Do you know why a dog whistle is also known as Galton's whistle or silent whistle?
The dog whistle was invented by Sir Francis Galton in 1876 during an experiment to test the range of frequencies that could be heard by human and various animals. That’s why it’s also known as Galton’s whistle.
Human can hear sounds in the frequency range of about 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Anything beyond 20 kHz is called ultrasound. A dog can hear sound up to 45 kHz. Therefore, a dog whistle frequency generally ranges between 23 kHz and 54 kHz. Some dog whistle also comes with ability to set it to human hearing frequency range. As a human can’t hear 23-54 kHz frequency sound, a dog whistle is also called as silent whistle.
However, fact is that there is no magical dog whistle to make them come, or to stop barking or to make barking or to calm them down. A dog whistle is just a stimulus to get dog’s attention. When you have their attention, it’s up to you or a trainer to make use of the opportunity and instruct them to do specific things using vocal command or a sign or gesture. If a dog whistle is not used properly it will become desensitized to them and they will start ignoring it and it will become ineffective.
Here I have included total 7 dog whistle sounds, some are within human hearing frequency range and some dog whistle that only dogs can hear.
There are few extremely loud dog whistle sounds. Start in low volume and then gradually increase it, when playing these high pitched dog whistle.
