Btw, my Grandma, bless her soul, taught me @ a very young age that spiders, snakes, praying mantis, & other garden creatures were our friends. Because of her teachings, I grew up liking, even loving, creatures others tend to fear. ❤

That black snake is gorgeous! I’m so grateful that you appreciate and protect your helpful garden reptiles. It makes me sad when people harm snakes. I totally understand not wanting any harmful snakes around. But our nonvenemous snake friends do so much good for keeping down garden pests. Here in western Washington we’ve only got garter snakes. But I do everything I can to create habit for them. They will eat slugs, which are my number one pest. With the extremely wet, cool spring we had, the slugs are hammering my plants this year. I literally pray for more snakes! 🙏🏻 🐍

Pineapple Brandy coleus would look amazing because it's bright chartreuse but it has those deep purple stems and accents that would pick up on the Newly Noir. I would love to have a friendly snake in my garden to feast on the voles! Of course it's too cold for poisonous snakes where I live so they're all harmless.

Wow, what a beautiful space! Love all the colors and layers and the backdrop of the loropetalum and the thuja is perfection! When working in my garden two weeks ago I surprised when I turned around to find a copperhead. I'm not a fan of snakes but I hear that black snakes will eat the poisonous copperheads so if I had a choice the black snake would be my friend 🙂

    • @kandidag1293

Good morning Jenny, thank you for the tour of the cottage garden, it is absolutely beautiful. I really enjoy your channel. I garden along the Gulf Coast of Alabama in zone 8b. I am spoiled with wonderful rich soil in my garden. I recently re-worked a garden bed in a family home in Tennessee zone 7b - and WOW - my awe of you has grown by leaps and bounds. Clay soil is NO JOKE!! It almost got the best of me as we had to work in tons of compost just to get a plantable medium for the PW Little Limes and Limelight Primes we were installing. I am not sure how you and Jerry do it but props to you and the good people of North Carolina and Tennessee. I am much more appreciative of my soil in South Alabama now. 😊

Jenny, your vegetable garden area is looking absolutely gorgeous! I can't wait to see how it fills in over the next few weeks. Yesterday, while I was planting up some of my large planters in the front yard, I saw my first hummingbird of the season! I made up some hummingbird nectar, filled a feeder, and hung it outside this morning. Today, I'm going to the greenhouses to hunt for some cuphea plants, and I need to buy more sugar to feed my hummers. To me, it's always such a delightful surprise to see the first hummingbird of the season! Have a wonderful week! ~Margie

And of course they would come back each year.🌺

I’ve got lots of zinnia volunteers coming up in a garden box, plus more seeds I can plant 🙌🏻

Maybe a perennial(& evergreen) behind the dark Coleus would look good... carex everillo would contrast wonderfully and give you a different texture in that flower bed😁

Maybe plant some of the lime colored coleus behind the dark ones!

I plant clemone as a barrier plant for my deer herd. The smell keeps them away. I plant it by seed so the Proven Winners odorless variety wouldn't work well for me. Agastache works well too.

I love hearing about Brenna with your gardening. We recently got a puppy who loves to run through our flower beds, so I would love to know the best puppy-durable plants you recommend.

I love you said they are sister gardens, not identical sisters gardens.
Last year I named my formerly hydrangea garden my "sisters' garden" because I've added more shrubs, perennials and annuals. Three were 'Queen of Sweden' DA roses planted in memory of my mother and her two (living) sisters. They're half Swedish. 🤭 Unfortunately, it looks like one of the sisters didn't survive our harsh MN winter. I'm not sure if the other two reverted back to the root stock. Time will tell.
I can't believe I have restrained myself from buying annuals yet. I'm still working on preparing beds (weeding) for them. I hope stores restock so I can get some of those beauties you planted.
I know you'll update us later in the season when they show all their glory.
I'm not a daylily fan so I planted something in front to hide the foliage. But I look forward to seeing the white blooms of the 'Sunday Gloves' daylily I planted late last year.

I tell my shade seeking dog..." you owe me $7", as she laid on a freshly planted astilbe.

HiJenny, I think you need something white, maybe Diamond Frost , I believe it can take sun or shade. I love your gardens and enjoy your videos very much! 🥰

I saw a black snake last year. I hope he is still around. Also last year’s green snake is still absent. But, I have seen a corn snake so far this year.

I think the Saturn Sunflowers would look great behind the Newly Noir Coleus. IMO

Hai, can you please plant veronicastrum behind the coleus? My garden is too smal for them. They would provide a great backdrop for your coleus and tie in the trees behind them. I think the white ones would look great especially late in the evening but the pink or purple ones would also look great and maybe a better choice considering the cottage garden nearby. I'm looking forward to it ;) :D
