Thank you to everyone who watched this video! I understand that this is a pretty argumentative topic, so I wanted to address some points that I am seeing in the comments. 1. I am not saying that cartoons have to be funny to be good, and I never said that in the video. What I am saying is that a cartoon needs to excel at something if it is not a funny cartoon, and I feel as though a lot of modern cartoons lack a very strong identity or have less powerful storytelling due to trying too hard. Samurai Jack had amazing story-telling, visuals, and action. It's my favorite cartoon of all-time, along with Hey Arnold and SpongeBob, two of which are not known as funny shows. 2. I was a 2000s kid. Growing up during that time, I don't have a strong nostalgic connection to either the 90s or 2010s. This is just simply my opinion, no nostalgic bias included. 3. The argument that Courage and Steven Universe are similar isn't taking into consideration one thing: Courage only dealt with serious issues once in awhile, so whenever it did it felt much more genuine and memorable. 4. There is an argument that I am only looking at the bad cartoons of this decade and that the decade is bad because of those shows alone, but I specifically mentioned plenty of well-received ones in the video. The reason why people like myself enjoyed the 90s cartoons more is not just because of shows like Teen Titans Go and Breadwinners, but also because of shows that other people generally like. The comedy shows nowadays are either just unfunny or disgusting, and the other shows are way too focused on character development and character development alone. Less is more. Hope this helps :)
Hey mountain, I am an avid watcher of Japanese Animation. There are a few differences between anime and American Animation. In my opinion, American Animation needs to consider some of these points: -Not everything has to be driven by comedy Not everything has to be rendered in CGI -There is such thing as progressive-plot (episodes follow a continuous plot, meaning that episode order is to the utmost importance whilst watching) -Serious shows with originality are more memorable -OSTs are important (take in note: Made in Abyss's OST made by Kevin Penkin) -Do Not Follow The Left's Agenda!!!!! It Takes Away From The Shows -Adults watch cartoons as well, so think of them as audience as well -Killing off characters in an impact-full moment with a soundtrack accompanying it is memorable -If a character has a tragic backstory, visit it in detail -Do Not Include Censorship Unless It Adds To The Enjoyment Or Is Required By Law / Contract -Art is important ; Quantity vs Quality (Made in Abyss has amazing art) -Take risks during development -Adventure-based cartoons are not improbable -Make the plot / story complex and deep depending on audience and the show's appeal -Don't tie characters down -Diversify the characters' origins if the story is more complex (not the snowflake "sexist, racist" crap, I am talking about making the story less bland, and more memorable) -Make the characters have a level of wisdom -Dads are not always stupid -Mothers are not always a genius -Fantasy is more than setting -Princesses need to be able to rule a country alongside a mate, not look for love interests while being rebellious towards parents (I am looking at you, Disney) -Be innovative, don't just copy what has been successful in the past (this also includes not only animation, but also videogames [ahem, Call of Duty, battle royales, etc]) -During the first couple episodes, work a lot on world building, and exposition. You can start the story mid-action, and have indirect introduction (little or no narration), but do not skimp out on building the characters and the world in which they reside. If the story takes the "isekai" approach, focus the world building on the new world and how the mc got there, but do not also forget to introduce where the character used to reside, and emotional conflicts / personality / etc that developed there and why. -etc
I wouldn't say they're trying too hard, I'd say it's because shows nowadays wanna try something new. The stuff that you used to like in cartoons are no longer popular anymore, what I mean by that is that those things like comedy, episodic shows, and wacky characters have petered out from popularity, in other words they're obsolete. Companies nowadays wanna start something new with their animations. Shows like Steven Universe, and Star vs. The Forces of Evil are popular because they focus on telling interesting stories that are on going plots. That's basically the next best thing about cartoons nowadays. We're living in an age where people want more from their animations, they don't want the same old stuff that used to be good back in cartoons in the 90s and 2000s. For example, female characters in old cartoons used to appeared just for their looks so the male characters can make gogo eyes on her, like Minerva the Mink from the old Animaniacts show only existed just for her looks and nothing else. Female characters nowadays have evolved from that, now they're treated like real characters. And also due to restrictions over the years, your never gonna see a sexy character like Minerva anymore. What I'm trying to say is that cartoons are growing from being static and funny, to being more deep and thought out. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying cartoon can't be funny anymore, they can. But at the same they can more than that.
I see one more big problem: Weaker body language of the characters. In shows like Powerpuff Girls or Johnny Bravo characters had unique, expressive movement and poses, however they weren't overkill. Nowadays body languages are too weak or simple (which makes even excellent show more bland and forgettable) or too forced and goofy (Breadwinners) that is REALLY annoying.
@@starthefrakkfangirl6094 I noticed it to especially around the 2010s era the cartoons and anime overall just seems way to fuffy kiddie like and just weak in general
@@abrahampalmer8761 u call anime fluffy? there is this anime called re zero deconstructs that. beyond its lush animations, fantasy setting and cutesy cast its a psychological horror series. there is a one scene where character was eaten alive from inside out. u know it bad when the show use blood as censor
You know what else? Adding all that modern stuff to older properties from decades ago, new characters and stuff I can understand, but like Animaniacs and stuff? What about Seasame Street, Blues Clues and Arthur when they decided to add modern stuff to it? No. You know shows gone downhill like that that everyone loved years ago when they did that, when they should of ended years ago. Why? Why couldn’t they just leave that stuff alone and leave it classic like it’s always been without adding all that modern junk to it? It’s way too overdone. Not only that, but they continue to do that stuff of reboots of older shows too, like I mentioned kinda above, if you can’t make this stuff like the original source material why bother?
I don’t think being “non-episodic” is a problem, poor story writing is a problem. It can work out if done well. Samurai Jack for example did story writing well, Avatar the Last Airbender is the gold standard for good story writing. Steven Universe started off strong but ended horrible because of the plot twists which made the entire struggle throughout the story completely pointless.
And no, I don’t call this design “CalArts style” cuz most of these creators didn’t go to the academy of I dunno, animation. In conclusion, I’ll call this 2010’s animated design “Beanhead style”, although there are other characters whose appearance is different from the main style for the protagonist.
Cartoon Network has the worst lineup of shows, they cancel the good shows, make a movie once in a while, and Cartoon Network just Aired Teen Titans Go 300 times last week
teen titans go really need to go like it's literally Annoying Last year there was an Video about the Show being Cancelled in 2023 well it Already 2023 and Nothing happens so IT WAS AN WASTE OF TIME!!!
dude you are absolutely right cartoon nowadays are just not as fun or clever as they use to be, that why when I become an animator I'm not going to fall in to any of those cliche tropes that all modern cartoons have. nope it's going to be fun, clever, and well appeal to all audience both young and old.
@@cartoonfanatic I respect your opinion, I only like a few modern shows like regular show, gravity falls, wander over yonder, and early seasons of adventure time. Gumball was okay. But I've always been more distracted with watching my favorite classic shows like Ren and Stimpy, Batman the animated series, Rocko's modern life, CatDog, Johnny Bravo, Ed Edd n Eddy, Courage the cowardly dog, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, Angry Beavers, Aaahh real monsters, Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Samurai Jack, classic Spongebob, Batman Beyond, Danny Phantom, Fairly OddParents (old seasons), Jimmy Neutron, codename kids next door, grim adventures of Billy and Mandy, camp Lazlo, Foster's home for imaginary friends, teenage mutant ninja turtles (1987 and 2003), and etc.
