End of the video had me teary eyed man. I'm a straight shank guy for now lol... but I'm definitely a st Jude's guy and that's something we can all agree on in a time where nobody seems to agree on anything. Great video as always
Monthly contributor for several years. On a fishing note I had no luck with straight shank or round bend straight shank, back to all EWG's for all my plastics.
I switched to straight shanks 3 yrs ago and like you lose more fish than I ever did with an EWG. Switched back to EWG last season and will stay there. Glad to know it wasn’t just me.
I think the biggest problem with straight-shank hooks is too small of a hook for the plastic being used, and most importantly, stretching the plastic to insert the hook - the plastic under tension prevents the hook from going all the way through, with the result that the barb doesn't penetrate. You're trying to land them on the hook point. Based on my experience. Don't stretch the plastic as you insert the pointy end, hook it further back. And make a channel for the hook. You will hook every one. And don't set the hook like a girly man. If you set it like a real man (or real woman), that hook will come out right behind the upper jaw. EWG is okay if it's a manly hook like the Haymaker. 😁
Thanks Miles. Those Hayabusa 959 hooks are on sale right now at Tackle Warehouse. Great deal! Thanks for the info as always.
I like flipping while fishing reeds. Flipping that type of cover works better for me than anything else.

So with the EWG do you use a sweeping hookset?
Do anglers still “flip” today? I see anglers on lakes pitching but don’t see many if any actually flipping.
What knot you using?
I use EGW and I've had better results!
I do agree what you are saying to me about a special book🪝
