animated movie. I love dinosaurs. And I love the style and heart of Iron Giant. So I can never choose between those three.
Totally agree with Anastasia being on Broadway. The music and the story are just too good to be quite unknown by many people. I was, am and will always be completely in love with all the songs.
1. The Iron Giant 2. Shrek 1 & 2 3. Kung Fu Panda 4. Despicable me 5. How to Train your dragon 1 & 2 *Prince of Egypt, Anastasia, and Swan Princess were also all really good.
Top 3 non Disney 3 epic 2013. Voice by Beyoncé 2 home 2015 voice by Rihanna 1 hotel Transylvania voice by Selena Gomez Honorable. Mention Despicable me 2
Great picks for the top 2. Those are some of the best. I'll have to think of my top 5... Hhhmmmm... this is going to be hard, especially if I don't add Anime.
OH MY GOD! I LOVE HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON!!!! (I've seen it 26 times, and I can recite the entire movie from one line, and from the sound track. Yeah...my addiction to this movie is pretty bad...)
Isaac Olalokiki I know!!! It's actually going to be a trilogy!!! I'm so excited for the day when I can say, "Let's have a How to Train Your Dragon marathon!"
My Favorite non-Disney Animated Movies: 5 - Hellboy: Blood & Iron 4 - GI Joe: the movie 3 - Transformers the movie 2 - Cowboy Bebop 1 - Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Oh my gosh, havent watched The Swan Princes in over 10 years! We have it on tape back at my parent's house. And you just reminded me of the For Longer Then Forever song. Wow.
Other really good ones: 1. Land Before Time 2. Rock-A-Doodle 3. Iron Giant 4. Fern Gully the Last Rainforest 5. Secret of Nimh 6. Fire and Ice 7. We're Back Dinosaur Story 8. Berserk Golden Age Arc Trilogy (people complain a lot about the CGI, bbut it has a very nice story!) 9. Age of the Great Dinosaurs 10. The Last Unicorn 11. The Book of Life 12. The Flight of Dragons Downloading Prince of Egypt and Swan Princess now (catching up!) XD
The Swan Princess is the first and last movie me and my dad have watched together. I remember when I asked him " what about this one" ♥♥♡♡ HE IS NOT DEAD!Its been awhile since I have seen him!
fun fact :Anastasia was based on a real story, she was a real Russian princess who's family was killed but no one knows what happend to her, Rasputin was also a real person but he was only part of the reason why the family were killed, he was a horrible man but he wasn't as evil as he is in the film!
I think the opinions on how "bad" Rasputin really was greatly differ within the historians and people in general, I am more inclined to think he is just "misunderstood". And yes, Anastasia has apparantly been found as well, she was killed along with the rest of the family. The story was mainly based around the impostors who were tryign to claim to be her and they probably just decided to make the "but what if" plot, which turned out great in every aspect. And Rasputin was dead quite some time before the revolutiona nd the subsequent execution of the royal family. But yeah, sad story indeed :(
It's interesting, as Anastasia is based on the real Russian Grand Duchess. The animated movie is in turn based on the 1950's movie of the same name that has almost the exact same plot, except I think the love interest has a different age and name, and Anastasia a bit older in the 50's version. I liked that the movie was a bit darker, and yet also so magical. I was surprised to learn she was a real person. Learning about the real Anastasiya Romanova of Russia really kinda made the movie sad to me because she didn't actually survive, and I know some relatives of the Romanovs actually hate both movies because they paint Anastasiya's life as a fairy tale, instead of the tragic death she suffered. I also found it interesting that Rasputin and Anastasiya actually got along, and were close. When she died, she was found to have a locket with his picture in it. Actually, there is another Anastasia movie, but it focuses on Bartok the albino bat, and it's not clear if it is a prequel or a sequel, but he encounters the famous Russian witch, Babba Yaga. The movie is called "Bartok the Magnificent."
congrats, katie. you got like ten songs stuck in my head... some from prince of egypt, some from anastasia. i used to sing both of the lullabies in those two movies to my kitten... until he got ran over... now whenever i hear those songs i have to hold back tears... but i still love them.
It's hard for me to make a top 10 or top 5 of Non-Disney animated movies, so I'm just going to say all (or most) of the ones I love: The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, An American Tail, Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, all four Shrek movies (Yeah, I love the third and fourth ones, so what?), Madagascar, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, Corpse Bride, Rio, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Simpsons Movie, Hotel Transylvania, Race For Your Life Charlie Brown, A Man Called Flintstone, Charlotte's Web, The Secret of Nimh, and if we're also talking ones that have a mix of animation and live-action, Space Jam.
OHMYGOD I've wanted to see The Last Unicorn soo bad but I have no idea where to find it. I don't know if they ever released it on DVD or Blu-Ray. Help please.
Anastasia was great loved watching it as a kid and it still holds up today. Music was amazing and the characters wowed you in every moment of the film. even the spin off bartok the magnificent was funny and lovable. I agree it would make an Excellent Broadway show or even a awesome live action motion picture =).I almost thought you were not going to mention this one but glad you did. Like always great taste!
In the dark of the night I was tossing and turning...and the nightmare I had was as bad as can be... It scared me out of my wits a corpse falling to bits, then I opened my eyes and the nightmare was me. This was my favorite villain song of all time.
I have a really large variety of favourite non Disney films... 1. SHREK 2. SHREK 2 3. SHREK THE THIRD 4. SHREK FOREVER AFTER 5. SHREK THE HALLS TV SPECIAL
Yes, Even I've adored your top two movies Swan Princess and Anastasia and used to sing those songs whenever on the road, as a boy of ten. Yes those two indeed would reach top two.I like to add Rio as no3 perhaps,Shrek as no 4. NICE VIDEO.
Anastasia is my favorit to, the songs are amezing, exciting that it happened in reality, Anastasia had relatives who not only fled to Paris but also to Denmark. I wonder what happened to Anastasia and Dimitri, after they ran away. Love The Prince of Egypt its a good movie, the scene where they cross the Red Sea is WOW extremely well made. Both films have great music.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! THE PRINCE OF EGYPT IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE EVER! Fantastic music, awesome animation. I know every word from every song even the Hebrew parts. Thank you for including it one your list!

One of my favorite animated films growing up was "The Sea Prince and the Fire Child". Yeah, it had a really bitter-sweet ending, but it was still awesome.
when i saw how to train your dragon 2 dont wanna spoil it but i cried secretly while watching the movie after a very sad scene. i could tell that this is the saddest animated movie of all. in the first one i nearly cried when hiccup and astrid were flying together and with its romantic backround music
2 Honorable mentions are Thumbelina and Balto!! 2 awesome awesome movies as well!
I used to watch Balto all the time!
Balto was the first movie I watched in english and I understood it (my fist language is spanish). I watched it on my ESL class. It was so good! :D

Rasputin was a friend of the Tsar and his wife. Other family members didn't like his influence. So totally different than in the movie.

It's interesting, as Anastasia is based on the real Russian Grand Duchess. darkangel64593 Rasputin was a creeper...I think he wanted all of Nicky's girls(his wife/daughter) on his arms.
yes, he was a creepy old perv, but he was still beloved by Anastasiya, and practically worshipped by Aleksandra Feodorovna (Anastasiya's mother).
darkangel64593 Which is also true..
I know the history
Good list.
congrats, katie. you got like ten songs stuck in my head... some from prince of egypt, some from anastasia. i used to sing both of the lullabies in those two movies to my kitten... until he got ran over... now whenever i hear those songs i have to hold back tears... but i still love them.
