A few months late, but im a bit confused. Do I already have to have a vps instance running to access this or can this all be done from a single local host? Ive been trying to create an oracle instance for a while now to no avail. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

It could be that after free trial they will terminate the instance (boot volume should remain if you didn’t exceed 200gb in total) - you run again but this time using boot volume OCID and AMD Always Free x64 instance. Just heads up

You can use so-called “Windows subsystem for Linux” and run Ubuntu with cron (periodic job). If you don’t mind to leave it running and executing script - for days or even weeks, depends on when Oracle will add capacity in your particular region. Or maybe there’s a way to run PHP script in e.g. Windows Scheduler, never tried

Bro nicely done, I had an ampere ubunutu which I terminated due to issues and when I tried to create new one, out of capacity errors started, just found your article in medium page and have setup the steps from your article..it's been 2 days , nothing got provisioned yet in Swiss region.. I have kept a 5 minute interval.. any clue on the number of days it may take?
You need to assign IP address to the instance in a way how it’s written in the README. And use private SSH key which corresponds to the public one set in .env. Username is usually opc or ubuntu, you can check on instance page

Just reporting back that my machine was finally created, thus it took roughly 4 days. I will add that I upgraded my Google Cloud account to a paid account and created the instance in the free tier, so it is still fee. I believe that the paid subscription with the script helped speedup the instance creation.
I am having an issue where I cannot find the instances folder the closest thing I can find is "compute/instances" but it has none of the required information does anyone have any advice on how to find the instances folder?
is this doable on Windows? what is the black console you keep pulling up and pasting instructions into? Do I also need a GitHub account/GitHub for desktop?
I execute commands inside an SSH session on the remote Linux server (always free Google Cloud one). Sorry, I won't be able to teach you basic things, believe me, there's nothing in that regard that you're not gonna be able to find by yourself on the Internet.
There's a Putty for Windows if you already have a server which will execute periodic requests for you. Maybe just Windows can be used for such purpose with Scheduler. Never tried
@Xitroff I had this doubt, every now and then the log.txt file remains empty for 15mins straight and then you can see the log appened "Out of capacity...." Every minute it should request and the error msg should be responded right but sometimes I have observed in the last 5-6 days, the log file remains empty? whats happening, is the server not responding because the request is being sent every minute(cron job) or any idea?
Try “echoing” something in the very beginning of the index.php file, right after use statements, for example, echo (new \DateTime())->format('Y-m-d H:i:s');

You can terminate the instance and preserve boot volume. Then create new instance with needed image (OS), attach your old boot volume as block volume, copy all the necessary data, detach and delete old. If I understood correctly your needs
Possibly could be depends on the region. Try to choose different availability domain (if there are more than one, again depends on your region). But I believe you can still set the script running against A1 - it will succeed whenever Oracle will add capacity
Its been 5 days(Out of Capacity), running script for a Ampere 24GB RAM 200GB HDD in Santiago(Chile), not sure when it will allocate an instance. My question is that I am using a 1GB ram 1GB hdd instance to run the script to get the above instance. After 25days my trial will expire. Now as I am aiming for Ampere 24GB ram with 200GB HDD, what will happen after the 25th day if I still didnt get any instance. Because for a free user the total space is 200GB right? but I have used 1GB for running the script. If theres a chance to get the Ampere instance will it be granted with 200GB space or no?
@@Xitroff Yes you are right, but my question arises because I have created a new account in Santiago home region and I have 30days full features to test and after which I will go back to the free tier if I dont upgrade. So now that I have 25days left, it would be possible to get the full 200GB hdd with 24GB RAM right(while having the AMD instance with 50GB run the test script and once the main instance is created I can deleted the amd one and when then trial expires I can stick to the main instance with 200GB HDD)? but after the trial period, like you said I wont be able to get because the AMD would be using atleast 50GB hdd. @@sanjeetakaxaero if you won’t update to pay as you go, on day 30-31 every 201gb and beyond will be deleted (reclaimed), I won’t be risking giving the system ability to decide which instance to delete and would leave just one ampere 4/24 and 200gb of storage at by moment, nothing else more

