I don't know if this might help you but thought I'd let you know this. I've been trained and have been in the hvac/r and electrical fields since 1987 and the way we find the common, run and start are by checking ohms. The highest ohm reading is always between the start and run windings, the lowest ohms is between common and run windings . If you want to check what kind of shape the windings are in then After getting all these ohms readings if you add the 2 lowest ohms together they should equal the highest ohms reading. If they don't equal out then there's a problem in the motor windings that may cause a failure very soon. This way is used in checking a compressor on a heating/cooling unit but should also work on motors since the compressor is just a motor also. Take care

where is the capacitor in the first induction motor in this video? is it built into the motor? I have a DPH224L01 I pulled out of an electric dryer, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to reverse its direction. Does the capacitor have anything to do with changing the direction? I feel like I have tried to switch all of the leads, but its spins the same way.

I bought a bunch of motors at an estate auction. Three washing machine motors, a couple beefy old induction motors with capacitor on top, a big 220v motor, one with a gear reduction, and a big variac that they thought was a motor. All that went as one lot that no one else bid on, so I got it for $1.

Thanks, Jeremy, for answering my question of 2 days ago and going to the trouble of adding the link. Sadly it is of no help, it being a much larger capacitor start motor, (mine has no capacitor) and also it has the wires all accessible externally. 220 or 110v - the procedure would be exactly the same, I imagine.
Thanks again for trying, but I'm now resigned to further searching to try to find the way to get this motor reversed. Maybe I'll dismantle the motor and mess about with the field coil wires inside......

Jeremy, Love your channel and I greatly admire your work.
I have a situation which I suspect a significant portion of your subscribers may find themselves in.
Long story short, I bought a lathe to use in my garage. I converted the 3-phase motor to run on single phase 220 volt power using a Static Phase Controller. It works great but only in one direction. However, the 3-position drum switch no longer works. When I start it, the motor (and chuck) only rotates in one direction. The drum switch doesn't change anything.
I have found online wiring diagrams on converting 3-phase motors to single phase 220 volts. I have found wiring diagrams for drum reversing switch's on single and 3-phase motors. But I have not come across the wiring diagram for my particular situation.
Other details that may help you.
    1. SPC: Phase-A-Matic PAM-300HD static phase converter.
    2. Motor: Century brand Squirrel-Cage Induction Polyphase Motor (1.5 HP, model number SC-184-FC4-7).
    3. Drum switch: 3-position, Cutler-Hammer Forward-Off-Reverse lever-operated switch.
    4. Startup switch: A circuit box equipped with a green start button and a red emergency shutoff switch.
    5. Magnetic Starter: GE CR306 Magnetic Starter (NEMA size 00)
Let me know if this is something you would like to address.
    Sincerely,
    Bill

Flipping the wires on start winding changes the direction of the induction motor. Correct.
What is the reason for it, it is AC, current goes back and forth. That is the point that should be the main focus. Don't you think?

    • @Jeremy_Fielding
      @Jeremy_Fielding  4 года назад +1

No... because one is a practical question (the goal of the video) the other is a theory question... why it works. The goal was to solve a problem not explain the science. However, I have made a series of videos explaining things like that... How motors work for beginners. The answer you seek is in there.

    • @alchemy1
      @alchemy1 4 года назад +1

@@Jeremy_Fielding I want to make sure you didn't take my inquiry as criticism or the wrong way. I love everything you do. You are one of the real no bull people that I have stumbled on.
After I inquired as to why the answer popped in my head or I think it did anyway. I was going to Quora to ask that but I haven't yet. Assuming the answer is right it looked like this:
The power we get is what they called split-phase. Current electricity alternates between two black hot wires in the house. The white wire is in the middle of the transformer coil
So current at any given time always moving from the black wire through the load first. The current, magnetic field, force, right-hand rule, torque direction. There is ever a slight delay from the white wire towards the black wire. Wiring the capacitor one way, it is discharged, current surges from the black to the white, clockwise perhaps. Wiring the other way it is discharged from the white wire to the black, counterclockwise.
      But I could be wrong.
The natural follow up question would be, can one make a dryer motor and shaded pole motor change direction, as they have no capacitor? or more precisely be bi-directional? If what I said in my explanation above is correct then the answer is no. Unless you build them with two sets of windings one for each direction.

