11:02 you asked about what's illegal. Basically if your prime objective is the ball, then the other contact is deemed to be incidental. But if your objective is the opposition player first and then the ball, it will be a free kick. Eg pushing him out with your hands and then putting them up to catch it, that's a free. But eyes on the ball and it's basically anything goes.
If you love action you'll love this sport. As a biased M.F.C. supporter (oldest professional football team in the world) if you are looking for a game to watch look back on the 2021 Grand Final, especially the second half.
As to your question about what’s legal. You can’t put hands on the opponent’s back as you jump, and you have to be making a legitimate attempt to mark, not just an unrealistic jump. The umpires are sometimes a bit lenient on the hands rule, but when it does get called, a free kick goes against the offending player. Apart from that it’s pretty much anything goes.
The AFL has it's own youtube channel you could watch some game highlights if you want. You just missed the 2024 season by a couple of months, so now we all have to wait until next year (summer what a bummer). Also....... Go Lions.
Watch the 2023 Grand Final. Collingwood v Brisbane. One of the best Grand Finals going. Close finish with lots of lead changes. You won't be disappointed.
Hawthorn Hawks!! Great to see you getting amongst the AFL world. Some player and topic suggestions Cyril Rioli, Buddy Franklin, Hawks 3Peat's, Eddie Betts, Dustin Martin, Tackles & run downs.
The most common injuries are soft tissue. If the sport was as dangerous as you seem to think, mothers would not let their kids play If a player marks the ball with in the the field of play and in the process carries it across the boudary or score line, the mark counts
That mark you were asking about, where he went through the goalposts, doesn't count as a goal. The guy who marked it touched the ball before it crossed the goal line. (Its the line on the ground between the posts that matters). He sort of carried the ball over the line. For a goal to count it must come off the foot of an attacking player and not be touched by a defender on the way through. And yes, there are rules around speccys. It must be a realistic attempt. You can't just go jumping on someone's shoulders if you have absolutely no chance of marking the ball i.e. if you jump too early you are penalized. And cleats must be plastic too, for this reason. No metal ones allowed.
Additionally, if he juggled the ball over the line but still ended up with the ball in his hands, it would be what is called a "rushed behind" because the player didn't have control of the ball in the initial touch before going over the goal line
Collingwood is your team. American Mason Cox plays for them. Best goals video. Please note money cannot buy these teams, Elon Musk cannot buy Collingwood they are "owned" by their members and anyone can be a member $80 a year, members (fans) elect board who run the team. The game is run by the AFL which is appointed by the clubs to oversee them and the game. All this means that the clubs and league are run for the love of the game and the teams themselves which is a very difficult concept for American and soccer fans to understand.

Do yourself a huge favour. This link will show you a highlights package of Australian Rules in the 1980's done by the host broadcaster, set to the music of the mighty Little River Band when they were fronted by Australia's greatest male singer, John Farnham. The game looks a bit different these days, but this gives you an insight into the way it was played in that era ruclips.net/video/GbtiUrHUhRw/видео.htmlsi=sreUx-m6sdfncIx4

50 greatest goals is a good one too.
The AFL releases a few minutes long highlights package of every game. Grand Finals (super bowl equivalent) are a good place to start.
Number 2 was by far the best!!
Just for information, Gary Moorcroft actually broke his hip taking that mark.
@darrenmoore1305 yep and it ended his career. I'm a Bombers supporter
Nah, Sampi....

BTW number 2 was Play of the Day on the American ESPN Sportscentre show! Unusual for a sport most Americans have never heard of 😉

Try Last 2 minutes 2023 grand final ( your superbowl). Then try las 2 minutes of any Collingwood game in 2023 a amazing year of close games.
Also the close games through 2022... 2022 and 2023 was a wild ride for Collingwood supporters... thos big comebacks...
If you take a mark like those, you feel no pain ....adrenalin makes it disappear ( for at least a minute or two !)

Number 3 has always been controversial. There's no way that was a mark. Ablett got paid that one on reputation alone.
Only Rule is you can't put your hands on their back.
