Great video. There's definitely a lot more that can be said about Kareem's career and his era, but it would make it a 30+ minute video. A decent amount of information was new to me such as Clyde Lee's defense in 1973. It's good that you take the extra effort to research those things.
Around 2008 or 2009 was when I first learned about Kareem missing the playoffs twice, and I was shocked that I had never heard of it brought up before. When I was a kid I just saw 6 rings, 6 MVPs, and #1 in scoring. Without more modern resources to look into those numbers in more detail, it just seemed natural to put Kareem in the top 2 or 3 of all-time. It's good that now some people are starting to actually analyze Kareem's career in more detail, even if it's only on a small level.
Someone sent me a clip where Broussard actually brought up Kareem's shortcomings in missing the 1975 and 1976 Playoffs, which really surprised me because I had never before heard of anyone in sports media criticizing Kareem for any of his shortcomings. This is mostly because his prime was in such a forgettable era that most people don't have the knowledge or desire to actually examine the quality, or lack thereof, of his accomplishments or examine the black marks in his career.
There's a few corrections I'd like to make
5:10 - you meant to say Gus Johnson of the Bullets but mentioned Gus Williams of the Sonics instead
11:55 - Adrian Dantley first joined the Lakers in the 1978 season and Playoffs. He was with Buffalo in 1977.
13:20 - Due to the easier playoff format, top seeds were given a bye to skip the 1st Round and start the Playoffs in the 2nd round / ECSF / WCSF. So although Kareem only won 2 playoff series from 1975 - 1979 (once apiece in 1977 and 1979), he did actually make the 1977 WCF or the 3rd round while only having to win 1 playoff series.

He had great longevity, but isnt a better scorer than Jordan, Durant, Kobe. To me he isn't a top 3 center. 1) Wilt Chamberlain, 2) Hakeem, 3) Russell, 4) Shaq, 5) Kareem.

For people who see things and immediately decide to regurgitate obnoxious and irrelevant information, this video is extremely misleading. So many things are said with absolutely 0 context. One glaring example is how you state how well Dave Cowens played in the 1974 Finals compared to Kareem. You completely leave out that in game 7 of the finals that year Oscar shot 2-13 and scored 6 points. You give Oscar all the credit until he underperforms and then it’s Kareem’s fault. Comical. First round of 1981 playoffs vs Rockets do or die game 3 - Kareem: 32 points, 18 rebounds, 4 assists. Magic: 10 points 2-14 shooting. We all know how Magic underperformed in the 1984 Finals and cost Kareem another Finals MVP. Kareem for the series: 27 / 8 / 4 / 2 / 2 and 29 in game 7. Give me a break on how Magic and Oscar saved his legacy. You nitpick Kareem’s failures and then call him “the most overrated player in NBA history” when you can do that for every single consensus top - 10 career player of all time. You sound like a Jordan-Stan who is insecure of another legend challenging his place in history. Stop reaching so hard and give it a break.

Also, if they kept track of blocks and steals for the first 4 years of Kareem’s career he would be: #1 All-Time in points, #3 All-Time in rebounds, #1 All-Time in blocks, #1 in career assists for a center, and 1,500 steals.

I grew up playing and watching basketball in the 70's (my middle school, high school, and early college years), and Kareem was hands down the most dominant player of the decade, who could have been voted the MVP almost every year during that time. That certain players or teams had occasional success controlling him, and that he did not always have the best players around him did not keep him from having his team in the hunt almost every year that he played. He was drafted by a small market expansion team and turned them into an instant contender. Perhaps the only thing comparable is what Lebron was able to do for the Cavs decades later. Unfortunately, most people are only familiar with Jabbar after Magic Johnson joined him when he was already in his 30's with the Lakers, and was soon willing to pass the baton. Kareem is top 5 all time without a doubt, and there are plenty of arguments that his NBA career was the best of all time.