It was a great show! This and Wander over Yonder were the one of the only 2010s cartoons I could got into it. But I had a hard time keeping up with other modern cartoons
I think one of the reasons why cartoons aren't as good as they used to be is because people aren't as interested in them anymore. Nowadays, people are more interested in trends, video games, sports and other things. Because of this, networks like CN and Nickelodeon don't care as much about what they do because they know that most of their audience is under 10 years old. It's honestly really sad, I love cartoons and there have been some really good cartoons recently like Gravity Falls, Gumball, Star Vs and We Bare Bears to name a few, but since not as many people care about cartoons anymore, there's really not much we can do about these problems. Let's just hope that cartoons will get better soon because I really don't want to see the animation industry die.
My family wants me to watch movies only but I hate it because it's not wacky, too much focus on realism, boring looks, and it's mostly AO(adults only) The reason movies have AO scenes because of sex,and I hate it, I'd rather make my character's relationships be unsexy so they can appeal to teenagers. I really love animation(cartoons, animation memes) and cartoonish stuff and I don't want them to die
Too much comedy, not enough story, horrible character design, memes and internet culture, and horrible modern trends and dialogue. And yea, music is just as important as the visuals in making a show worth watching. I agree with all your points.
I agree with a lot of the things said on this list. Mainly the reason you dislike Steven Universe. Though I have a reason to why Nick is being more sitcom focused. The Network was originally about Sitcoms, then the 90s kidz and cartoons and BOOM! So there's my very well written and elegant essay on why Nick isn't a number. 7/10 - IGN (Too Much Stupid)
90s - 2000s: very good, fair amount of comedy, actually a story 2010 - 2020: where's the funny? Edit: nevermind, not all 2010's cartoons are bad, i realized there are pretty good shows like Kick Buttowski, Max Steel, Lego Monkie Kid, Ninjago, Motorcity, Randy Cunningham, Generator Rex, Avengers EMH, Transformers Prime, Thundercats 2011, Ben 10 Omniverse, Glitch Techs, Sym Bionic Titan are awesome
Spongebob refused to try anything new after a certain point, and that's why it's the dullest thing on television after several decades, recycling plots. Also - you seem to have a very limited view on the medium
No offense, but I'm gonna have to disagree with some of your picks. * While I do miss shows with theme songs, I don't think they're all that necessary anymore. With networks trying to air more advertisements and commercials nowadays, modern shows sorta need to sacrifice their intros so that they can maintain their runtime. But it's not like they're totally extinct either; shows like "Adventure Time", "Steven Universe", "Gravity Falls", and "Rick and Morty" have good and memorable (albeit short) themes and they've resonated well with audiences. * I honestly had no problem with distinguishing the backgrounds of modern shows. "Adventure Time" has a vibrant yet soft and simple look (similar to Dr. Seuss' books), "Steven Universe" goes for a more tranquil, atmospheric approach reminiscent of an old arcade video game, and the look of "Gravity Falls" is really detailed and subdued. They're much easier to identify and recognize than most CGI products nowadays. * To be honest, while I agree that the modern art direction is a bit overused and could use a little more variety, it's a problem that has always existed in the media. I mean, in the 90's, there were tons of gross-out shows that were nothing but blatant clones of "Ren and Stimpy" (i.e. Cow and Chicken, Schnookums and Meat, Mega Babies, etc.). And for styles that blended together, the 80's and 90's also had that problem in spades. I mean, Cartoon Network had "Powerpuff Girls", "Dexters Lab", and "Johnny Bravo" - all of them were modeled after 60's cartoons (angular shapes, thick outlines, bright pastel colors, etc.) and looked practically indistinguishable from one another - and shows by Filmation (He-Man, Star Trek: TAS, Ghostbusters, etc.) all looked like Hanna Barbara rejects. It's not all that different from all the Scooby-Doo clones of the 70's or the black and white inkblot cartoons of the 20s and 30s - they all look alike as well. * You listed character development and ongoing stories as a problem that many modern cartoons suffer from. But in all honesty, I think the problem that many older cartoons have is their tendency to maintain the status quo. I mean, shows that continue to evolve and change make it all the more interesting to watch because you have no idea what direction that series will go, whereas a show that's so inbred that it resets its continuity after every episode for the sake of viewers can grow stale and uninspired. That's what happened to long-running shows like "Spongebob Squarepants" and "The Simpsons", which are now only pale imitations of what they used to be. Heck, modern shows like "Rick and Morty" mocked it and gave it an existential aspect. This is only my opinion, of course. You're free to follow your own ideas, but it is something to consider.
I agree with your last point about charecter development and stories. However maybe the point is how they are done with everything else the show is trying to do may not mix well.
herpicus derpicus While not a show, Incredibles 2 had a hilarious fight between Jack Jack and a raccoon, which was very homogenous to classic cartoon physical comedy like Tom and Jerry or something out of Looney Toons (and it was all without any dialogue from either of them since they don’t talk).
9:05 Nope. I stopped watching there. The problem is not serialization. The problem is the lack of REAL serialization and serialization being used as just a skin for episodic stuff. Avatar The Last Airbender. Justice League Unlimited and arguably the greater DCAU as a whole. OG Teen Titans. Even Young Justice. 4 of the greatest shows ever to grace televised animation (that were also primarily action shows, by the by) and one of the things in common they had were all the moving parts that actually did have awesome payoffs ans foreshadowing and exciting consequences that, fittingly enough, you could also jump in at at almost anytime and still have a great time.
+VunderGuy I agree. And you know what? I'm also adding shows like 'Code LYOKO' and 'Digimon Adventure' as well. Yeah they came from different countries but those are more great examples of real serialized shows done right and attracted a wide audience. People say the modern generation aren't into them like the older generation and to that I say maybe because for one thing the corporate networks are forcing it to be that way.
@@ringra1578 Made in Abyss, Overlord, Reincarnated as a Slime, Promised Neverland, Demon Slayer, Goblin Slayer, Is it Wrong in a Dungeon, and many thousands of others. On MAL, Full Metal Alchemist is ranked #1. Made in Abyss is ranked #26.
It not fucking about the non episodic show , most shows nowadays it look the same and it not creativity or originality. Steven univers look like star vs the force of evil in space
@Mighty Raccoon _“You're wrong, every modern character has their own distinguishable character model that can easily be spotted through a silhouette. Just because they have chubby cheeks & noodle arms doesn't mean shit. smh”_ This statement alone, says that you're of the younger generation in this day and age, not the Cartoon golden age from the past 10 years you know absolutely nothing about. The man behind this video proved his point, his videos is only suitable for the older audiences, not "chubby cheeks & noodle armed audiences" like you. It's also the bright vibrant colors and similarities between each cartoon that overcome those "distinguishable" character models of said cartoons no matter what type of silhouette they're superimposed on or to. So yes, it does mean something considering that they do* have similar art style that's almost compellingly the same (or identical towards one another) and what overcame that, is the *high overuse of vibrant colors* and *over written "comedy"* (something you guys like or get overly excited about). The matter is, is the overuse of chubby cheek & noodle limbed character design and lack of bulky built type characters (optional or sometimes used) can very well become problem at times, so the overuse of vibrant colors and extensive chubby cheek and noodle limbs type characters, coupled with less variety, the outcome is characters being way too cartoony only for them to be comedian shows no one doesn't need. People nowadays are supposed to be into brute force and action packed shows, not comedic cartoony cartoon characters that are used heavily for *profit* rather than quality. Cartoons today are about profit, not quality, people nowadays seems to don't care about cartoons at all in this day and age. Most of the time it focuses on the younger audiences (like you in particular) under 11 or maybe 10, not those of us who still cherish action packed cartoons still to this day. So judging by the statement you've made, clearly, you're of the younger audiences of the modern networks that are garbage. The network we used to know (such as I myself) were in its glory golden days, back when they actually put an awful lot of effort into their cartoons, which includes heartfelt moments and action cut scenes, not to mention variety in these cartoons as well. Without that, they'll be looked as same type of animation, different (but similar) cartoons, no matter how "distinguishable" they are, it'll all still stand out *despite* being "distinguish".
