Mana and Kozi play the role of star-crossed lovers (the lady and the sad clown) who were parted by the entertainingly cruel Death (Gackt). When I watched this as a teenager all those years go, I didn't understand the clip at all, but I still loved the song. Now, as an adult, I can proudly say I still don't understand the clip at all.
I actually did research and i came up with a theory to summarize all the information. The Song: The lyrics of this song tell a story of two dolls coming to life and dancing the night away. This comes from the belief (I think it’s Buddist but don’t quote me on this) that a doll can hold the soul of a person until they are ready to leave the Earth and move into the afterlife/reincarnation. Knowing this makes the song come across bitter sweet as the true meaning of the song is to tell the story of a couples last night on Earth before they are reincarnated into the next life. Video Style: It is very clear in the video that Gackt represents Death (or the Grim reaper if you prefer) waiting to help the souls move on from earth, matched with the lyrics it is Death who has given the dolls this last night together. The rest of the band all represent dolls holding the souls of the living and I find it all so beautifully sad that I can watch this video over and over again, the repetitive lyrics really bringing home the meaning behind the song. ・Background This song was originally created for the live tour "STANDING TOUR '97 Pays de merveilles ~In the Blank Moment~" held in the summer of 1997. The set list had already been decided, but Gackt requested that "we want one more song." The members' costumes on this occasion were based on the characters in the lyrics, with Mana as Doll 1 (a girl doll), Közi as Doll 2 (a clown doll), Kami as an aristocrat, and Yu~ki as servants. ・Music Közi was created as a statement that "this song is for guitarists Közi and Mana to perform in a performance without playing guitar at the front," and "this song is not a song to play the guitar." In fact, there is only one acoustic guitar part in a very small part of the song. The coupling song "Moonflower Nocturne de l'image" was positioned as "If Moonflower was visualized, this kind of sound would be playing in the background." ・Recording Közi composed the song on the piano, but since he couldn't play it as beautifully as Gackt, he created it little by little while pressing the keys with one finger. @William Jones his early works were good. Miserable is still my favorite to this day. I can see why he went solo though. He wouldn't get as much creative freedom had he stayed in Malice Mizer.

Valfreya F Hands down Gackt, he has the best technique and skill in singing of all of them, but I do love Klaha's voice in the lower notes, it sounds so cool! I love a lot of songs, but my very favourite must be Gardenia, Garnet, Au Revoir and Bel Air.

This song was originally created for the live tour "STANDING TOUR '97 Pays de merveilles ~In the Blank Moment~" held in the summer of 1997. The set list had already been decided, but Gackt requested that "we want one more song."
The members' costumes on this occasion were based on the characters in the lyrics, with Mana as Doll 1 (a girl doll), Közi as Doll 2 (a clown doll), Kami as an aristocrat, and Yu~ki as servants.
・Music
Közi was created as a statement that "this song is for guitarists Közi and Mana to perform in a performance without playing guitar at the front," and "this song is not a song to play the guitar." In fact, there is only one acoustic guitar part in a very small part of the song.
The coupling song "Moonflower Nocturne de l'image" was positioned as "If Moonflower was visualized, this kind of sound would be playing in the background."
・Recording
Közi composed the song on the piano, but since he couldn't play it as beautifully as Gackt, he created it little by little while pressing the keys with one finger.
He started writing the lyrics five days before the tour started. The theme was "The story of a girl who was once human and a clown doll," and while it was a Grimm fairy tale that children would enjoy, he was conscious of the structure including a very cruel and social episode behind the scenes.
The arrangement was flat at the live tour stage, but for recording, a part that modulates in the second half of the song was added.
The programming was mainly done by the composer Közi.
When adding live accordion, Közi requested that "I definitely want that person to do it," and asked accordionist coba. Coba had a tight schedule and had to leave for Europe the day after the song was scheduled to be recorded, so Gackt asked for it, and they recorded it intensively in a one-off performance after Coba had heard the song.
・Music video
It was filmed on location in two Western-style buildings in Hakone and Saitama.
In Hakone, there was a massive snowfall of 2 meters, and the entrance on the first floor of the building was buried, so people had to go in and out from the second floor.
Gackt said that snow was an inconsequential element, and it didn't really matter if it was there or not.

Back when Gackt was amazing, I felt he really shined his brightest in Malice Mizer.
Meh...don't feel to bad for him. I mean he really really made it big doing a solo career after all.
@William Jones his early works were good. Miserable is still my favorite to this day. I can see why he went solo though. He wouldn't get as much creative freedom had he stayed in Malice Mizer.