My whole point is 1) Will I be able to able to get an 4/24/200 instance before the 30days trial expires? and then I can delete the AMD instance right away so my 4/24/200 remains permanent on the 30-31st day. I know its hard to answer but just your thoughts out of your experience. 2) Lets say, if I dont get a 4/24/200 instance then can I delete this account and try in another region?
@@sanjeetakaxaero i’d say there’s a higher chance to create 4/24 being on trial than later without the upgrade. also maybe try creating two 2/12 with 100 HDD each. I wouldn’t recommend deleting an account, there’s high chance you won’t make it creating in any other region

You can terminate the instance - make sure you uncheck “delete boot volume”. The use boot volume OCID and run instance (script). It will succeed when capacity will be added
Change directory to the one where .pem file is located. Run a command: pwd This will show where you are, e.g. /home/user It means full path to a private key is /home/user/file.pem

Let me just copy-paste from README: Before the instance creation, script will call ListInstances OCI API method and check whether there're already existing instances with the same $shape, as well as number of them $maxRunningInstancesOfThatShape(you can safely adjust the last one if you wanna e.g. two VM.Standard.A1.Flex with 2/12 each).
maybe will be easy to use terraform to extract all information instead of going via request -> terraform -> instead of creating new instance, you can select save as stack, this will give an option after that to download, execute, etc - Thanks for idea very useful!

Update: On firefox it's error 500, there you can find the required parameters. Now I am facing a supposedly parsing error with the .pem file, I'll try to get it fixed or open an issue in the github.

Though when I was trying it manually just now, there seems to be a "too much request from user" or something like that error when I spam it. Maybe I'll just follow your video slowly when I have the time. I didn't realize that this approach doesn't require a pc running. If you run AMD x64 within Oracle cloud you already consumed at least 50GB of HDD, so launching ARM with 200GB won’t be possible. I’d suggest to run the script within Google Cloud platform always free tier instance and delete all instances from OCI

What I wanted to ask the values that I entered in the .env file will not be affected in any manner right(after deleting instance in OC)? like oci public key, oci subnet id, oci image id?

Edit: Made it work there is an issue on the curl data i got from the instance, availability zone replace one word with dollar sign, figured it out when i tried creating instance on the console, check the availability zone name, there it is slightly different one.

Хороший вопрос. Можно создать образ загрузочного диска, из него - новый boot volume. После этого присоединить его к инстансу, отключив текущий диск. Но дело в том, что остановить экземпляр точно придётся. Теоретически за это время кто-то может создать экземпляр в том же домене доступности. Из моей практики день-два работы скрипта было достаточно с запуском команды раз в минуту - Оракл периодически добавляет мощности.

If you don’t mind running Windows subsystem for Linux or Linux (virtual machine) for months 24/7 - go for it. But it’s worth to have it running in the cloud anyway. You can run at Oracle always free AMD which usually can be launched without “out of host capacity” error

Consider switching to a pay-as-you-go plan to enjoy priority access over free tier users while retaining all the benefits of always free resources. Keep in mind that you'll need approximately EUR 120 balance on your credit card for a temporary hold.

I can´t understand how and why the deleted my always free instances and obviously as free tier user you can not contact them (previously I sent some emails to the service desk because I had problems to create an account and they were absolutely useless). @@Ayahuaska8 I bet they won’t be able to change a region, at the same time their registration flow is so bad in regards of financial fraud that there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to create an account after asking support to delete your current one. Otherwise I’d recommend to register within Frankfurt/Germany, it’s not that bad in regards of host capacity there

