Had thousands of takeoff and landings both days and nights of this island where my mother was born. Thanks for the memories!
Me encantooo,bellooo el video.
Back in 1983, my first Instructor said to me; "We are Not supposed to take Students to Culebra Airport" (Not allowed by the school) Then he said to me :; But, If you Land on this Airport the proper way; You will be ready to Land "anywhere". So we proceeded. He tought me well, It took 3 "turn arounds" but landed the plane on my 4th attempt. ( The first Time) After that.....well I will let you figured it Out. I soloed on my 8th hour. Great Instructor..!! Today 2018 still flying ......"What a RUSH"..!!
ah back in the glory days of no rules!
WOW! FANTASTIC!
That was fantastic! Thanks for making this video. 🛩️
Your video kept shaking and I was not happy about it as I love the Britten Norman Islander Planes. Can you please do a better shoot without any wind sounds, shaking, passing vehicles in the background, even though the quality of the video is excellent. Looking forward for more videos and thanks.
El que tomó la película parece que tiene PARQuINSON
Anybody here because of Netflix “Legend of Cocaine Island?”
"He basically slid the plane left to right onto the centerline inches above the ground!! Awesome!" Edd Die, that is exactly how I was taught to land there, slip that mother all the way to the numbers, then remove flaps and flair at the same time
Thanks for this excellent video. I'm one of the nephews of Benjamin Rivera Noriega for whom the airport was dedicated after his tragic death. He lived on and loved Culebra. He flew many passengers in and out of this precious island. He was a hero to me and your video brings back many good memories. He was captain of one of the islander aircraft you caught in your video.
Nice to practice that "Turning Short Final" maneuver.
I love that approach and the Inside Pattern at Isla Grande. They and the constant Tradewinds made me a much better pilot. I finished my CPL training in 2003 in USA. They got impressed with my PR training. When I showed them these Turning Short Finals with a crosswind landing-touching down on the inside tire first. The Culebra Approach became famous in my field in illinois. Specially done SIG 600 feet TPA style. They even wanted me to do them at the local Air Show. Keep up that good PR training. Those low maneuvers turns are great practice- and makes better pilots..along with the SIG Inside pattern Short and steep Approaches.
Note; That Cessnatised pilot at end can't land with a Crosswind? He even touched down on the tailwind tire, A Cessna Clod? Is that an American visiting Porto Rico? Most Americans cant do safe Crosswind Landings due they are not taught well in most USA Schools. Im part Puerto Rican and I had to teach real 17 knot crosswind landings to many in USA. They are so dam afraid of them...In PR is always windy..You get used to strong winds..
outwiththem Just a few days ago, I departed Culebra on an Air Flamenco Islander, and we lost starboard engine about three miles out and 2000' ASL. Captain Frank Ruiz expertly circled it around and managed the yaw perfectly while setting us back down nice and soft. Us gringos were VERY grateful for the unique training and experience you described!
outwiththem Also, while I was on the island, I saw a VAL Islander (probably empty of passengers and cargo) perform what I have heard fighter pilots call a "max performance takeoff"....very impressive.
Those Islanders cannot fly well on one engine, specially when cabin loaded. Glad you made it well. and thanks to Frank. I bet he feels like a better pilot now. Those emergencies are demanding and teach you so much.

GOD Bless al Pilots on Earth!
Greetings from Douglas, Arizona 🇵🇷🌵🌴🌵🌴🌵🌴🌵🌴🌵🌴🇵🇷
I am glad they named the airport after him cause he deserved it.His death was very tragic and traumatic for my parents who loved him dearly. He was a sweetheart and such a good humanitarian,he would fly us to culebra and in our way he would let me gear the plane. He promised he would teach me how to fly and he would encourage me to become a pilot,I should of fallow his foot steps and become one.He was such a great person,I miss my uncle Benji.
I met a fellow pilot called Benjamiin SIG. Later on I saw him flying Islanders from PR to the smaller islands. We took a course together at SIG in the 1970's and became friends there. I used to fly w him to the Islands.
What happened to Benjamin? Please someone respond.
También se parece a Kai Tak en el final approach.
Very nice!
@david brown Benjamin was killed by a drunk driver many years ago now. He left four daughters (three still in primary school) and a precious wife. He was young.
Love this island use to go there several times a year in the late 90s. Got my sign off for landings in a St Thomas plane (172 RG). I would love to brin my Aztec in there on day.
Boy the video is excellent and everything, but when you say that you feel sorry by the movements of the camera, mann there you fucked it all up because you continued doing it, lmmfao
Nice Airport
This could have been a really interesting and colorful presentation if... The person holding the camera hadn't been flipping back and forth and bouncing all over. As it is this video is good mainly for inducing vertigo in its audience. It is a classic indicator of an amateur filmmaker to pan at speeds well beyond the viewers ability to assimilate.
Wow love those overhead takeoffs!!! I'm going there on the summer! Of course to SJU too!!!
Hopefully we could meet on summer!
yes
did you meet
Love it!! Great footage!!
Thanks!
The Islander is well suited for this. Great vid.

Nice.!
Those are BN-2 islanders, right?
+Anton Westrick Correct!
What a sketchy airport
No other place to put it, small island!
That's not the real blue color in the PR's flag. Many puertorricans don't even show respect for your own flag. Shame on you people of PR
+Mario Soberal--Man you are wrong..They do love their flag..Nice flag..and a lot..Dont you BS..they will hit you easily for saying that..they love punching the pest..
Its just a piece of cloth, Nationalistic patriotic nonsense has got nowhere good.
Is there anything left of these airports after Maria
This is the island after Maria...