    • @bobbymira8234
      @bobbymira8234 2 месяца назад

I don't know about top 5 WITHOUT a Doubt? You have guys like LeBron, Kobe, Jordan, Bird, Magic, Hakeem, Shaq, Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, that could be regarded as better because of their all around games and played vs more difficult competition. I get Kareem put up great numbers in points and rebounds, but he didn't have great shake n bake moves, he was all sky hook. He couldn't move like Hakeem and couldn't dribble the ball worth a dang either. He's def a top 15 guy or whatever and can make an argument for even better but I wouldn't say top 5 without a doubt. Def some doubt because of his ERA and the lack of ballers during the 70s. The 80s is when it started to get serious. Before the 80s there were a lot of shit players that would never make the NBA today.

‘77 playoffs against the Blazers, you tell me what more could Kareem have done? 30 PPG, 60% shooting from the field, 16 RPG, 3.8 BPG, he led every player in PPG, RPG, and BPG. Look up the 1988 NBA Finals Game 6, final minute. Kareem is in decline, that is obvious, but guess who they give the ball too when it mattered most? Lakers trusted old man Kareem and even if you think he wasn’t fouled on the play, guess what? He sunk both free throws with his team on the brink of elimination. We all know Shaq or Wilt couldn’t do that, just shows how great Kareem was. Overall man your video glossed over a lot. Yea, Kareem isn’t perfect, no player is, but he is no doubt top 3. He couldn’t decide the era he played in. Also, 4th quarter of Game 5 of the 1980 NBA Finals, Kareem drops 14 on a swelled up ankle and 40 total for the game. Look it up. Put some respect on his name. He wasn’t flashy and he didn’t get along with people but who cares the man played damn good basketball.

1976 was a weird time for the NBA. There were 18 teams in the league and nine per conference, with 2 divisions per conference. 5 teams had to make it from each conference, and this is where division rules come into play. There was a limit on how many teams from each division could make it. Specifically that there had to be at least two teams from each division to make it to the playoffs. This heavily messed up the West playoffs that year because it kicked out the 40-42 Lakers (who would’ve been the four seed if the seedings were done like they are now) and replaced them with two below 40 win teams in the other division. And don’t act like Kareem had super stacked teams in the 70s and was a flat out loser when he had zero all stars in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979. Also I think you forgot that Kareem missed 20 games in 78 due to broken hand which 1. caused him to miss the all star game and was likely why Walton was selected over him for the All NBA Team (along with Portland being amazing when he was on the court), and 2. heavily affected their record and playoff results given that they were 37-25 with Kareem on the court in 1978 (translates to a 48 win record vs the 45 they got in 78), which means that they would’ve played the 44 win Brian Winters & Marques Johnson led Bucks in the first round vs the eventual West champs in the Sonics.

If Shaq or Hakeem played with Magic and Oscar their whole careers with their primes in a league that didn't even have all the best players (Dr. J, Barry, Gervin, Gilmore, Cunningham, Thompson, etc) and was full of sub-50 win Finals teams, they'd be challenging Bill Russell's rings record. Kareem wouldn't win any rings as the leader in their shoes when the only time he did win as the leader was with Oscar leading the Playoffs in APG and while playing against the weakest opponents of any title team in 1971.