I am in need of 4 Ocpus with 24GB RAM, hence from the link you gave above, I can only opt Ampere processor(which would suit my need) and it makes sense when you mentioned this "Usually there’re no issues with creating AMD x64 instance which is also Always Free. I didn’t really get the question because you can create or restore backup only if you still have a volume. Let’s just assume that you want to download precious contents of this volume. You can export volume as an image docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/Content/Compute/Tasks/imageimportexport.htm#Exporting but I bet this option is available only if you’ll switch to pay as you go
@@Xitroff thanks for replying things i have tried:- 1) create a new machine , create a backup for the boot volume. 2) restore bool volume to boot volume =>restored_boot_volume (it will create a new bool voulme without a VM acctached to it) 3) create a VM to attach this restored_boot_volume. but i want to attached this restored_boot_volume to attach to a existing machine as boot volumne (as creating a new machine is not always possilbe) reason:- if i messed up someting with the orignal boot volume as i want it back to default new state.
@@sumer420 it’s definitely possible to attach former boot volume as a block volume of any instance. I did that a while ago to restore data, though I can’t recall how did I mount it to become visible in the filesystem
@Xitroff i know we can mount any BOOT volume to any other instance as BLOCK volume. reality :- boot volumne > backup > resotre_voulme > create new VM expectation :- boot volumne > backup > resotre_voulme > attach to existing VM as BOOT volume but in case i brick my OS in arm (unable to connect to it due to unkown reason). but deleting a but i have a backup for the BOOT volume from when i created the machine new i want that working copy attached to the birck vm

I’d suggest to try out Oracle Linux Cloud Developer image which has it preinstalled docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/oracle-linux/developer/index.htm all you need to do is run “vncpasswd” command, forward port “ssh 1.2.3.4 -L 5900:localhost:5900” on your host machine - and then just connect within your favorite client
@@Xitroff my Instance suddenly stopped working, oracle send me a no-reply email telling me that: The host for the instance(s) listed in this notification experienced an issue, and we were unable to relocate your instance(s) to a new host due to a lack of availability of the specific shape in the Availability Domain your instance was deployed. running nicely before today, I dont know what makes my instance suddenly stopped
@@MohammadTaufiqurrohman this happens rarely from time to time with every cloud providers when you need to recreate the instance. no worries, now there's a possibility to specify ocid of the boot volume (check the README), your data stays safe anyway

Спасибо, оставил на ночь и получил зверь-машину в своё пользование в San José. Почему-то она оказалась без публичного IP, не знаю задумано так или не, но привязать его потом очень просто. Не очень понял зачем нужен шаг с перемещением всего в www, я его пропустил и всё отлично отработало. Я правильно понимаю, что так как у меня месяц триала ещё не закончился, то мне в конце месяца всё-равно заморозят и надо будет повторять заново?
1) Без айпи - да, так задумано, раньше менее 4-х было доступно 2) www - чтобы можно было настроить cron вызовом curl localhost (но я сильно не развил эту тему) 3) инстанс уничтожат, диск останется - указав AD и boot volume id можно будет запустить уже навсегда P.S. я думал, во время триала теперь уже нет проблем с созданием

Hey, most of the time it’s a terminal and interaction with either remote server by SSH (when there’s gcp-free label under the username) or local MacBook Air. If you use Windows, then Putty is your choice

It could be that after free trial they will terminate the instance (boot volume should remain if you didn’t exceed 200gb in total) - you run again but this time using boot volume OCID and AMD Always Free x64 instance. Just heads up

You can use so-called “Windows subsystem for Linux” and run Ubuntu with cron (periodic job). If you don’t mind to leave it running and executing script - for days or even weeks, depends on when Oracle will add capacity in your particular region. Or maybe there’s a way to run PHP script in e.g. Windows Scheduler, never tried

Update: 18 Apr 2022, my vps got disabled. so basically I don't think this compute is a reliable machine if you want to deploy some thing important. I have tried to add my visa card but I always got declined.

You need to assign IP address to the instance in a way how it’s written in the README. And use private SSH key which corresponds to the public one set in .env. Username is usually opc or ubuntu, you can check on instance page

Just reporting back that my machine was finally created, thus it took roughly 4 days. I will add that I upgraded my Google Cloud account to a paid account and created the instance in the free tier, so it is still fee.
I believe that the paid subscription with the script helped speedup the instance creation.

