I'm playing both modern and classic. Age of Empires is a RTS that i enjoy immensely especially on moderate, hard and hardest difficulty, it provides real massive challenge, i'm not an expert however i derive enjoyment therefrom.

There is something I dont understand. Is there any good reason why you didnt place your towers as near as possible the wall? To me it looks more efficent to place them right behind the wall and increase their sight. So if any catapults appear they still can reach and destroy them.
Walls shouldn't be to stop them, but to bring them in the way you want. It's just a wall, protecting it is useless.i normally create an opening for them and keep my all archers and watch towers to kill them on the way.
it depends on the map, the reasons not to build near the walls 1) elephants and cats damage towers, when they attack the walls. 2) Siege weapons usually has a priority to attack towers first, not the walls, so doesn't matter that much

I've heard from a friend that it may be more effective to just build ballista/helipolis instead of catapults for your armies siege needs. If you get engaged outside the enemy's base a catapult has a tendency to hit your own people and if you pull them back during the fight you lose the potential damage of two units as opposed to ballista which can continue to fight without such problems. He recommends taking about 6-8 ballista with the army. What do you think of this strategy?

He didn't get defeated. He just resigned because his advantage was so large that there's no meaning to continue. He actually won the battle.
The AI always plays better and more aggressively on maps that have little to no water. Which is why "highlands" has in my opinion the toughest AI.

It is Awesome weapon but Helipolis can suffer fron Catapults...So I usually combine them with Scythe Chariots. Almost perfect army.
I even let a group of villager attack catapults :v
