- Good day and thank you for checking out the ACS Library. In today’s video we discuss Chart Symbology. The goal of this video is to leave the viewer feeling comfortable reading VFR Sectional Charts and Terminal Area Charts (TAC's).
We'll cover what a TRSA looks like, how to get airport information at a glance, where to find the proper approach frequencies, and more.
Information for today’s video was gathered from The FAA's Aeronautical Chart User's Guide.

Thank you for watching!
I wish to thank you for doing what you do. The way you summarize relevant information is superb, and these short videos greatly enhance my knowledge base. From your voice, I have the instinctive feeling that you are kind, patient, generous and intelligent. I plan to go through all your ACS videos, and then cycle back.
“Like my house here” *shows state prison* LOL
4th of July party at my place!!😉
11:19 I was writing my first comment while this played out of sight, and thought, "Kyle is brave showing where he lives on You Tube." Then when I saw it. "Oh, Kyle's a convict. Nah, he's not brave, he's got guards" :D
Haha armed guards too!
Quick and straight to the point!!!. I don’t know which one I got wrong on the exam, but I passed. Time for the check ride.
You only got ONE wrong? You're going to crush this checkride. Good luck Isaiah!!
These deserve more views! Thumbs up and subscribed. Thank you for the awesome content.
Spencer Makar I appreciate it Spencer! Thank you for taking the time to comment man. It means a lot!
Your videos are amazing! Thank you so much!
Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment Sharon! It means a lot!
Excellent video !!! Subscribed !! - Keep 'em coming please. I'm just about to dive into Instrument Training.
Thank you Lech! I am glad you’ve found them helpful! Good luck on instrument training! I think that’s some of the most fun flying I’ve done so far.
Wow about 15 minutes!!!Thanks!
It is such a good video!
Thank you XH L! I'm impressed if you were able to withstand nearly all 15 minutes haha
The ACS Library Of course! It is much easier and efficient to learn than reading the original document!Thank you for making this long and worthwhile video!
XH L Haha, glad to hear my monotone isn't as bad as those documents😂
The ACS Library hahaha not at all much much better!!!
10:03 This note can so easily sneak by you!!! Expressly on nav radio's like Localizers. It's so easy to see an underlined nav frequency and think nothing of it. It's a nav radio freq. why would it matter if it is underlined or not. I recently learned that, as a backup, ATC my try to contact you on Nav. aids. eg. radio failure. But if that freq is underlined, that won't be happening. There's an instrument written test question about that, or I wouldn't know this. And I probably would have missed that fact that Kyle just told me about it. You have been warned.
Thanks for highlighting that little underline yeah! It can be hard to spot.
I like to monitor guard on Comm2 during long XC's but hadn't thought to monitor nearby FSS instead. Another good point! Thanks Ry!
@@theacslibrary4404 Guard it 121.5 right? I don't know about monitoring FSS on a XC. As I understood it, ATC would be the ones to try to contact you on a Nav. aid frequency, I imagine only after failing to reach you on the comm freq. But I'm not confident about this like I said, I only worked this out from a wrong answer explanation to a written test question on a test prep program. Gleims pretty good by the way, can't really say how I figure they stack up to anybody else, like asa or shepard air though. I still haven't tried shepherd air.
Yes sir! 121.5. Thank you for the information man! Using Sheppard Air is like having a cheat code for the written exam. I know three people who have gotten 100's on the instrument written using it, and that exam is a bear!
@@theacslibrary4404 I got a 97! I guess that's alright, now.
97 is super good! Hopefully that leads to an easy oral exam haha
Thank you!
Do you have a reference for the VOR directions being based on the magnetic direction when the VOR was installed and never being updated? I had never heard that before, but it would explain why I feel like they never quite match up with what I think is magnetic North.
Perhaps one of the best summaries I've ever seen on reading charts, great video.
Thank you for the kind words! If you look at a sectional, you can see that every VOR is just a little off from the next one.
The only reference I’ve got for this is the Chart Supplement. Find an airport near you, and then head down to the “Radio Aids to Navigation” section. You can read the info on nearby VOR’s.
If you look at Arizona’s Page Municipal airport in the Airport/Facility Directory section of the SW US Chart Supplement, you can see info for the PGA VOR.