Most have him top 5. Most have Kobe top 10 but Kobe should be higher than Kareem all time cause Kobe contributed more to most of his rings. In Kareem’s last two rings he won in 87 & 88 he wasn’t even an all star level player he was a role player & was really carried on his back by Magic. If Kobe averaged 17 PPG or 14 PPG like Kareeem did in 87 & 88 we wouldn’t hear the end of it & Kobe would be a top 30 or top 40 player if he did that.
Kareem gets elevated for longevity & compiling big #s in the 70s even though he wasn’t winning anything other than that 71 chip. Kareem dominated the 70s which was the weakest era ever with no dominant teams, the 70s was so bad the NBA was on tape delay & a lot of those guys were playing in the game high off cocaine with the disco era during that time. Kareem legacy was saved by Magic & he was carried by Magic in 4 of the 5 rings they won. Kareem is super overrated, it’s so crazy the hype Kareeem gets, people really think Kareem contributed more Lakers rings than Magic. Proves that anyone can shoot his mouth off on line. Those of us who were around in the 70's and 80's and most individuals who really know bb appreciate the greatness of KAJ. Players in the 70's were: Chamberlain, West, Cowans, Barry, Erving, Gilmore, Walton, Hayes, Unseld, Havilchek, Thurmond, Robertson all HOFs. Except for a fading Oscar (check his stats) none of these players played with Kareem. Why do most experts place KAJ in the top 3 of all time? You claim to know better.
What are your impeccable credentials? Anyone who knows anything about the 80 finals including Magic Johnson knows
full well that Kareem was primarily responsible for leading the Lakers to wins in the first 3 games of the series that paved the way for Magic's heroics in game 6. Also would anyone in his right mind suggest that Kevin M deserved the mvp in the 1985 finals? It has only happened once in NBA history that a player on the losing team received the trophy. Kareem was the unanimous pick for the honour that year. Kareem scored 32 against Parish and Walton in the clinching game of the 87 series at the age of 40. What was Jordan doing at that age: missing the playoffs in consecutive years. You go on and on about how much Kareem needed Magic and Oscar for his success yet you neglect to mention that neither player won a title without Kareem. Oh yes, Trump won the election in 2020.

I liked the video and the depth put into it but have to disagree on a few points. Kareem absolutely deserved the 85 FMVP. After a terrible game 1, for the next 5 games Kareem averaged 28.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 6.0 assists on 61% shooting. Magic was piling up assists because of Kareem. Magic also had a drop in his shooting % in this series of 6.7% compared to the regular season. Kareem was without question the leader to this title. Since you seem to favor Magic, I feel it is only fair to discuss Magic's failures while playing with Kareem. The 84 Finals had several key mistakes at crucial times and Magic was the player who made them. If LA had won game 7 in Boston, Kareem would have been the FMVP and not Magic. In game 7 Kareem scored 29 points on 12 of 22 shooting and outplayed Parish throughout the series. And in 1980 Kareem was voted to win the FMVP AFTER Magic's great game 6 but because Kareem was not present CBS asked the voters to change their votes so Magic would win the award. This is covered in the book "Kareem" pages 140-141. Kareem is why LA won the other 3 games. And in 1981 playoffs vs Rockets, in the deciding game at the Forum, Magic is why LA lost that game. Magic in 47 minutes scored 10 points on 2 of 14 shooting and was 6 of 11 from the FT line. Magic missed 2 FT late in the game and then on the last possession shot an air ball from 10 feet out. Kareem had outplayed Moses in that game but you are leaving out Magic's bad game. And Magic had come back from his injury in game 65 of the regular season so he had 17 games to get ready for this playoff match. I feel context needs to be applied toward these games and situations. Thanks!

Kareem dominated the 80s as well, nice try but this is “competition” point is ridiculous. He’s a top 7 player at worst, more than likely top 5. He would’ve won the 1980 FMVP if he didn’t get hurt for G6, he also won the 85 FMVP at 37 years old, he was arguably the best player in the court with guys like McHale, Parish, Bird, Magic and Worthy and he averaged less MPG than all of them so don’t say Milwaukee was the only time he was the best player in a championship team. The 81 series against Houston he got outplayed by one of the greatest centers of all time in Moses Malone, he wasn’t a scrub and Kareem still averaged 27,17 and 4, don’t make it seem like Kareem did nothing. That entire series was very close, no team lost by more than 6 points. Also, the Lakers lost the last game by 3 and Kareem outplayed Malone in that game. The Rockets team also went on to make the Finals and played the Celtics tougher than most people thought and took 2 games from them. You’re stating facts and bring up some good points but they’re incomplete. Kareem is one of the best passing, scoring, rebounding and defensive big men of all time. And please stop with this leading the league in scoring non sense. Shaq led the league in scoring once, Robinson did it once, Hakeem, Ewing, Malone etc. never did. It doesn’t take away from their greatness. Wilt even said Kareem is the best scorer he’s ever seen.

