As a fellow South Asian, who like the guest stands out in Japan, it was really nice to hear my experiences validated! A lot of foreigners have different experiences with racism in Japan. I agree that if you're a visible minority that is not east-asian you will have a much harder time than in places like America or Canada. The discrimination exists, they are just a lot less overt with it in Japan
If you have experience as an IT engineer in the United States, you can earn 1.2 million yen per month in Japan. However, you should be aware that you could earn $30,000 per month in the United States. As a result, immigrant IT engineers from Asian countries who have experienced racial discrimination in the U.S. are now working actively in Japan. Still, this case represents the highest elite class among foreign workers in Japan. The rest of the foreign workers receive less than 100,000 yen per month, or at most 300,000 yen even if they are well-paid.
I'm an Aerospace Engineering major whose done internships with NASA. Do you think I could get into IT and make that much in Japan, once I graduate? I've even considered going to graduate school there but I'm still on the fence.
@@zack2804 Why would a smart person who participated in a NASA internship and studied for a bachelor's degree in the US choose to go to Japan to work as an IT engineer? Even with just a bachelor's degree, it's quite possible to get a good IT engineer position in California, Texas, or New York
@@Jay-fl5bz Because I have my own preferences? I don't want to work in any of those states. Do you even realize how expensive they are? Or how much crime there is? This country is unlivable, even as an engineer. I'll consider coming back when I'm done travelling the world.
You should study Japanese for two years and come to Japan to work for two years of fun and relief from the increasing madness of western countries, and then decide whether to go back. If you can't set ambitious goals for Japan at least set a cut off. Otherwise if you stay here for longer, get used to life stabilizing into a comfortable treadmill.
When the restaurant owner puts up a big X with his arms, at least he should sing: endless rain, fall on my heart, let me forget all of the hate, all of the sadness
Hi, I’m also a software engineer in Tokyo. I just came across this video by chance, and I think it’s one of the best videos about what it’s like to be a swe here. As someone from SEA, I’ve experienced way less discrimination than mentioned in this video. However, I have many non-white and non-East Asian friends and colleagues, so I’ve always wondered what their Japan experience is like, but never really had the opportunity to ask. About salary, I totally agree that it’s really low here. Some of my uni friends who work in my home country earn even more than me, despite the living cost there being a third of what it is in Japan. Even if you work for an American tech company in Japan, you will still receive much less pay than your colleagues in the US. Personally, I think spending 1-2 years here is the sweet spot. I’m already in my 5th year, and many times, I felt that I’ve run out of what I’d like to try doing 😂.
Asia is definitely a lot about white color. White westerners living there, usually share stories about getting compliments for their white skin that they never hear at home.
Yeah but it's definitely not due to colonialism and white supremecy. Pale skin has always been desirable in ancient China, Japan, Korea long before the US or even the UK even became a developed nation.
As far as him being rejected from a restaurant it was likely a local only spot where the owner simply rejects anyone who they are not friends with. These are often run by an old person to hang out with friends. This is why I always check reviews before picking out a place to go.
