    My double bass is on the way! Loving your content. Any thoughts on “Essential Elements for Strings with EEi - Book 1 - Double Bass”?
    No teachers anywhere near me, so I’ll be going at it alone until I can travel for lessons.

      Thanks for the kind words! Essential Elements is a classic. It’s very well-executed. It’s designed for a classroom of string players, so you can “move faster” with a bass-specific method, but it will give you a good foundation to start.

      @@doublebasshq I think I'll start there and move on to the Simandl Method. The response from some beginners to Simandl's book 1 seems like it might not be the best approach for someone learning by themselves.
      If I had a teacher nearby, I'd definitely opt for that.
      ty for all you do!

    Hi I love the video, I have a really important double bass audition tommorow, do you happen to have any more tips on slurs or just bowing, i watched your other videos about that and it was super helpful!

    • @doublebasshq
      @doublebasshq  Год назад +1

      I find that thinking about the bigger muscles like the ones in your back help to get weight into the bow. I find that warming up with simple slurs every day helps to make them more automatic. Good luck on your audition tomorrow!

    I'm always torn on cleaning the top of my bass. I know I should, but I also play in a modern Improv group. One of the tricks uo my sleeve is to rub the top with my fingers. The rosin helps my fingers to stick and get tone. It's shameful, I know, but it also sounds very cool.

      Ha! I shot a bunch of different angles and tried to lip-sync with my “song.” At least one of the takes kind of lined up with the worlds, so I cut between them. 😁

    For the bridge, try cleaner plus 0000 steel wool.

    Hey Thank you fore the tutorial!
    I just wanted to know if you could make a tutorial showing how to fix an issue with my bass since i had to reinstall the bridge and now pizzicato and thumb position is basically impossible. I just wanted to know if there were any suggestions on how to fix this. Thank you!

    • @doublebasshq
      @doublebasshq  Год назад

      The bridge can be tricky. I’d recommend taking it into a shop. It’s likely that it’s not in the same position as it was originally.

    Xylene is a medical clearing agent used for surgical tools and I THINK that it is part of the ingredients of most instrument cleaners. You can buy it at a medical supply without prescription and it's much cheaper!!!
    It's also very good (Xylene) for cleaning the resin off the hair on the bow...as unlike alcohol, it doesn't leave a residue. BUT Jason!...the BRIDGE....that's beyond cleaning...take it to a meat grinder..or perhaps a power sander? hopeless. But alway fun and informative to spend 5 minutes with Jason Heath and his dog---not afraid of getting down and dirty ! Waiting for the RAP however! Bravo Jason!.

    Really fine steel wool also works. Just wipe really lightly.

    Use the Kolstein in a well ventilated area or you’ll float away. Also, store the bottles upright as the caps don’t always seal well and leak over time.

    Thank you for the inspiration because I am super bad about cleaning my bass. The guy who stands next to me in orchestra is always razzing me about it.

    Did you end up using the polish after the cleaning solution?

    • @doublebasshq
      @doublebasshq  Год назад

      I have in the past, but I decided to just do the cleaners this time. Back when I was younger, I used to be pretty good about cleaning and polishing, but I got out of the habit when I bought my current bass. I think the rosin build-up isn’t as obvious on this bass.

    I use Xylene. It takes off the rosin and will not ruin your finish.

    Here’s an idea…clean it every/most of the time before and after you play with a soft cloth and you won’t need to spend money on toxic stuff!

    The skits are cringe-worthy imo. Also are you on the take from companies? You probably should let your viewers know so they can take your opinions less seriously while you’re talking about their products.
