July 18, in ontario, Canada, I do not even have my first cucumber or peper or tomatoes, my fault for starting seedlings inside and warm weather came in only after first week of june.
Hello. I'm way down here in NJ, zone 7a, and that cold snap in May was brutal here also. Then it was followed by an unusually very hot June. The plants didn't know what to do with themselves! I had just put my plants in in the beginning of May, and all were stunted. Took a long time to mature, only just got my first Roma tomato ripe yesterday. Peppers have begun to grow, but none except the sweet banana peppers a ready to be picked. My cherry tomato plants have given me a few fruits. Yesterday was the first day in a brutal heat wave that is predicted to last 8 days. Are you guys having trouble with heat now? I put shade cloth over as much of my little garden as I could. I may lose my zucchini, yellow squash, and beloved eggplants. I wish you luck with your gardens!
Hi Gary, just transplanted my fall/winter cabbages, planted kale, collards, and round summer squash that can also double as a winter squash with a medium storage time. I'm inspired to plant more cukes! Thankyou. God bless.

They have been in the ground since memorial day an I started them before that inside. Well out of the 4 only 1 has been producing cucumbers. I noticed another one is getting its first one finally but no sign of female flowers yet on the other 2 & I check them throughly everyday. No problem pollinating since i do it by hand. Good to know there’s potential to plant more seeds/seedlings this close to August. Good tip on spacing for birds. Would a more direct watering from a narrow spout near the seeds/seedling be a better way to conserve water and help root systems-rather than a wider spray?

I'm in zone 7a. I started my yellow squash and zucchini inside, planted outside beginning of May. Then we had a long cold snap in May, we had five storms in 4 days the first week of June (two on day one were "tornadic" and wrecked my roof). Then June was unusually extremely hot. My plants finally began to thrive after being stunted from all that. But I have yet to get a single mature yellow squash or zucchini. I'm picking the Ichiban eggplants young, so as not to invite any more trouble than we've already had. Now a massive heat wave. I'm exhausted. I don't think I have the physical and emotional energy to replant now, and again nurture and worry about new plants. I hope there are no more extreme weather phenomena after this heat wave. Whatever survives this is what I'll keep going. I'll try again next year, with an eye toward mid-season planting like you're doing now. Thank you for showing us that mid season plantings can thrive and make a happy fall.
Wow on the roof. Try and just tuck in a few seeds somewhere. Maybe take 15 minutes. Over seed in places and come. You will get something. Good luck. I usually lose my steam about now. Hi Gary - I planted zucchini and crookneck squash but unfortunately, I think some squash borers got to them (they wilted overnight and I found 1 borer inside my zucchini but never inside the stem of the plant). In any case, they are both dead now so I will be pulling them out. Do you think its a bad idea to replant new squash/zucchini in the same place? I've heard that you shouldn't plant zucchini in the same place the FOLLOWING year in case eggs hibernated in the soiled, but how about in the same growing season? I have limited space so I don't really have anywhere else to put new zucc. Thanks for your help and all your videos! They are super helpful.

What was the purpose of watering the entire mound, as opposed to just the area where the seeds were sown? I'm a lifelong Californian, and drought is always an issue, so watching him waste water like that was painful to watch. Even as those plants each maturity, there's no reason to water 3-4 feet away from the main plant.
Well Im on well water. But if you just water the seeds, the dry soil around it wicks the water away. Watering the mound and mulching keeps everything moist. And the roots run 3 or 4 feet. Granted yes they are seeds now but you know what I mean. They never go away, and they are always hungry. Losing plants daily here in central Texas
Great strategy.

How do you keep the squash borers away? Also, do you have a strategy for leaf cutter beetles?
I do dust my stems but this year I did it 1x. The previous video I did talked about birds and good insects. They are helping a lot.

Will be starting my mid-season crops next week. Zone 8a - doesn't freeze until mid/late November.
Hey mate
What’s the dry fertiliser you use ?? And some other examples also of possible/ what do you wanna feed all these guys with please??
Thats just called Plant Tone form Espoma. They are all pretty much the same. Any granular organic with NPK close to a 5-5-5 works. I just buy whats on sale. Last month I was using Chicken Manure pelleted.

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) great. Thankyou mate. Great vid!!
I would and put insect dust on stem. If they are around they are around. They find the plants.

What zone do you garden in?
Love you channel. I garden in NOVA. With this unbearable heat wave we are having - I feel I need to water my zucchini plants (in ground), the tomatillos (in container) and my raised bed everyday. The zucchini & tomatillo suffer heat wilt if I don’t. Am I watering too much??
Everyday is good and it will matter. You cant over water in this heat

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) Thank you for responding. Much appreciated.

I think it is.

What zone are you gardening in? I'm in zone 6, was wondering if this applies in my area.
Gary is in zone 7.
it depends on your last frost date. Google your zip code or nearest city and "last frost date" and it'll tell you. If you have 90 more days, as I do, there is time for a lot more crops. : )
What fertilizer did you use?
I just use that every organic granular that is on sale that has NPK around a 5-5-5

My squash leaves are massive and tall - am I supposed to do something to them or just let them be? My goodness, I am so new to this - in fact, this is the first year I've ever planted.
A healthy squash... it's a thing of beauty. Mine are patty pan squash and they are getting bigger than I expected before turning yellow. Yikes!
I planted my corn and a few beans right underneath a crookneck squash and those plants look way healthier than the others out in the open
You can let them go. Take notes if diseases come, when bug show up. The dates help for planting. But for now... let it grow and see how you do. Good luck.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you! I am relieved!
How do you keep the squash bugs out of your garden?
I ask them to leave. I wish. You dont but you try and manage them down. Sprays, birds, beneficial insects is what I use.

I have patty pan and yellow crookneck so I pray that the squash vine borers are gone for there season they destroyed my early summer crop if not I refuse to grow them again!!
Ur kale looks like my cauliflower and brocolli. I cannot get rid of those dang bugs.
Can you still do this up in zone 3?
These take about 45 days to mature. So if you have that much time yes. To be realistic you'll need 60 days of no frost.