In 1973 yeah clyde lee lock him but he at least didn't get fucking outscored by him compare to Terry it was a black mark I agree
Yeah 1974 Finals Game 7 Dave Cowhen outscored Kareem yeah but throughout that series Kareem carry the bucks to seven games when Oscar Robertson was just rusted and nobody on bucks showed up
And for that entire series he outplayed Dave Cowhen averaging nearly 33 points like saying Kareem getting outscored by Cowhen hurt his legacy is equivalent of saying Lebron legacy is hurt because he was outscored by Dwight in Game 6 in 2009 ECF
Kareem missed playoffs in 1976 because of Playoffs rules Lakers have unironically the 2nd best record in west
In 1977 He got swept but it's not his fault lamfao he lost because he have no help whatsoever while Blazzers where miles better team and where considered a potential dynasty if Walton was healthy
Again in 1978 and 1979 both Sonics team make finals while Kareem was carrying a team which have no business in being playoffs in 1979 Sonics won championship like the "Hofer" where Jamaal Wilkes who averaged 15 points and Adrian Dantley was coming of from bench and average 12 points they just lose to better team
Also yeah magic have great performance in game 6 but best player in Lakers was Kareem he make Lakers to be in position to get 3 win lead against Sixers and was flat out best player in the series
1983 76ers where like one of the all time greatest nba team and Lakers where struggling from injury
1985 he definetly deserve FMVP not only because he was Lakers lead scorer but he scored like 36 points back to back in clinching game and he was the best defender that shut down McHale Bird or Parish whoever he was guarding plus he also outscored prime MVP Bird and magic
1982 he leads Lakers in scoring so no way in hell he was carried
So yeah casual do the research before you make shit up

      @Amick44 2 года назад +1

I believe it is a solid argument. In between Oscar and Magic, there was Gail Goodrich, Jamaal Wilkes, Adrian Dantley, Norm Nixon. Some very good players.
He had to have 2 of the 5 top guards to ever set foot on a court to bring home the big prize.
Of course it didn't stop him from winning MVPs for getting all NBA selections. And even more so in his era, basketball truly was a big man's game. The MVP nearly every season was the center. So, in that time, centers were expected to dominate. That only changed when Magic and Bird came into the league. Only then the teams with high draft picks, really start to look at picking the best player.

In my opinion, Magic was the real MVP of that series (just like Curry was MVP in 2015 Finals and not Iguodala) and by far the most important player of the Showtime Lakers. That became clear back in 1980. It's true that every great player needs help to win a title, but Kareem needed so much help that his team is no longer his team.

I agree, Islamic Muslim Jabbar is the most overrated. You know who else is overrated? The inefficient, never shot 50% from the field for not even 1 season; Kobe Snake Boy Bryant. Magic carried Karim, and Shaq carried Kobe. And then Kobe got a front court of Gasol/Bynum/Odom. Those are 3 very tall quality players.
Im telling yall, the NBA's darling The Lakers always put together stacked teams to win them championships.

Oh and dont forget Stephanie Curry...Yeah, Muhammed Abdul Jihadist, Kobe Mamba Bryant and Steven Kerry are the 3 most overrated players in NBA history, because they were spoiled and put on luxurious teams that played great together and won championships.

I am sure any ancient superstar players are overrated. In those eras, basketball techniques and strategies are primitive. But I still think the most overrated ancient player is Bill Russell. Somehow people rank him higher than Chamberlain. He was fking owned by Chamberlain. His defense was also shit. He actually did the extreme of what people criticize Lebron for, taking easy shots. Put him in modern era, he is a just blue collar center.