(L) (L) VORW/DME 117.6 PGA Chan 123 N36°55.86 ́ W111°26.85 ́ at fld. 4250/13E
That /13E at the very end shows you the variation of the VOR from True North.
There’s probably a big FAA database out there listing every VOR in the country, but I think the Chart Supplement is probably the more practical method of finding this info.
Hope it helps and good luck!
Very comprehensive
Thank you Paul!! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
I’m a little confused by airports with less than 8070 rnwy length are depicted in a circle. My sectional charts in Oregon show several airports with blue uncircled runways (like your depiction for 8070+) but they are 5,000 feet or less. Did something change since this video was made or am I misunderstanding what you are saying? For example khio or kuao
mine shows a circle around it for KHIO. Are you using foreflight? If you zoom in on foreflight it makes the circle around the airport go away.
Victor airway is 4nm wide
Yes! But to either side of the center of the airway. In total it is 8 nautical miles wide
Great! I use the area by the prison as my practice field. I often wondered if they thought I was doing recon to bust my bf out of there - lol. Now I can say, Nah! That's just Kyle's House!!! hahaha
Ride or die! haha that's awesome!😂😂
Thanks
Thank you Abualyoo! Hey the website is still speeding along. That deadline I mentioned in a previous comment you had left is still looking good. 3 weeks at the latest but I intend to have it up sooner!
@@theacslibrary4404 Thanks man to keep up. I hope it will be done before I take my checkride 😁
When's your checkride scheduled for??
@@theacslibrary4404 I have not planned when, I still want make sure I'm ready %100. Last time I wasn't and I failed. I would guess after 30 days from now.
You got this! If I don't have it ready to go in a week or two, let's get a way to contact each other and I can help out.😊
whoa KCRQ is my home airport how random
It's where I learned to fly!
I love sectionals
What is Echo floor? I didnt understand. Thank you.
thank you so much buddy ,you are the best ,completely followed your all videos for private pilot , are you gonna do ACS for instrument too , if not can you suggest any one on youtube
Hey Arsh Singh! I do plan to do Instrument, but I still have quite a ways to go before all the Private videos are done. I didn't start using RUclips until just after Instrument.
For Instrument, I used Sheppard Air to prepare for the written. It's a little pricey at $45, but it's worth every penny in my opinion! They've got the full question and answer bank. If you use Sheppard, make sure to check out the Memory Aid. It's really helpful! Here's a link to their site if you want to see more.

I found this little Study Sheet from PilotsCafe extremely helpful as well. It probably saved me a few hours of studying.
pilotscafe.com/download/IFRQuickReviewSheets.pdf
I also studied:
The Suggested Study Items listed in some of the very front few pages of the FAR/AIM.
The Instrument Flying Handbook
The Instrument Procedures Handbook
The Instrument Oral Exam Guide by Michael D. Hayes
To practice Holds, I downloaded the app called "Holding Pattern Trainer" from FLEMINGER MEDIA LLC on my iPhone. You can learn to do holds in like 15 minutes with that app. It's really nice.
Other than that, the only advice I can give is study hard and if you've got access to a simulator at a much lower rate than the plane, I'd beat that thing up! Good luck Arsh!
P.S. The holding pattern trainer app is $4.99 in the App Store I believe!
@@theacslibrary4404 thank you so much Kyle, as you suggested I downloaded the pilot Cafe and purchased the holding app and sheppard air, and thanks for a detail explanation on all the stuff for instruments will go through those books , I hope you get millions subscribers soon, you are the best when it comes to youtube ✌️😎
Arsh Singh awesome!! Hopefully you love that Pilot Cafe cheat sheet as much as I did. I probably studied that more than the FAR/AIM honestly. Thank you for the kind wishes Arsh!
@@theacslibrary4404 yeah pilot Cafe sheet is really good, have started that already thanks Kyle, as for the flying Ifr can you suggest any RUclips videos if possible
Nice House!! It's a BIG House
And guests are always welcome😉
Very helpful, thanks.
Thank you Kylan!
Another great video!
Thank you Brad!! Hey I watched some of your videos a couple days ago and was really impressed by the quality of your in-flight footage. What kind of mounts and stuff do you use? I know next to nothing about film and would be happy for any advice you’ve got!