@Xitroff I had this doubt, every now and then the log.txt file remains empty for 15mins straight and then you can see the log appened "Out of capacity...." Every minute it should request and the error msg should be responded right but sometimes I have observed in the last 5-6 days, the log file remains empty? whats happening, is the server not responding because the request is being sent every minute(cron job) or any idea?
Try “echoing” something in the very beginning of the index.php file, right after use statements, for example,

You can terminate the instance and preserve boot volume. Then create new instance with needed image (OS), attach your old boot volume as block volume, copy all the necessary data, detach and delete old. If I understood correctly your needs

Possibly could be depends on the region. Try to choose different availability domain (if there are more than one, again depends on your region). But I believe you can still set the script running against A1 - it will succeed whenever Oracle will add capacity
Its been 5 days(Out of Capacity), running script for a Ampere 24GB RAM 200GB HDD in Santiago(Chile), not sure when it will allocate an instance.
My question is that I am using a 1GB ram 1GB hdd instance to run the script to get the above instance. After 25days my trial will expire. Now as I am aiming for Ampere 24GB ram with 200GB HDD, what will happen after the 25th day if I still didnt get any instance. Because for a free user the total space is 200GB right? but I have used 1GB for running the script. If theres a chance to get the Ampere instance will it be granted with 200GB space or no?
You’ll never get 200gb hdd as your AMD instance already consumes at least 50. Change ampere settings to 150

So now that I have 25days left, it would be possible to get the full 200GB hdd with 24GB RAM right(while having the AMD instance with 50GB run the test script and once the main instance is created I can deleted the amd one and when then trial expires I can stick to the main instance with 200GB HDD)? but after the trial period, like you said I wont be able to get because the AMD would be using atleast 50GB hdd. @@sanjeetakaxaero if you won’t update to pay as you go, on day 30-31 every 201gb and beyond will be deleted (reclaimed), I won’t be risking giving the system ability to decide which instance to delete and would leave just one ampere 4/24 and 200gb of storage at by moment, nothing else more

My whole point is 1) Will I be able to able to get an 4/24/200 instance before the 30days trial expires? and then I can delete the AMD instance right away so my 4/24/200 remains permanent on the 30-31st day. @@sanjeetakaxaero i’d say there’s a higher chance to create 4/24 being on trial than later without the upgrade. also maybe try creating two 2/12 with 100 HDD each. I wouldn’t recommend deleting an account, there’s high chance you won’t make it creating in any other region

Any script to boot oracle stopped instance that says out of host capacity as well? One of mine was stopped and now it won't boot.
You can terminate the instance - make sure you uncheck “delete boot volume”. The use boot volume OCID and run instance (script). It will succeed when capacity will be added

Change directory to the one where .pem file is located. Run a command:
pwd
This will show where you are, e.g. /home/user
It means full path to a private key is /home/user/file.pem

Before the instance creation, script will call ListInstances OCI API method and check whether there're already existing instances with the same $shape, as well as number of them $maxRunningInstancesOfThatShape(you can safely adjust the last one if you wanna e.g. two VM.Standard.A1.Flex with 2/12 each).

If you run AMD x64 within Oracle cloud you already consumed at least 50GB of HDD, so launching ARM with 200GB won’t be possible. I’d suggest to run the script within Google Cloud platform always free tier instance and delete all instances from OCI

Made it work there is an issue on the curl data i got from the instance, availability zone replace one word with dollar sign, figured it out when i tried creating instance on the console, check the availability zone name, there it is slightly different one.

Хороший вопрос. Можно создать образ загрузочного диска, из него - новый boot volume. После этого присоединить его к инстансу, отключив текущий диск. Но дело в том, что остановить экземпляр точно придётся. Теоретически за это время кто-то может создать экземпляр в том же домене доступности. Из моей практики день-два работы скрипта было достаточно с запуском команды раз в минуту - Оракл периодически добавляет мощности.

