    Yes! This brings me back to my theory that Hollywood really doesn't find curly girls worthy. Think back to most shows and movies. Most curly girls are either relegated to best friend status or the "other woman." Starship Troopers is the absolute best textbook example of this, but there have been plenty of them.

      I think you just became my husband’s favorite person for giving me a valid reason to watch Starship Troopers 😂 and YES that is such a salient observation!

    Some movies from the early 2000s that helped me embrace my curls were A Walk to Remember, Van Helsing, & Phantom of the Opera.

    Great discussion! Couldn't agree more. I hadn't thought about this movie in years, and then I was at work recently (I'm an ESL teacher in Asia) and a student saw me and said "You look like Mia before she was a princess!" I was so flabbergasted, didn't know what to say. What an insult, I spend hours every week to care for my 3b curls, yet in another person's eyes they look like the brushed out bushy curls in the Princess Diaries??? There's a lot of work we need to do to educate people about curly hair...

    The Spanish Netflix show Elite actually showed a rare transformation scene to reveal a character with gorgeous curls. I was surprised and pleased about that. (Though she compromises on her religious values a bit...).

    Have you ever read Jane Eyre? She was forced to brush her hair until it was straight. It's some weird ass old rule to the way hair should be "done"
    In fact either my mom did it to me as a child or magic happened when I was 13 and got a perm and finally had curls (Mariah inspired), and they never grew out.

    • @TheFitCurls
      @TheFitCurls  3 года назад +2

      Oh my gosh I had forgotten about that detail in Jane Eyre!! I just tried to cut mine off so it would grow back straight 🤦🏼‍♀️

      @@TheFitCurls yeah when I read it I was thinking, okayyy i get if you were poor and couldn't afford the oils or whatever in olden days existed to help curls, but jeez. They don't make you ugly at all. I've worn my hair curly since I got that perm so it's finally refreshing to see others (not around me though) that finally accept their hair instead of straightening.

      Saaaame! I used to brush my hair 2-3 times a day, put oils in it to sleek it and minimize the frizz🙄 WRONG, than attempt to put it in a tight bun, would take long to dry, but on day 3 I’ll have nice waves🙂 like a slight curve to my hair. But by that time also, next day I HAVE to wash it, cause it’s getting too oily for my mom to handle. And I thought I had straight hair but very frizzy😂 but also if I need to straighten it I need to blow dry it straight first. Doesn’t make sense! I know! Just realized that! After seeing my 2 yr old 3b curls. Her father is German white so I think she got my genes... tho I am more 2c.

    This was SO much fun to watch! I didn't want it to be over😩. A great big YES to wanting to see more reactions. I can't think of any movies right off the bat but when I do I will certainly let you know. PS: I've read Jane Eyre many times and have seen the movie but I can't remember the part about her hair.....I will have to go back and re read / watch. I bet I was focused on other parts of the novel and just missed it.

    Hmmm, you're almost there.
    Please consider that curly, kinky, coily, nappy hair doesn't need to be *subdued*.
    Her hair broke a brush-that's health and strength and those things are beautiful.

    • @TheFitCurls
      @TheFitCurls  3 года назад +2

      Having just watched this entire video again to make sure I never said that...I never said her hair should be subdued. And I never would. My whole point was that Mia’s naturally curly hair should NOT have been subdued through chemical relaxing, but could’ve been shaped and styled in a more flattering way to show how gorgeous curls are!

    • @SanFranDentist94301
      @SanFranDentist94301 3 года назад

      @@TheFitCurls Shaped and styled=subdued.
      If she literally wants to wash and go that's fine!

    • @TheFitCurls
      @TheFitCurls  3 года назад +8

      @@SanFranDentist94301 I understand your inference but that was never my implication. The movie’s point was that her hair was ugly until it was straight. Of course her own choice of a low-maintenance routine was fine, as it was her choice. But in insisting on including (yet modifying) the makeover scene from the books, the production team decided to show straight hair as the beautiful option, rather than showcasing her natural texture and styling it to flatter her existing features.
      I HAVE hair that does what Mia’s does if I do not shape and style it, and much like Mia, for many years I thought “well this is as good as it’s gonna get.” (Direct Mia quote from the film) And that was because NO ONE TAUGHT ME how to style my hair in a way that showed my curls to advantage! Paolo could’ve given Mia a leave-in and a curl cream and said “rake these in at the end of your shower, then scrunch and go” and it still would’ve given her a low maintenance routine. He didn’t. And that taught those of us with curly hair that we looked like sh*t and had to have straight hair to be pretty.
      This entire video is made to DEBUNK that assumption. Curls are gorgeous however they grow out of the skull. They don’t need to be straightened or “subdued” out of existence. What every curly human does from there is their choice. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk 😂

    • @omnipotentfaces1514
      @omnipotentfaces1514 Год назад

      @@SanFranDentist94301using products to style it means to ENHANCE natural curls. The point of the scene is to go from casual teen to a polished looking princess, not curly to straight, but unkempt teen to defined styled and cared for. Mias curly hair is stunning but having a more natural, wilder hair (like her freespirit mother) doesn’t work thematically.
      Note the makeover would have worked if the film ended with her having styled curled and feeling comfortable in herself - between her childhood/wild mothers look and the straight hair when she was trying to be her grandmothers version of perfect. Also in movie 2 defo should be curly!