@Mighty Raccoon Okay Dr. Know-it-all, let's be heroes. _“Nothing of substance. Just Strawmans. Golden Age of Animation was decades ago . Starting in the 20s & onward due to the likes of Mickey Mouse, Super Man, Merrie Melodies, etc. I assume you're referring more towards "Golden Animation" as in: "Wen Kartewnz WERE Gewd 2 ME hurrr durrr"_ _. But the word usage is wrong in this case, do your homework since it seems to me you know nothing about cartoons.”_ Nice the classic _“I don't know nothing about the very thing I grew up with.”_ Here's the irony of that now that you've mentioned "homework", save me 3/4ths of a quarter of these paragraphs in grammar class. You could use little brushing up on your spacing and indents. _“Does you not know what a silhouette is? Colors vary from each show. Having color doesn't have to do anything_ _with the SHAPE of the character itself. Just admit that every show has clever character designs by having different shapes. Case closed. Even so, every show has their own set of colors. Teen Titans Go has cotton candy highlighted colors. Over the Garden Wall has murky green & orange colors. Gravity Falls has a lot of Summer greens & browns. You're being dismissive just because you can't debunk my point about silhouettes.”_ You're basically just getting *your* point across instead of at least tell me about those silhouettes, but rather instead gave me some good info about it and then claimed that I can "debunk" your knowledge covering that topic, which no one really said anything about how much you know/don't know. Me? Being dismissive with the info you've put out? That's ludicrous in an alt-right delusional standpoint. Why would I be dismissive when I can learn from it? It all depends on the person's interests. So you're claim is that: _“You can't debunk my Silhouettes intellect because you're not interested in it and I know more than you because of that fact”_ It doesn't matter how much you know, *it's how you say it that counts,* sheesh. And I wouldn't be _that_ gullible enough to celebrate how much I know over someone who don't know, before I know it, there will always be someone out there that knows it in detail far more than I do. I'm telling you this to be on the safe side, but who am I to judge. I can assume you know more about silhouettes than the entire world itself and it only shows from what I'm reading this far, almighty one (hence the name: *Mighty* Raccoon).
My response to your list #10 - While some shows to have unmemorable or lacking soundtracks there are many shows that do: Regular Show with many episodes containing classic songs from 70s, 80s, and 90s. SpongeBob in spite of its quality has always had it's Hawaiian soundtrack. Gumball, with its diverse content, has a wide vareity of song genre's and has many memorable songs #9 - Valid Point, most shows do linger around one solid character mold. But there are execptions, Gumball has probably one of the most diverse casts, full of not only different characters but in different art mediums as well. We Bare Bears, has bears(wow, really), a koala, and a Sasquatch, all of which take main or secondary roles. #8 - I see what your getting at with unmemorable backgrounds and settings being limited to regular towns but I still think there are many shows with memorable worlds. Steven Universe's backgrounds are beautiful and SU's world is intertwined with elements of both Earth and the Gems. Gravity Falls has a cozy feel. It looks like a real small town that you would find around mountainous regions. #7 - Valid Point, not much to add. Adventure Time wasn't the only thing that contributed in the "dude-bro" trend, as other shows like Regular Show also had that trend. #6 - Valid Point -This reason is probably the best out of all of them. I think the networks themselves are shooting themselves in the foot because they are to afraid to fail, when they have certified cash cows in SpongeBob and Teen Titans Go. Probably the biggest problem with modern cartoons #5 - I don't really think this is much of a problem. Nick stays mostly to just episodic comedies. Disney has both Gravity Falls and Star Vs. both of which were massive sucesses and both had story arcs. You make it seem at multiple points that having an arc is a bad thing when that is not the case. I started watching Steven Universe, because of the fight scene in Jail Break, even though there were four episodes building up to it. #4 - Semi-Valid Point - A lot of the really bad cartoons have the issue of the extreme demographic targeting. But when it comes to the successful shows you see that in most cases they are liked by kids and adults alike. Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Regular Show, and Adventure Time all have dedicated adult fan bases along with their kid fanbases #3 - Valid Point - Probably the second point I fully agree with. A big turnoff for many people were the relationship bullcrap that plagued Regular Show and Adventure Time. Even I had to step back from both shows and returned at a later time. It's alright to jump ship with your shows plot point but you can't keep switching sides. Mordecai and Finn should have had there characters mature after they lose both of their crush's but their rebounding just felt...ugh #2 - Semi-Valid Point - I say it's semi-valid because this problem is dying. CN has it's malignant reboot tumors but other then that all shows that are really lacking in the humor department are either all ready dead or slowly dying. #1 - Character Development is not a bad thing. What you are missing is that lots of 90s Cartoons were episodic comedies. In the 2010s, more shows with plot-driven themes became one of the ways to suceed in animation. You can't have a show with a story and have the character not change at all. A great cartoon character has flaws and the character must develop to show there progression as a character. If you desire a truly stagnant character, personality wise, then you probably want a show like SpongeBob, That works thrives in the comedic, not in the narrative. Finally your point on Steven Universe. You are perfectly free to have your own opinion just as I'm free to have mine. Steven Universe's art is frankly breathtaking and Steven is maturing from his former childish self. However, your points on SU's politicism is true. I left the fandom and only really watched for fun around Season 3-4 just because I din't want to be associated with the darker sides of the fandom and I am now only just coming back to it. Feel free to respond if your read this
I am extremely disappointed in society because all they do is critize what i like because of its flaws. Character development is most important thing to keep a cartoon alive
This is a very fundamental take on the 2010s generation of cartoons that many people don't recognize when trying to analyzing the quality of todays cartoons. Beside a cartoon needing to be funny, every other point that you mentioned is valid and I agree with. I'm also glade that you didn't go with the common narrative of judging the quality of show by general reviews sites and popularity which is screwed. As you said not every cartoons today are necessary bad but the story elements and standards for how some cartoons in modern times are made to be is the problem. I'll say cartoons are moving towards being formula and simpler because they don't have to work as hard and is easy to produce compare to making a creative and telling cartoons. Not to mention that cartoons are also being more politize than centralize in element now which affects the story. But this was a very great video and I learn a few things.
I’m glad I’m not alone on this. This video perfectly sums up why I don’t watch nowadays cartoons I definitely agree. If I have kids I’m gonna raise them on the cartoons from my childhood (90s-2000s) instead of any modern cartoon bc in my opinion many modern shows suck. Edit: Not all modern cartoons are bad, I just like a few of them, like regular show, gravity falls, wander over yonder, action cartoons from early 2010s, and adventure time (old seasons).
i dont agree with the cartoons have to be funny thing just because a cartoon is serious dosent automaticly make it bad now if its ment to be a comedy and it isnt funny then fine i agree but not all shows are ment to be lauth a minute hell by that mentality 9/10 of anime sucks because alot of anime focus more on the plot than on the comedy(with some exceptions like slice of life animes
I hate Anime because it's too realistic and lip syncing is horrible (all i get is pepekeke) I like Gacha because it's non-budget and extremely creative, and i like the style too
Networks ditched opening & closing theme songs because they wanted more commercials. These days it really feels like TV shows are just filler between ads. Episodic needs balance. Basically, it's best to bread a series with multi-episode stories at the beginning & end of a season & then keep the center filler. Definitely disagree with notion that most cartoons have tight target audiences. You're just thinking of age spectrum, but in reality the problem is that cartoons are too focused on lowest common denominator mass appeal & completely lack what it takes to appeal to niche audiences, like having different genres. People can shit on 80s cartoons for being overly sanitized toy commercials, but at least they had actual genres.