If you don’t mind running Windows subsystem for Linux or Linux (virtual machine) for months 24/7 - go for it. But it’s worth to have it running in the cloud anyway. You can run at Oracle always free AMD which usually can be launched without “out of host capacity” error

@@Ayahuaska8 I bet they won’t be able to change a region, at the same time their registration flow is so bad in regards of financial fraud that there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to create an account after asking support to delete your current one. Otherwise I’d recommend to register within Frankfurt/Germany, it’s not that bad in regards of host capacity there

@1:02 you were able to do scp transfer, I just created my account a day ago and how do I get access to IP when the instance is not created. I mean I can understand what you are doing in that timestamp but how to execute that when I dont have any instance created.
Usually there’re no issues with creating AMD x64 instance which is also Always Free. You can run the script on that to acquire ARM one (or two :)

@@sanjeetakaxaero I recommend to terminate such a monstrous instance, it’s not free and will become expensive or get terminated upon trial end. Instead, create always free 1/8opcu + 1GB of RAM www.oracle.com/cloud/free/#always-free

I will terminate this current instance, create a simple AMD instance just enough to login remotely and execute as you mentioned in your tutorial.

I didn’t really get the question because you can create or restore backup only if you still have a volume. Let’s just assume that you want to download precious contents of this volume. You can export volume as an image docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/Content/Compute/Tasks/imageimportexport.htm#Exporting but I bet this option is available only if you’ll switch to pay as you go

things i have tried:- 1) create a new machine , create a backup for the boot volume.
2) restore bool volume to boot volume =>restored_boot_volume (it will create a new bool voulme without a VM acctached to it)
3) create a VM to attach this restored_boot_volume.
but i want to attached this restored_boot_volume to attach to a existing machine as boot volumne (as creating a new machine is not always possilbe)
reason:- if i messed up someting with the orignal boot volume as i want it back to default new state.
@@sumer420 it’s definitely possible to attach former boot volume as a block volume of any instance. I did that a while ago to restore data, though I can’t recall how did I mount it to become visible in the filesystem

I’d suggest to try out Oracle Linux Cloud Developer image which has it preinstalled docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/oracle-linux/developer/index.htm all you need to do is run “vncpasswd” command, forward port “ssh 1.2.3.4 -L 5900:localhost:5900” on your host machine - and then just connect within your favorite client

running nicely before today, I dont know what makes my instance suddenly stopped
@@MohammadTaufiqurrohman this happens rarely from time to time with every cloud providers when you need to recreate the instance. no worries, now there's a possibility to specify ocid of the boot volume (check the README), your data stays safe anyway

Спасибо, оставил на ночь и получил зверь-машину в своё пользование в San José. Почему-то она оказалась без публичного IP, не знаю задумано так или не, но привязать его потом очень просто.
Не очень понял зачем нужен шаг с перемещением всего в www, я его пропустил и всё отлично отработало.
Я правильно понимаю, что так как у меня месяц триала ещё не закончился, то мне в конце месяца всё-равно заморозят и надо будет повторять заново?
1) Без айпи - да, так задумано, раньше менее 4-х было доступно
2) www - чтобы можно было настроить cron вызовом curl localhost (но я сильно не развил эту тему)
3) инстанс уничтожат, диск останется - указав AD и boot volume id можно будет запустить уже навсегда
P.S. я думал, во время триала теперь уже нет проблем с созданием

That is really weird, Oracle uses some external payment system and their fraud algorithms are unknowable :(
Ask to Oracle Cloud Customer Email or message, and tell them your email address, and then they will solve this problem. I solved with this way.

@@alexandermenkov возможно, уже и забанили, похожее происходит с экземплярами free trial, они пропадают из панели, но SSH ещё какое-то время работает

Hey, most of the time it’s a terminal and interaction with either remote server by SSH (when there’s gcp-free label under the username) or local MacBook Air. If you use Windows, then Putty is your choice
