Rather you than me Richard, being a Queenslander I would have died in that snowstorm, I missed Cradle Mt when we were there so it was nice you showing us around. Looking forward to your next videos.
Rule number on of Tasmania travel.... be prepared for weather changes all the time! haha. Great episode mate and just such a shame on the cloud cover. Would have been great to see what you're able to do in ideal conditions. Despite that, that was beautiful light placement on the boat shed!
Thanks Andrew, very true indeed regarding the weather. The first 3 nights weren't great but the other 2 nights were awesome. It's always hard when trying to shoot nightscapes because there's not many options when the clouds are thick.
Got to say thanks - I've found this channel very inspiring. In the UK I have similar issues with cloud (and light pollution) but I've now tried light painting, need a bit more practice but I think it can make some of our old stone churches and ruins and more really come alive. Little creepy in the graveyards in the middle of the night though disturbing birds that fly out of the trees, owls twitahooing nearby, and probably rabbits running around in the under growth, but I guess it beats worrying about spiders and snakes! Stars in Australia were amazing, especially in the out back around Port Augusta when I was once there.
Ah what a place! Great to see it again... and some awesome images despite the conditions!! I’m honestly surprised there’s be snow like that at that tome of year! Looked like more (certainly around the lake) than when we were there in July!! Thanks so much for the shoutout!! 😀 Looking forward to more from Tassie :)
Thanks my friend. The morning I was there was the first snow fall for 2019 and it was a big one ...!! Even the locals were getting excited. I don't think you can ever get too much Cradle action.
Thanks heaps Alyn. Cradle Mountain is a wonderful place to shoot but not easy. You know what I mean when it comes to fighting the elements ... love your latest video mate.
Not only another great video but you taught me how to make toast and sunnyside up eggs on a camp stove... Win, Win. I really enjoy when you explain how you scout-out locations and what you look for.
Fantastic video Richard, Tasmania is an incredible place and Cradle Mountain is such a great way to start your trip. I miss it already, good thing I'll be back in July. Thanks so much for the shout out mate. I'm looking forward to following you on the rest of your adventures!
Really appreciate that Andrew. The mountain is challenging on so many levels as you already know but it certainly does draw you back. I spent 2 nights there and it still wasn't enough time.
ah richard mate no matter what the weather you still enjoy yourself and tassie looks great and i look forward to your adventures you remind me of a SUPER HERO so from now on i shall call you ASTRO MAN KEEP IT GOIN MATE i could tell it was cold but you still smiled take care cheers an beers till no 2.
What an incredible place! Thank you Richard for sharing! Seeing your videos have made me add Australia to my places I want to visit. Have a great trip. The great thing is we have non-stops flight from Dallas, Texas to Australia.
Hello Richard, To start with I respect your dedication of being there out in the cold scouting and back in the night to take brilliant photos. I enjoyed the way you have setup your commentary during your scout and quite the pictures you have taken. You are one of those who inspire me. I was there in December 2018 with me family there and aim to plan a trip just myself 😊. Keep inspiring !
Looks a beautiful place......with British style weather....(welcome to my world, lol) I have heard Tasmania is much greener than Australia. I had a book when I was young, grandfathers tiger, fictional, but describing the difference between Tasmania and Sydney quite vividly. I loved that story, but it accidentally got chucked out when we moved house in 2014. Some amazing images there Richard, your usual mastery. Oh those days pre covid
Thanks a lot for looking at this video Suzanne. I'm actually booked to go back to Tasmania in May this year. Hopefully all will still be good by then here. I'm spending 3 weeks there so lots of adventures I'm sure. It is much cooler than the mainland.
Fantastic video, some awesome scenery and some great nightscapes, despite the challenging conditions. Thanks for bringing us along, look forward to the next episode.
Thanks, Richard for sharing your adventure. Looks really challenging with this weather but you managed to get some really good photos. That's what I call a true Pro! Thumbs Up!
Glad you came to Tassy Richard, plenty of beauty here. Hope you got to Corinna and Trial Harbour on the West Coast. Sorry you had such bad weather at Cradle. Love your videos.
Thanks for watching Liz. I didn't get to those places you mention as I only had a week to get around and 2 off those days were on the Spirit of Tasmania ... so you can imagine I was on a very tight schedule.
You have the same issues I have living in BC, Canada. Wind, Snow and clouds but when its a nice sunny day or a still clear night its amazing. I always thought I had to wait for a clear night for photos but I'll go out and try with clouds as they look just as good.
Terrific images and story Richard. Experiences like this just show the time and effort that has to be put into creating vlogs and getting great shots. Looking forward to the next episode.
Thanks Richard, another great video. I was surprised to see the snow, I imagined TAsmaia was hot like Australia. Once again, you pulled some stunning images out of nowwhere. I'm looking forward to the future vids from Tas.
