Bro I love you, you saved me from like 3+ hours of looking through threads on threads about this window. What worked for me was to clean the latches with a whole lot of WD40 and compressed air and it was basically brand new. Thank you so much brotha
FYI on the safety switch/latch on the back tailgate on these older runners. They are notorious for getting dirty and stop functioning. That's usually when the window stops working, etc. So, before going thru the hassle of bypassing that switch and maybe before it quits working where you have to go thru the process of getting the window down, spray a liberal amount of contact cleaner into the latch assembly. Work it in there by using a screwdriver or something similar to push or flip the latch closed and open a bunch of times. Moving the latch back and forth with cleaner will clean up the contacts in there. I do this when it starts acting up and not wanting to work until you have to shut the tailgate a few times. That's my Q to get the cleaner spray out.
This video helped put me on the right track but after struggling to get the back door light to stay off I found out you actually jump the white/black ground wire to the blue/red wire. Don’t touch the green wire. It will bypass just like this, without the back door light staying on! Also, put the scotch lock on the latch side of the wiring, that way if you ever decide to replace the latch the factory side of the harness is still untouched
Hey thanks for that info. I have an 86 that works perfect but I am painting it now and glad to see how the inside of gate looks with window up. I'm going to remove the tailgate light bar and so forth when I paint the tail gate. I'm in NC too, one owner on my 86 for 34 years, my neighbor.
Awesome brother, I went through most of this years ago and it’s not going down again so your very simple video has refreshed the places I need to find again to get it down and find the problem. If that wasn’t enough for anyone else out there they should not be trying to do anything on the truck. The guy that asked about a bad motor, I would try to find a new one (good luck) and replace it all from the inside unfortunately or go mcgyver and play the linkage game after the bad one is out. Still looking for a little more info on the actual relay just in case it can be repaired if that happens to be the problem but overall that was perfect for reminding me where everything is before I climb through to the inside and it’s impossible to find anyone who just gives a damn good info video anymore so hit me up cause you deserve a beer. 6 stars.
I believe I have that same rub mark on the glass on my 86 4Runner. I was wondering what that was from. So far the window always goes up and down - keep fingers crossed. The rub mark I believe has been there since we’ve had the vehicle in 1989.
My 1988 toyota 4runner currently has a problem with one of the sliders, the rolling button on the slider track was worn out so when the back door rolls up the rolling button ran off the slider track then one side of the window is not pushed up because the button was off the slider track, curtain l y need help to get this problem solved. Please respond me.
Great stuff! Question... Do you know if a 93 runner is roughly the same? Same issue, back hatch won't open or window roll down. I'm a widow & on my own & videos like this have helped me get through this stuff doing it myself. But i just want to see if it's pretty much the same for my Yoda. ALSO...! I seen another video where the guy had the back hatch OPEN & put the key in the door & turned it & it started beeping (just like when doors are open & key is in ignition) & he said that was telling you the door watch was open. He then used a screw driver to close the latches in each end of the back door, turned they key & no noise (because it thought the hatch was closed now). BUT... When i do this, door closed, i get the beeping noise. Do you have any idea why it is thinking my back hatch is open? Just bought it, sunroof has no power, same with passenger front window & this back hatch & window issue. I'm doing my best & going piece by piece so ANY INFORMATION is GR8TLY APPRECIATED :) THX
1st gens with removable tops also have a sensor under one of the bolts(3rd bolt from the back on DS) that mounts the top on... If the bolt is in, the sensor is blown & the window will not go up👍
Ok I have an 87. Window does the same thing it won’t go up the last 1/8th of an inch, no broken teeth. I am fine with where the window stop because it doesn’t leak or smell like exhaust but because of that small gap the rear wiper also won’t work. I’m trying to find a way to get the wiper to work regardless of where the glass is even if it’s all the way open. You have any idea where the top out switch is so I can get the wiper to work? Thanks and I know your video is like 8 years old lol 😂. Hopefully your still driving your 4Runner.
I'm about to tackle my rear window on a 2000. It goes up & down but stops sometimes & I have to wiggle it some or pull up some to get it to finish closing. I can't complain, these damn things run forever, am I right?
This is the exact video I’ve been looking for. I have warn out teeth like you had. I bought a new tailgate at a pick n pull and was gonna just replace the gear. Would that be harder than just welding new teeth? Also, do you happen to know if the the 2nd gen tailgate (94) has the same wire color for by passing the closing sensor? Thanks for this video.
For future referance, see if u have power to and from your switch,if yes,do the same on the relay on the drivers side relay,if no power then simply use a jumper as the relay is not needed
Hello - When I put a connector on the red/green and red/blue wires to bypass the open tailgate sensor, the "BACK DOOR" light came on on the dash. Did I do something wrong? Thanks for all your help!
Yea mine did the same. One day when I get around to it I'm gonna see if I can fix the latch switch by disassembling and cleaning it. I'm happy that my window works for now, but I hate looking at that BACK DOOR warning on the dash every day lol.