What killed Adventure Time for me was adding waaaay too many characters & shoving all of the ones we'd grown to love in the background as mere cameos. I also hated Marceline's singing.
Kids today have it so easy with TV stations dedicated to cartoons 24-7. When I was a kid, Nickelodeon was off the air 12 hours a day, pure static. But then Nick At Nite came. Cartoon Network could only be watched on a small box on the TV Guide Channel because most networks didn't carry it.
another problem with modern cartoons is that they are usually targeted by political groups. meaning that if a cartoon is too politically sensitive, it's gonna get a lot hits from special interests groups. for example, if a cartoon is about anthropomorphic animals running a fight club with a lot of violence, then it's gonna be the target of PETA. if a cartoon is about a offensive middle eastern person then that's gonna be threatened by multiple Islamic terrorist groups. and if there's a cartoon about a former soldier with a huge collection of weapons and firearms then it's gonna get assaulted by both parents, the part of the government responsible for weapon regulations, and even survivors of mass shootings such as Columbine. in short cartoons can't be too much of what the creators want because it'll get on the wrong side of political correctness.
I'm very miserable and sorry for the kids of next generation that they will not get such informative and matured(I mean not such childish) content on tv. They are bringing stupid show on tv and removing good ones, not even anime is left. I'm glad that I wasn't one of them. This old MCU universe was a great experience for my childhood, ☮️.
Even modern spongebob to its credit isn't trying to have a story arc season 9b is at least getting better hopefully next decade learn from this ren and stimpy and rockos modern life are great shows that are fun and occasionally heartwarming
I will say that for the last 2 Seasons or so of Steven Universe I definitely agree with your criticisms but what even got me liking it initially was I didn't even realize the political views they were pushing initially. I don't have a problem with it per se but the first few seasons I felt it was much more story-based trying to push their agenda
I wonder what you think of the most recent Spongebob seasons. Because that Season 6 clip you included is not a common thing anymore. Such jokes were not even really a standard for Spongebob 10 years ago. It is a standard on Family Guy, though.
It's gotten to the point where (with the exception of The Venture Bros.) all the Western cartoon shows I've liked have either ended (eg Gravity Falls, Samurai Jack, Futurama) or overstayed their welcome (unfortunately, not even South Park is exempt). Sometimes both (eg Regular Show). Can't be bothered with a lot of today's shows for a lot of the reasons brought up here.
Personally, I don't think SOME SHOWS having overarching stories and/or being non episodic is a bad thing by itself, it's all about execution. As well as how the show is promoting itself. The BIGGEST problem I will agree with when it comes to these type of shows tho IS the fact that unless you like binging shows, these kind of shows DO make it hard to attract new fans as the show is still airing on TV with new episodes tied into these overarching stories. ESPECIALLY if the show is about to end with a BIG finale...
Watch any 90s or 2000s cartoons and sitcoms and you will see a big difference Likeable characters Great animations and sitcoms A good concept A great story plots While 2010's have Babish cartoon designs, cringey sitcoms Annoying and unlikeable characters Boring story plots and concepts Childish humor It's even so hard to tell whether a cartoon's a preschool or a kids show that's how babyish there are
@@m56214 you welcome we as millennials have the best of the both worlds when it comes to what cartoons we watch growing up for example hey Arnold Rugrats dbz pokemon Yu-Gi-Oh Digimon SpongeBob SquarePants Ed edd and Eddy courage of the cowardly dog fairy odd parents etc..... Last wave of greatness then late 00 till now cartoons for the most part became dull try hard and just tedious to watch on a daily basis.
That's why I don't really take interest in "modern" cartoons today because it's like almost all of them are made to look stupid. Some only really good shows I enjoyed were Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Star vs the Forces of Evil.
When I first saw pictures of Samurai Jack there, I thought you were gonna complain about the new season a lot. I was relieved to find that there was only one complaint about it- no theme song.
Me too, That;'s why I HATED the final episode. Seriously, 13 years for THAT?! It made no frigging sense, it was totally rushed, it was a copy of Gureen Lagaan, and once, just ONCE, couldn't Jack have had a HAPPY ending?! A real, truly, completely happy ending?! God knows the guy deserves it! Call me conventional, call me a sap, call me ungrateful, but couldn't we have had a happy ending to this?!
You know what I would like to see a video on the worst things about 90's shows! Seriously why do people always pick on 2010's shows I think this video idea is way too overrated.
Because 2010's cartoon shows have more problems, then shows from the 90's and mid 2000's. 90's cartoons have their fair share of problems, but they are very minor, because the creators from that time put effort and creativity for their animated shows and the creators themselves try to do better and learn from their past mistakes, unlike shows in 2010's, where allot of shows are less creative and memorable. Does anyone even remeber Wander Over Yonder? A show created by Creg McCracken and aired on Disney?
Asylum117 so you are telling me that the 2010's shows don't have effort! Also that doesn't mean that the topic isn't overrated I seriously it gets boring after a while!
I never said that 2010's shows don't have effort. I am saying that allot of 2010's animated shows seriously don't have effort put into them, there are some minor shows that have a pass for that time. Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Season 5 of Samurai Jack, DuckTales 2017 reboot, Wander Over Yonder, Gravity Falls, The Loud House, Harvey Beaks and that's pretty much it. But Regular Show ended in a rush, Adventure Time is also coming to it's end and same goes for The Amazing World of Gumball. Gravity Falls also has ended and Wander Over Yonder was ciminally canceled by Disney. Who needs good shows with effort. if there is more room for shows like Teen Titans GO, PowerPuff Girls 2016, Pickle and Peanut, Breadwinners, etc.? -_-
@Asylum117, I'm sorry, but *plenty* modern cartoons have effort put in them. If you only look at the crap, than that is all you will get. It's clear you only look at the crap when you post a similar response on every damn video. Also, Breadwinners was cancelled all the way back in 2014. Take it off you list...
secretagentman in term of creativity nope 👎 and that how modern cartoons suck . SU IS JUST STAR VS THE FORCE OF EVIL MIXT WITH ADVENTURE TIME. You know it . Heck even anime start to being shit too. Non épisodiques show are great too , but plot driven show are not so munch far better in you don’t want to watch the 1st episode to the end . Heck if you cancel team titans go on CN . You just might make the channel worst. TTG SELL FOR CHILDREN 👶 AND IF SU CAN DO THAT IN ONE WEEK, IT WOULD FALL THE CHART . Only people like you would enjoy, but not all people would love . See the chart of NICKELODEON, etc. It just not so great when SU DO AN MARATHON ON CN WITH IT PLOT .
Watch Made in Abyss. The soundtrack was great and was implemented into the show well. Watch the subbed version, because the dub takes away from the greatness of the original.
With a lot of complex cartoons, it's only nonepisodic at certain times. They also often still have foreshadowing, flashbacks, or callbacks to help give context to the audience.
You speak like you lived through it, what are you? Like 15-16? Now I realise all those old cartoons are available but come on! There's still good cartoons being made, admittedly not as many ........ Its not like we knew at the time how good we had it, we felt how you feel now. We thought that there was nowhere to go but up.