Apologies -- this is the FIRST of all your videos I have seen (viewed 01-31-2023....). Totally unrelated question: if I have a large treadmill motor that is air-cooled directly with shaft-mounted fan (fan designed for counter-clockwise rotation, blowing air on to / into the motor), how can I find a fan that will cool the motor in clockwise rotation? Original fan is unidirectional airflow due to curved surface of fan blades (do even if you flip-mount the fan -- clockwise still blows air AWAY from the motor...). I have called and searched online....can't find a 4.25" diameter fan with 7/16" shaft center-hole, and fan blades angled to blow air on to the motor via clockwise rotation..... Do you know of any parts collectors / dealers / suppliers who might have such a fan? OR -- will I need to mount a separate, electrically powered fan to blow air into the motor....? (Yes: this is one of those treadmill-as-DC-power-generator projects....) If you ever see this question and have time -- thanks! Thanks again for all your videos sharing your knowledge.

Thank you for this explanation of how to reverse the direction of motors. I didn't even know for sure if it was possible without rewiring the motor. I made a mount for a motor onto a meat grinder. Once it was all hooked up, the grinder spun the wrong way. 😢 I didn't want to re-mount the motor to where it would be hanging off the back. My motor says on the tag to switch the red and black wires to change CW/CCW. Easy! Thanks

I have a basic stand-up house fan that quit working. I believe it's an induction motor based on your other video (it's basically the same fan you had, the "sacrificial" one, lol). I changed the capacitor, and had it working but snapped some of the little wires from the windings and have no idea where they go. I don't understand why they design it this way with such fragile, tiny wires. I can't sleep without my fan. Does anybody have any tips to help me get this bad boy running again? Even a way to just rig it up with one speed?? Please help! If not, Jeremy will be exposed as a fraud, and I don't want that. Also, if I can't sleep at night due to not having my fan, I could potentially have a fatal car accident. Leaving not only my own blood, but also the blood of every innocent victim I take out with me all over the hands of Jeremy Fielding and every knowledgeable gentleman reading this comment and unfortunately damning your soul to burn in the eternal pits of hell. So let's help each other out and get this fan running again so we can make it to heaven guys. Thanks in advance! Your friend

Unfortunately I haven't tried to wire a 240 volt motor. I don't have 240 power in my shop and I am not sure how to do it. The process should be the same... as far as reversing the start winding... but I haven't actually done it myself so I am afraid to recommend specific steps. You, sir, have a very pleasant voice :D I subbed after 10 seconds. Found your channel while looking for a way to reverse the direction of an electrical motor. In short I am left handed. And so I am trying to build my own table saw. That means that I have to reverse the direction of the circular saw motor I am using. And I am totally clueless when it comes to electrics. I guess I have to watch more of your videos. lol.
If you have the inclination, stop by my tiny channel and show some support. Cheers from Norway.

Thank you for your instruction. I know nothing about A/C motors, but I've come across a large industrial fan. Some DYI person added a one phase motor to it. Looks like an old dryer motor (like the gray one on your left). The motor runs in the wrong direction and blows air out the back. I tried reversing the fan, but it worked the same. I'll take the motor off and try your suggestions. Thanks again.

So, lets see. You don't dumpster dive but you find these motors on the side of the road. You mean people put out a washing maching at the curb along with the rest of the garbage and you put the washing machine in your truck and take it home/shop to disasemble.

Exactly...I don’t shop behind stores or anything like that. If I happen to see a large appliance on
the curb while going to work, and it’s easy to get, I grab it on the way home.

Everytime... the ones with the concrete blocks in the bottom aren't that friendly, but at that point I feel committed. The blocks help keep them from tipping over. Now that I think about it, the newer ones don't usually have the weight in the bottom. When I get home I have a hand truck for moving it to the shop. Then its right back to the road. I hating having any scrap metal in the yard.

I find most of the motors, that I have, from dishwashers and washing machines. I schlep the appliance home, scavenge clamps, metal, wire and motor, then set it to the curb again. Usually it's gone in a day or two as metal Scrappers routinely patrol my hood for scrap. I am in Mississauga, Canada.

I mainly pickup old TVs and microwaves for the transformers. I don't see things with motors too often, I am in a city though so scrap goes quick.

Awesome video! I have a question. Would there be a way to have the motor reverse automatically say by something breaking a beam for like a garage door opener? Pretty much I’m looking to make something move back and forth on a track on its own. Thanks