Toyota must have hired a bunch of total nerds to design this back door. I want to change the brake light bulbs but the window is stuck so I can get to 2 - 10mm bolts to get the lens off, smh.
Thank you! I learned more from 2 minutes of your video than watching 8 other waste of time from other dorks.

Appreciate all that advice - Love my 4Runner...Hate that tailgate

Thank you so much man insanely helpful you deserve the noble peace award
Get rid of the scotch lock connector ...junk
Will give you problems in the future...

Dude, replacing my rear tailgate on my '86, and this is just what I needed to know in order to remove the glass/motor stuff, thanks!
dont throw yourself under the bus you explained everything perfect so you are a pretty fair talker i have a 86 with the same problem

This is a great overview. Very easy to follow you.
To be clear, the 2 terminals for the motor are both POSITIVE not a pos and neg...the switch completes the ground circuit abd makes it go up or down
I can’t even get my window down with the battery trick lol. Must be my motor that’s broken

You rock man! Seriously, great info. Thank you for making this video 🤙

Awesome vid going to try some of these tips right now!!!👍👍👍
Getting on mine right now. Thx for the video and the information 🤘
If the motor is bad how do you get the window down.
Nice one mate . Bloody window on my 89 is driving me nuts lol.
OMG dude if I wasn't so cheap I'd pay you thank you so much !
This is great. Thank you for sharing. It helps us plenty.

Paul. Can you get the window down and/or the gate unlocked without engaging the electric motor ??
Where can I buy that bypass connector? I figured jump the 2 wires together and leave the yellow wire connected but that did not work
Junk

Correction... Re-setable relay on the bottom of the sensor! Lol
Estos videis son muy buenos solo que si estuviran en español seria mas facil aprender
Great vid real life saver. I wanted to know what's the name of the blue bypass clip you used on the door lock switch and where did u buy it? Thanks
Damian Barrios it's a standard connector you could find it Walmart in their electrical section
Can anyone tell me the part number for the back window regulator assembly? I am having a hell of a time finding it
Start with 69810 - your model year may be different. Use parts.toyota.com to look at diagrams.
I got one problem with my 1992 Toyota 4runner my back window won't roll down there's two wires the been disconnected
didnt work for me. window rolled down but bypassing it the key and switch still dont dp anything
For future referance, see if u have power to and from your switch,if yes,do the same on the relay on the drivers side relay,if no power then simply use a jumper as the relay is not needed
my lock switch is broken!
I have a issue with the window spring how do I install it when the regulator is already installed
Hello -
When I put a connector on the red/green and red/blue wires to bypass the open tailgate sensor, the "BACK DOOR" light came on on the dash. Did I do something wrong? Thanks for all your help!
The same thing happened on mine. No clue why
yup. that's just what happens when you bypass the switch.

It's a headache

I have six screws in my lens that remove the cover. All bulbs have easy access.
Click 4:35 if you want to lol
Why didn't you get a new switch?
