Splinter being in the room and recognizing shredder made me feel strange because omg, in rottmnt it was sad shredder sent karai to the other plane of existence so how would this splinter feel seeing that. I'm super excited for this reaction.

Technically, Leon isn't egotistical, he just acts like he's the best to cover up his major insecurities :>
leo actually just has a massive inferiority complex, which makes him express himself as "egotistical", by going off-plan and doing his own thing to prove to his family that he CAN be trusted to do things on his own, but all they see is the "going off-plan", a great example of this is that one episode where leo and splinter fight the kraken