Jeez, this got me quaking. I wanna develop a cartoon in the future but i’m afraid my cartoon has a bunch of these problems. I wanna keep the idea and characters since I’ve developed it since I was 7, but I don’t know if I should restart from scratch because it’s quite edgy
Really hit the nail on the head. I feel that these are issues with cartoons people are afraid to talk about because they want to act like we're living in this picture perfect golden age of cartoons. You know, the very same thing they complain about 90s and 2000s fans! In my opinion, this decade was only good in first half, then crashed and burned by the second half. This applies to both movies and shows by the way. Now, I do believe that modern cartoons have some merit, considering how popular and acclaimed they are with fans and the general public. But, there was just something about them that kept me away, and I think this video explained the reasons why. I will have admit that the only shows I enjoyed from the 2010s were of all things, My Little Pony FiM, and Green and Ham, the former of which I didn't even like at first. I'm not saying that people who enjoy these cartoons have bad taste, since it's mostly a me thing that I can't into the cartoons of today. But I feel that the only way we can fix the problem of modern cartoons is to bring our own ideas to the table, and I plan to make my original ideas a reality someday, hopefully without these problems listed in the video.
I know the best example on cartoon that's both episodic, but also has interconnected plot: Jackie Chan Adventures. Most episodes are mostly "Monster of the Week" stuff, with said "Monster" corresponding to the season's plot, while plot itself is... "Collect 12 talismans" or "Stop 8 demons" or "find 9 Oni Masks". And this is the kind of "Main story" i want to see in cartoons. To keep episodic structure of each episode being a fun self-contained story on it's own, but also continuing the story with "We found another talisman!", then concluding the season with epic multi-parter agaisnt the main antagonist. Kinda like in Sailor Moon.
As someone who doesn't watch modern cartoons and gets their information thur osmosis i legit thought Gravity Falls and Stephen Universe where the same cartoon for like 5 years.
Yea, they use too many vibrant colors, I don't get why even certain audiences aren't bothered by it. But yet again they might be people who love stuff that are pretty and don't care about quality or even good morals.
In "Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated," some episodes are non episodic, but a lot pf episodes have recaps at the beginning to help the audience catch up. Some shows become more episodic near the end to tie up loose ends. It is important to help the audience keep up when making a nonepisodic cartoon.
Episodic shows are shit most of the time unless they're full on comedies though. You seem to have this idea that all cartoons are meant to be silly when in reality lots of people just don't like those types I'm one of those people personally I'm not really into many comedies except for like classic spongebob, space ghost, south park and invader zim, my modern favorite cartoons (gravity falls, voltron, over the garden wall and castlevania) are all plot heavy shows for example and that's not a bad thing. I also don't get your comment about non episodic shows having less fans since Steven universe is serialized and it's fucking huge. I think you're just basing this off the type of shows you like (ren and stimpy and dexters lab stuff) and not realizing there's other ways to have a good cartoon and not all cartoons have to be comedies that's the main problem with CN and nick they're just 90% comedies right now. Also Hey arnold is a slice of life and samurai jack is an action cartoon so by your logic they're technically bad. I also don't think you realized that courage had episodes dealing with things like lesbianism and abusive relationships similar to SU so why is it bad when one show does it but not the other? I'm guessing you where to young to understand what the topic of the episode was? It just sounds like you where 3 years old shitting your pants while eating animal crackers while watching these 'good 90s shows'. The actual main problem with nick and CN is that there's too many comedies and not enough diversity in programming to make everyone happy. But hey according to this video the status quo is god and it's the most important thing on planet earth.
From your entire comment it looks like you only skimmed the video. He clearly states he likes shows that aren't just comedies. He goes into large detail about how many modern story driven shows have consistent problems such as forced plots/character development. Another thing, your comment is full of broken grammar. One thing that really stands out is when you call him as a "3 year old shitting his own pants" 90s nostalgia fanboy. It's like you actively just disagree with him just because he used 90s shows as positive examples.
As a 90's kid here, I don't watch tv that much anymore but still get a peak at some shows due to some clips from RUclips and maybe sneak in an episode. I do agree with your list and understand and respect your reasons on Steven Universe. But I do have a question though: what if, and I do mean "*IF*", shows like Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, and Star vs Forces of Evil (in other words cartoon with heavy plots and serious tones at times) wern't really kids shows? Like they wern't specifically aired on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, or Disney or any other kid network anymore? Cartoons that had the freedom and go on a more serious path (like what it's doing now) not rated PG? Not really looking for an answer, just your or anyone elses opinion. Like if all the kid friendly networks were to fall or shut down but the creators, animators, everyone still are able to continue the story on another network but are now unleashed by their previous network's shackles, would it still be a "kid's cartoon show?" How would you like to see those shows now? Remain the same (obviously not bit there are some folks) or let the creator have *fun* with it? Comment section, if please.....
Now, there are exceptions, of course (Sonic Boom, The Loud House and its spin-off, The Casagrandes, DuckTales (2017), Muppet Babies (2018), and Netflix's Green Eggs and Ham (2019)), but I despise a lot of modern cartoons nowadays. Admittedly, some of them are cartoons that other people like that I don't, and here are some reasons why: ** The animation style, especially if cartoons use the CalArts animation style. So many characters look so similar, I feel like they're all created by the same company even when it's obvious they air on different networks. ** Cringe-worthy voice acting. I've seen trailers for otherwise well-received cartoons that have actually turned me away because of how the voices of certain characters gave me migraines. ** Relying too much on pointless toilet humor. Even toilet humor can be done right if used properly (a character is forced to deal with it), but so many cartoons tend to go the wrong way (it just being there) ** Negative character stereotypes I've seen so many times before in media, especially ones that depict males as idiots, jerks, or idiotic jerks, and females as superior in intelligence (if not very naggy). I certainly hope the 2020s will be a better era for cartoons. I'm still trying to get an animated series of my own off the ground by 2029.
How can you say that the 2010 was a bad era for cartoons, when we've goten stuff like, Kipo and the Age of the Wildabeasts Over the Garden Wall Gravity Falls Adventure Time Dragon Prince Hilda Infinity Train Ducktales 2017 Tangled the Series Glitch Techs Owl House Amphiia Big Hero Six the Series Clone Wars (season 7) Craig and the Creek Castlavania the series (not a kids show, but still quality Western animation) Mao Mao on Cartoonnetwork Carmen Sandiego OK Ko Harvey Beaks and all the shows you mentioned?
@@crfstewarje I did mention DuckTales 2017. Also, I despise Gravity Falls because of how un-Disney-like it is; it's dark, violent, depressing, and inappropriate for young children, in huge contrast to Disney's long line of family-friendly movies and TV shows. I don't like anything about it; the premise, the setting, or any of the characters (Mabel is my least favorite Disney character of all time, and Dipper and Grunkle Stan are barely any better). Also, the show's licensed game, "Legend of the Gnome Gemulets" is a glaring example of a bad licensed game in Disney's long line of normally well-made ones.
I’m not sure why the algorithm has this video just now showing up in my feed. Regardless. Here’s what I think about Steven Universe. On the whole, it is a show made for a very specific audience in a similar way that Powerpuff Girls was before it. Powerpuff Girls, however, stayed away from being too girlish, and I think this helped it greatly in appealing outside of the intended demographic. But reproducing the same thing with an LGBTQ show is more difficult. Take for example a character like Johnny Bravo. He works perfectly fine in his own universe. He might even work in Adventure Time, or Regular Show. But if we plopped him into Steven Universe, whose characters and audience don’t have traditional storytelling roles for how gender and relationships are supposed to operate, and he would be extremely problematic. That conversation is hardwired into Steven Universe from the get-go, and it’s the single biggest source of appeal the show has had IMO. It’s an unavoidable part of being a person, but navigating gender and relationships are more problematic in the LGBTQ world for a variety of reasons both obvious and subtle. Character development is the logical consequence in having those conversations. Switching around - I love Johnny Bravo. And almost every cartoon from CN’s golden era. But fun as it was to have a character like HIM around, his transgender presentation was merely (but adorably) for shock, and added nothing in and of itself to the show. Stevonnie on the other hand actually addresses being a transgender person. I do miss the golden era’s brand of light-hearted or operatic (and no in-between!) comedy, though.