Hey Richard, I had the pleasure of doing a motorbike ride with 18 others quite a few years back from Brissie over the ferry and a lap around the isle. It was superb. Sadly my camera died just before the crossing and my shitty phone was just that ! Anyway I am glad I went to Tassie before the South Is of NZ otherwise I would have been disappointed, not taking anything away from Tassie. As you say you can't do much about the weather but some good shots none the less. Looking forward to more :)
Good old English weather Richard (non stop rain) you still managed to bag some great looking images so well done and looking forward to episode no 2 from Tasmania
Awesome vid, specially the first two pics, simply amazing. I have been trying to get out for some astro last week and it has been a very disappointing week or two for astro as the clouds have been covering the skies mostly. But you still managed some great shots.
Beautiful work, thanks for your Vid, I really appreciate it and the info, I look forward to following all your posts, one of the best presented CH I have seen so far. Andrew Marr and his associates also inspired myself as well in many ways, I look forward in going to Cradle Mountain when Im up to it, soon I hope.
Thanks a lot Trevor, really appreciate you watching. I like to encourage and support great Australian photographers and the other boys do such an awesome job.
A great video again. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom! You deserve much more likes and followers... Keep up the good work, greetings from Hungary!
Thanks heaps Bruce. The next 3 locations are well and truly off the beaten path .... but I just had to visit Cradle Mountain. Mind you I was all alone by myself after dark which is quite surreal in itself considering how busy and popular the place is during the daytime.
These videos are some of the most in depth video on the subject I've seen. I really appreciate the help and inspiration. Subscribed for sure. Your work is amazing and does not go unnoticed. If you haven't already, join the facebook group "nightscaper." There are some amazing shots there and i'm sure everyone would love to see your posts. The people range from amateurs to full fledged pros. Cheers!
Richard, I love your videos, I learn so much, but what I love most is your pleasant and humble attitude at all times. You are splendid to watch and an inspiration to me. It's an honor to be subscribed to your channel. I'm curious, do you have a cameraman, or pre-stage the shots as you're walking along? Keep your wonderful videos coming. I am grateful. Aloha and Mahalo from Hawai'i V O:)
Thank you so much for the great encouragement .. it means a lot. I do all the filming myself and so have to set the camera and re-shoot many times to get it right sometimes. In fact I'm considering doing a video on the filming process at some stage in the future. Appreciate you watching.
Hi! nice vid! one advice! you could try to put some map oversalys (or gps images) of where that is +-, would make it nicer for the viewer, so i dont have to go to googlemaps and check it out that way!
Hi Richard, I found your channel by chance over Christmas past, I’m now working my way through your past videos which are just great. My question is what do you use to fire your camera when you are in the shot painting with light. Best Regards Lawrence
Hi Richard, loved this video. Can you tell me what time of the year you were there please? I too am a big fan of the 3 boys, between your Tassie trip and their videos, I'm planning my 5 month photography trip through Tasmania from July 2023. Cheers Debbie
@@nightscapeimages.richard fantastic. I'm hoping I can photograph the Milky Way and Aurora Australis in the same photo (if its possible) I look forward to seeing your May videos when published.
@@samkruijver Thanks heaps Sam. It wasn't easy shooting there with snow pilling up everywhere ... but at the same time it was amazing. You been out shooting at all lately ... I've been waiting for another video from you ...!!!
Nightscape Images I’m actually in Europe on a family holiday at the moment. So I have tried to get a few shots while I can. Most will be day time touristy shots. Plus I have taken lots of video, but again it will be just a family holiday montage. No vlogging. I do miss it though. Will have to try and get back into it when I get home.
I took my car across from Melbourne via the Ferry and I drove to Cradle mountain in the middle of the night when it's open to traffic. I was there all day and able to leave the car park after 5pm.
Great little video Richard. We were over there just a few weeks ago and walked all around those areas so could relate to your trip very well. What camera did you take the video with? Am planning a photography trip back there in winter, so am hoping for plenty of snow, clear skies and aurora!
Thanks so much for the great images and inspiration. Couple of points. The first image shown, the building appears to be lit with a light from a high vantage point, with the roof shadow on the front of the building. How did you accomplish that? Also, clouds admittedly ruin a star trail. Why not just turn it into a timelapse? Thanks for your efforts.
Thanks Mike, all good points. I was actually above the level of the roof when shooting. I didn't want to leave the camera set up for too long out in the rain so a timelapse was out of the question ... although the idea is good .. the weather didn't behave itself. I did produce a few other timelapses later in the trip which I'll show in the next videos.
Rather you than me Richard, being a Queenslander I would have died in that snowstorm, I missed Cradle Mt when we were there so it was nice you showing us around. Looking forward to your next videos.
Thanks a lot Gary . .it is an amazing place.
Love Tasmania! Been there twice, Richard.
Hey Timm, yes it's a fascinating place that's for sure. I love it. Thanks for watching.
Cradle mountain is one of my favourite walking and photography places. I’ve never tried Night photography but it’s on my list

Have you had banding issues with the z6?