The only cartoons i can think of that were good when this came out were rick and morty, regular show my little pony (2010 only) tmnt 2012 and mlp fim was definately the best of those 4 but now thats over so rick and morty is one of the only good ones left but at least it will be on for a long time before it ends
... either your standards for cartoons are weird or you need to watch more tv, star vs the forces of evil, gravity falls, ducktales woonoo, my little pony friendship is magic, milo murphy, guardians of the galaxy, and 7D along with many other modern cartoons disprove your statements
One of the reasons why I love Fanboy&ChumChum is the art style, I love how unique it is!! Especially Eric's own art he does on paper :) he's a talented artist and I cannot wait for another show of his :)
People always said that Fanboy and Chum Chum are bad because of the gross-out quality and annoying characters. I have to say that I used to hate the show when I entered the bandwagon where cartoon community always nitpicking on cartoons. Now, after that, I realized that everyone has opinions on their own. Even Fanboy and Chum Chum is that bad, I actually like the quirkiness of the show, and heck, even the show becomes a meme material now.
Yeah modern cartoons are bad, like I honestly love classic cartoons way more than modern cartoons! like classic cartoons and anime have way better art styles Than modern cartoons!
You forgot a BIG problem with modern cartoon nowadays, the one problem I did have with the new season of Samurai Jack...CRAPPY SERIES FINALES!!! Honestly, we waited 13 years...and that finale STUNK!! Episodes 1-8 were so amazing, I loved every minute. But then ep 9 started to go downhill in the last 5 minutes, and the last ep...the finale...the one we've waited and waited for...what the HELL happened?! And I know that's not the only one. Ya should have put that on your list. Bad series finales.
I didn't watch every cartoon growing up, whether from my generation or prior to that. But when there have been less than stellar or impressive cartoons lately, even though some cartoons from the past I'm glad I didn't see growing up after reading others' comments on them, others I wish I did. But fortunately, thanks to video sites like this one which compensate for that, I've been checking out several great ones I'd never seen before from the past that are worth watching and better. The reason certain ones I wish I could've checked out sooner but didn't is because either I was unaware of them or if I did know of any I previously hadn't seen, I simply chose to sleep on them. So I still have plenty more from which to select as alternatives. I got into a few from this decade that became my favorites as well, but none of them are the bigger ones. Every time the animation industry comes out of a slump one minute, here we go again falling back into it the next somehow. I hope it doesn't continue to spiral out of control too much like it has, as too many subpar shows are exactly why it's hard to convince some that not all cartoons fall into this stereotype of being too kiddie or mindless for most adults for various reasons, that it hasn't gotten too much of that stigma or bad reputation, and it's too limited or even stagnant. Although they may come from different decades or eras, I found that there's always some animated series from just about every decade that will grab me and I'll enjoy.
Can point out that a ting that has been relevant since the begining of cartoon production. We only tend to remember the good programs that arose from such an er. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a good example that was part of big toy based cartoons in the 80´s and one of the bigest, earning the big money. Naturally, other/same producers want the same success, then clone shows starts popping up as GoBots, Street Sharks, Stone Protectors or Inhumanoids (ther is moor exampels). Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man and She-Ra are still remembered and get new fans today. While the clon series are forgotten and only remembered by old farts (me) who grew when they were a little relevant. All generations have these programs. Then when these clones (or if they milked a series for too long) do not succeed, the companies want to start again from scratch, why many series are usually canceled. Also want to point out some constructive criticism: Had been easier to understand what you were talking about if I had some more clear examples of what you meant when you went through a number. I mean that you use more examples from a cartoons you think are good examples of these problems. If I interpret correctly, the ones in the background is such a program? Or? For anyone who has not seen these programs or watched Cartoon Network or Nickelodian in a long time your criticism will be a little difficult to follow. Hope this criticism will help. P.S Sorry for any grammar mistake not my first language.
When I compare the cartoons of then to now and when they shine, they are clearly some of the greatest stuff we have ever gotten. Clearly people call something good because of their nostalgia and we like to compare our childhoods to what we don't like today thinking this is the worst time to be alive. Heres just a few examples of greatt cartoons from the past few years Adventure Time Steven Universe Gravity Falls Star Vs The Forces Of Evil DuckTales reboot The Amazzing World of Gumball Rick And Morty BoJack Frekin Horseman! Now lets look at 2000's cartoons from back then people consider great. Spongebob (seasons 1-3) Fairly Odd Parents Rugrrats The Powerpuff Girls Avatar Courage The Cowardly Dog Ed Edd n Eddy (the only one that could be huge in scale, drama, comedy, etc. seems to be Avatar). Don't even get me started on the 80's and 90's. Almost literally every cartoon back then was based on a toy brand or popular movie. Can you seriously look at shows back then and say they were not cheap cash grabs?
My image of ideal show is Totally Spes. Fun episodic stories that feel like parody of spy movies, but also very quirky and funny. ...Even though many people say it's a "Fetish cartoon", it lacks my personal fetishes, so no, i like the cartoon not because of fetishes. But because of fun "Villain of the Week" formula. Other ones that are close are Sailor Moon, Jackie Chan Adventures.
No. 11) over reliance of meta humor. When used sparingly it's fine, but when a character just stops the show every second to address the obvious it just ruins the immersion.
You also forgot to mention the single biggest problem with modern cartoons: they're ALL a bunch of stupid, obnoxious sitcoms primarily. ALL OF THEM. There's not a single major, played straight, primarily action cartoon amongst them all in the vein of Avatar: The Lastairbender, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, OG Teen Titans, and Young Justice. And don't you go mentioning Disney's Marvel cartoons, because I meant GOOD ones here and was talking about Nick and Cartoon Network here.
I know this video is old but I feel the spongebob example should've used a episode from Season 9 or 10 back when this video came out. Since the example in the video is a bit old and came from the late 2000s. That's my only major critique.
I remember watching an episode of Steven Universe sometime ago. The scene in question had Steven get informed/lectured by a doctor about the effects of PTSD and how he has become desensitized to the traumatic experience since he's been exposed to it so often. Now contrast that with a show like Mighty Max(a cheesy 90's show) where the topic almost never comes up. I never understood why something that deep needs to be put into a cartoon. Not that I'm really against it, but how does an 8 year old comprehend something like that? This is my problem with modern cartoons. They try to "deconstruct" existing tropes or subvert them altogether. I'm largely in agreement with your commentary. I miss when it was just good guys vs bad guys, episodes that a moral lesson theme about lying, cheating, and other delinquent activities that snowballed into bigger problems. Yeah it sounds juvenile and it probably is, but those shows even in my age are still more fun to watch than poor quality shows like Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Gumball, and others.
Hope this helps :)
okay
I love Gumball but they air it way too much.
Some people say that Recess and Ed, Edd n' Eddy are Hey Arnold Lite. What are your thoughts on this?
Hey mountain, I am an avid watcher of Japanese Animation. There are a few differences between anime and American Animation. In my opinion, American Animation needs to consider some of these points:
-Not everything has to be driven by comedy
Not everything has to be rendered in CGI
-There is such thing as progressive-plot (episodes follow a continuous plot, meaning that episode order is to the utmost importance whilst watching)
-Serious shows with originality are more memorable
-OSTs are important (take in note: Made in Abyss's OST made by Kevin Penkin)
-Do Not Follow The Left's Agenda!!!!! It Takes Away From The Shows
-Adults watch cartoons as well, so think of them as audience as well
-Killing off characters in an impact-full moment with a soundtrack accompanying it is memorable
-If a character has a tragic backstory, visit it in detail
-Do Not Include Censorship Unless It Adds To The Enjoyment Or Is Required By Law / Contract
-Art is important ; Quantity vs Quality (Made in Abyss has amazing art)
-Take risks during development
-Adventure-based cartoons are not improbable
-Make the plot / story complex and deep depending on audience and the show's appeal
-Don't tie characters down
-Diversify the characters' origins if the story is more complex (not the snowflake "sexist, racist" crap, I am talking about making the story less bland, and more memorable)
-Make the characters have a level of wisdom
-Dads are not always stupid
-Mothers are not always a genius
-Fantasy is more than setting
-Princesses need to be able to rule a country alongside a mate, not look for love interests while being rebellious towards parents (I am looking at you, Disney)
-Be innovative, don't just copy what has been successful in the past (this also includes not only animation, but also videogames [ahem, Call of Duty, battle royales, etc])
-During the first couple episodes, work a lot on world building, and exposition.
I see one more big problem:
Weaker body language of the characters.
I don't like that too, not just with animal characters but with humans as well. I hate this safe artstyle and simplistic animation in shows nowadays.
@@starthefrakkfangirl6094What about Johnny Test? He have an Talking Dog Plus He Always Almost die in Every EP Same with Jake from American Dragons.
You forgot obsessing over popular culture because back then, cartoons used to be simple and not obsessing over iPhones.
Defiantly agree. I'm 16 but I'm sick and tired of that element in cartoons.
Yeah I agree!
Totally agree with reason #9! I'm sick and tired of the 2010s art style!!
The same cutesy wootsy noodle arms and B-shapead heads is so annoying.
Yeah, let's try to convince them to go with a more eastern animation art style!
Does anyone realize that a lot of 2000's cartoons were either geometric or anime?
Every era has a popular animation trend.
And no, I don’t call this design “CalArts style” cuz most of these creators didn’t go to the academy of I dunno, animation. In conclusion, I’ll call this 2010’s animated design “Beanhead style”, although there are other characters whose appearance is different from the main style for the protagonist.
Cartoon Network has the worst lineup of shows, they cancel the good shows, make a movie once in a while, and Cartoon Network just Aired Teen Titans Go 300 times last week
at least the situation is better nowadays, but still.
42.8 hours' worth of TTG? bruh
teen titans go really need to go like it's literally Annoying Last year there was an Video about the Show being Cancelled in 2023 well it Already 2023 and Nothing happens so IT WAS AN WASTE OF TIME!!!
it the 2000s, it was great to be born as a kid who loves cartoons, but now same shit is the new kid on the block
Except being born in 2000 or 2001, they would barely remember the first half of the decade.
dude you are absolutely right cartoon nowadays are just not as fun or clever as they use to be, that why when I become an animator I'm not going to fall in to any of those cliche tropes that all modern cartoons have. nope it's going to be fun, clever, and well appeal to all audience both young and old.
I agree completely
Same here. For those who wish to have a genuine good cartoon, don't throw away your hope, it will come one day, not overnight, but some day.
There have been a lot of good modern shows in the past 5-10 years. You just haven't seen a lot of them.
Have you seen the Amazing World of Gumball? Imo it's probably the funniest modern cartoon as of now
Yep! Not really applying it to this list.
It was a great show! This and Wander over Yonder were the one of the only 2010s cartoons I could got into it. But I had a hard time keeping up with other modern cartoons
I love that show
It's too cringy for me, personally
That show sucke
Yea. I'm trying to get into this industry myself and to see it die...gosh...
I watch your channel
lol I never see anyone talk about sports
My family wants me to watch movies only but I hate it because it's not wacky, too much focus on realism, boring looks, and it's mostly AO(adults only)
The reason movies have AO scenes because of sex,and I hate it, I'd rather make my character's relationships be unsexy so they can appeal to teenagers.
I really love animation(cartoons, animation memes) and cartoonish stuff and I don't want them to die
@@gavintheshiba8304 There's always people talking about sports where have you been
Too much comedy, not enough story, horrible character design, memes and internet culture, and horrible modern trends and dialogue. And yea, music is just as important as the visuals in making a show worth watching. I agree with all your points.
Horrible Character Design?
@powerstar 2028 Damn that kinda is true tho especially the character design part but I hope do it right
True I miss the good old days when cartoons used to be simple and not obsess over these clichéd stuff

Even 00's cartoons were awesome. 2010's was de decade of hell.
Agree my favorite cartoon are from the late 90s/early 00s my favorite of all time is Digimon
90s - 2000s: very good, fair amount of comedy, actually a story
2010 - 2020: where's the funny?

Interesting read and interesting points.
Thanks for watching!
You explained way better than I ever could.

Yeah, it was forced and kind of lazy, yet looney tunes show is soooo bad because it doesn't really on it🙄 the original didn't even rely on it
Same. It’s probably due to modern parents being too dumb to understand the comedy behind slapstick.

Nope.

_“You're wrong, every modern character has their own distinguishable character model that can easily be spotted through a silhouette. Just because they have chubby cheeks & noodle arms doesn't mean shit. smh”_
This statement alone, says that you're of the younger generation in this day and age, not the Cartoon golden age from the past 10 years you know absolutely nothing about.

My response to your list
#10 - While some shows to have unmemorable or lacking soundtracks there are many shows that do: Regular Show with many episodes containing classic songs from 70s, 80s, and 90s. SpongeBob in spite of its quality has always had it's Hawaiian soundtrack. Gumball, with its diverse content, has a wide vareity of song genre's and has many memorable songs
#9 - Valid Point, most shows do linger around one solid character mold.
Probably the biggest problem with modern cartoons
#5 - I don't really think this is much of a problem.
Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Regular Show, and Adventure Time all have dedicated adult fan bases along with their kid fanbases
#3 - Valid Point - Probably the second point I fully agree with. A big turnoff for many people were the relationship bullcrap that plagued Regular Show and Adventure Time. Even I had to step back from both shows and returned at a later time. It's alright to jump ship with your shows plot point but you can't keep switching sides. Mordecai and Finn should have had there characters mature after they lose both of their crush's but their rebounding just felt...ugh
#2 - Semi-Valid Point - I say it's semi-valid because this problem is dying.

Even though I mostly watch live action shows now, I can definitely see your points.
"Episodic"
Dang, I learned a new word.
Edit: Not all modern cartoons are bad, I just like a few of them, like regular show, gravity falls, wander over yonder, action cartoons from early 2010s, and adventure time (old seasons).
i dont agree with the cartoons have to be funny thing
just because a cartoon is serious dosent automaticly make it bad
now if its ment to be a comedy and it isnt funny then fine i agree but not all shows are ment to be lauth a minute

That is very true

I love Ren and Stimpy and Rocko’s modern life too
I will say that for the last 2 Seasons or so of Steven Universe I definitely agree with your criticisms but what even got me liking it initially was I didn't even realize the political views they were pushing initially.
What do you think of adult animation like Bojack Horseman, Castlevania, Archer etc.?
Is it interesting that a lot off modern cartoons focus on relationships between characters.

Miraculous is one of the worst shows on disney
When I first saw pictures of Samurai Jack there, I thought you were gonna complain about the new season a lot. I was relieved to find that there was only one complaint about it- no theme song.
Yep! Loved that show!
Holy non-sequitur, Batman!

Gravity Falls had everything! Music, Good backgrounds with hidden codes, Bill Cipher, #CipherHunt, Characters' design was good, And a good ending.
I know the best example on cartoon that's both episodic, but also has interconnected plot:
Jackie Chan Adventures.

Truest words ever spoken
The bright colors hurt my eyes, and the producers are like, "I know it's bad but we're making $ because kids like it"
Yea, they use too many vibrant colors, I don't get why even certain audiences aren't bothered by it. But yet again they might be people who love stuff that are pretty and don't care about quality or even good morals.
What about cartoons from 1950s-1980s were they good?
You're comparing the best examples from other eras to the worst examples of the modern era. I doubt yall even watch cartoons.
But hey according to this video the status quo is god and it's the most important thing on planet earth.
smegel limes Screw the status quo!!!
It's like you actively just disagree with him just because he used 90s shows as positive examples.
honestly i think we need a balence of episodic and non episodic shows imo
NeoVault57 6_6 Thanks dude
100 percent agree!
This video is probably going to be dated in a few years (this comment was posted on 10/1218 or 12/10/18
Hey is ren and stimpy good?
Yes
Yes it is!
So a question, if SU, AT, GF and SVFOF woldn't had any overarching plots... would they still be popular?
Now, there are exceptions, of course (Sonic Boom, The Loud House and its spin-off, The Casagrandes, DuckTales (2017), Muppet Babies (2018), and Netflix's Green Eggs and Ham (2019)), but I despise a lot of modern cartoons nowadays. Admittedly, some of them are cartoons that other people like that I don't, and here are some reasons why:
** The animation style, especially if cartoons use the CalArts animation style.
Even toilet humor can be done right if used properly (a character is forced to deal with it), but so many cartoons tend to go the wrong way (it just being there)
** Negative character stereotypes I've seen so many times before in media, especially ones that depict males as idiots, jerks, or idiotic jerks, and females as superior in intelligence (if not very naggy).
I certainly hope the 2020s will be a better era for cartoons. I'm still trying to get an animated series of my own off the ground by 2029.
How can you say that the 2010 was a bad era for cartoons, when we've goten stuff like,
Kipo and the Age of the Wildabeasts
Over the Garden Wall
Gravity Falls
Adventure Time
Dragon Prince
Hilda
Infinity Train
Ducktales 2017
Tangled the Series
Glitch Techs
Owl House
Amphiia
Big Hero Six the Series
Clone Wars (season 7)
Craig and the Creek
Castlavania the series (not a kids show, but still quality Western animation)
Mao Mao on Cartoonnetwork
Carmen Sandiego
OK Ko
Harvey Beaks
and all the shows you mentioned?
Two cartoons that I loved were Camp Lazlo and Foster's home for imaginary friends.
I loved them too
Simple is that nowadays they get lazy and greedy that's it
Part of what I miss is old animation
You made an entire video to crap on the 2010s'
Lmao
The only cartoons i can think of that were good when this came out were rick and morty, regular show my little pony (2010 only) tmnt 2012 and mlp fim was definately the best of those 4 but now thats over so rick and morty is one of the only good ones left but at least it will be on for a long time before it ends
yeah .. if i have a kid i will only show older animations
... either your standards for cartoons are weird or you need to watch more tv, star vs the forces of evil, gravity falls, ducktales woonoo, my little pony friendship is magic, milo murphy, guardians of the galaxy, and 7D along with many other modern cartoons disprove your statements
No bashing opinions.
Learn to respect them.
The biggest problem is the fact that every kids cartoon is a light hearted comedy
People should start making cartoons for teenagers nowadays
@@arminemartirosyan3014 The fact that we even had to go to this point is sad
Thank God I'm not the only one who didn't like S.U that much too. It's not the worst thing I saw but it's not very memorable for me.
You don't like Steven Universe? Cool!
@@adamshafeeq8685 Steven universe sucks
Steven Universe is a great modern cartoon.
Hell no Lmao
But I do like Pink Diamond tho
@@littlelady9801 *loads anti simp shotgun*

No it isn’t
Nice.
Yeah modern cartoons are bad, like I honestly love classic cartoons way more than modern cartoons! like classic cartoons and anime have way better art styles
Than modern cartoons!
Good old days
You forgot a BIG problem with modern cartoon nowadays, the one problem I did have with the new season of Samurai Jack...CRAPPY SERIES FINALES!!! Honestly, we waited 13 years...and that finale STUNK!! Episodes 1-8 were so amazing, I loved every minute. But then ep 9 started to go downhill in the last 5 minutes, and the last ep...the finale...the one we've waited and waited for...what the HELL happened?! And I know that's not the only one. Ya should have put that on your list. Bad series finales.
Never thought of this one! I completely missed it...
Yeah, from what I heard Regular Show didn't have too good of an ending either.
Is that bashing on Clarence I spy ?
Because Clarence is a funny, chill show.
So stop >: D

It’s nice not to feel alone
New PPG Show is announced: Oh...
It's directed by the OG creator Craig McCracken: OH YES!
It would be story-driven: Ah shi-, here we go again...
This video pretty much summed up everything, I absolutely despise what happened to cartoons
Also want to point out some constructive criticism:
Had been easier to understand what you were talking about if I had some more clear examples of what you meant when you went through a number.
P.S
Sorry for any grammar mistake not my first language.
When I compare the cartoons of then to now and when they shine, they are clearly some of the greatest stuff we have ever gotten. Clearly people call something good because of their nostalgia and we like to compare our childhoods to what we don't like today thinking this is the worst time to be alive. Heres just a few examples of greatt cartoons from the past few years
Adventure Time
Steven Universe
Gravity Falls
Star Vs The Forces Of Evil
DuckTales reboot
The Amazzing World of Gumball
Rick And Morty
BoJack Frekin Horseman!
Now lets look at 2000's cartoons from back then people consider great.
Spongebob (seasons 1-3)
Fairly Odd Parents
Rugrrats
The Powerpuff Girls
Avatar
Courage The Cowardly Dog
Ed Edd n Eddy
(the only one that could be huge in scale, drama, comedy, etc. seems to be Avatar). Don't even get me started on the 80's and 90's. Almost literally every cartoon back then was based on a toy brand or popular movie. Can you seriously look at shows back then and say they were not cheap cash grabs?
I agree there are some cartoons nowadays that actually very good
I used to love adventure time
FINALLY A VIDEO THAT LISTS EVERY PROBLEM I HAVE WITH TODAY'S CARTOONS. YOU JUST EARNED A SUB
Great video man. Completely explained my thoughts.
100 percent agree with #4
Wish Ladybug and Cat noir were not in here
Haha, me too.
Anyone remember Saved By the Bell?
No. 11) over reliance of meta humor. When used sparingly it's fine, but when a character just stops the show every second to address the obvious it just ruins the immersion.
Old cartoons also had meta humor... but it was subtle, of course.
I agree completely
I know this video is old but I feel the spongebob example should've used a episode from Season 9 or 10 back when this video came out. Since the example in the video is a bit old and came from the late 2000s. That's my only major critique.
Love your video. I agree with most of it but I could do without the Price Is Right sound effect. ☺
I have all the same opinions as you
16:58 normally I would be angry but I respect your opinion and think that others should do the same
I remember watching an episode of Steven Universe sometime ago.
6:40 Adventure Time and Spongebob Squarepants earned their place even if Spongebob Squarepants has had it for too long
And talking of Adventure Time, nice Adventure Time Ski Safari music in the background
90'S kid here:Your loss then. Gravity Falls and Steven Universe are great. I don't let nostalgia blind me from viewing a good cartoon.
@Misfit Sidney it’s really surprising to see someone actually not like gravity falls.
