The New York City Subway's "money train" was a specialized train used to collect and transport cash fares from stations throughout the city to a central processing facility. Introduced in 1951, the armored train was a crucial part of the subway's operations, ensuring that the vast sums of money generated from passenger fares were safely secured and transported. The train operated throughout the night, making multiple stops at stations to collect money bags from ticket machines and booths. Armed guards accompanied the money, and the train itself was equipped with reinforced compartments and security measures. In 2006, the introduction of MetroCards and the phasing out of token-based fare collection rendered the money train obsolete. The last money train service ran in January 2006, marking the end of an era for this iconic part of the subway's history.

When you mention the movie Money Train how come you didn't mention Wesley Snipes?
I operated the 12:08 money train (on overtime) a few times as a motorman. It was one of the many different non revenue trains I worked. All of the workers carried hand guns which they had to return at the end of their tour.There was one old timer who had the longest commute I ever jeard of. He lived in Arizona and flew home every weekend. It only cost him $10.00 since his wife worked for an airline. He told me that he was retiring in six months. It was still amazing to hear him tell me this.
That was back in mabey in 1968 or so but I still remember him.
I started working there in 1967, and no, it did not seem like yesterday.

My grandfather worked on the money train. Still have some old zipper bags they used to hold money
Those yellow cars were scrapped in 2 batches. The first group shipped out in early spring 2023 followed by the 2ed group in late summer 2023. They were gutted and placed on 89 foot flat cars and shipped to Lordstown, Ohio for scrap.
I am a retired train operator for NYC transit. You forgot to mention that the train had a CONDUCTOR, POLICE OFFICER, TRAIN OPERATOR. I worked it as a conductor and as a train operator.

It was replaced by a fleet of armored cars. The Jay St site was replaced by a non-secret facility on Metropolitan Ave in Queens.

A couple of additions/corrections. There were three revenue doors, not just one, at 370 Jay St. One in the Manhattan-bound IRT local tunnel east of Borough Hall (2)(3) station, one just west of Lawrence St. on the Manhattan-bound track for the BMT, and the one shown at Jay St. for the IND. When the system opened, riders bought paper tickets for a nickel each. You redeemed the tickets for travel by dropping them in a chopper box and being granted admittance by a human attendant. This was an expensive proposition, so mechanical turnstiles were created that opened with a 5c coin. When the fare increased to a dime in 1948, the turnstiles were all modified for that coin. Tokens were introduced when the fare went to 15c in 1953 since there was no way to modify the existing turnstiles to accept a two-coin combination.

Kudos for directly acknowledging in this video that the subway was initially 3 private companies. This was inferred but not stated in your video about Staten Island rapid transit. Another great video idea would be the experimental trains of the 1930s BMT, or the Malbone street crash leading to the end of wooden passenger cars in the USA.
Technically, four, as the Rockaway Shuttle was once part of the Long Island Railroad (then owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad).

@@VigilanteAgumon Not really. Service to the Rockaways was a complex mixture of LIRR from Brooklyn and Manhattan as well as subway and trolley lines. As far as I know, the Rockaway Shuttle was a creation of the NYCTA after it reopened the line across Jamaica Bay in the early 1960's.
BMT was private. IRT was private. The IND was City-owned.
The three New York City companies weren't all private, only IRT and BMT.
As a kid, I remember seeing the money occasionally running through the MTA and knowing it was the money train lol.
When I commuted to NYC from NJ in the 80s to go to a Tech school I saw first hand how the NYC transit police handled turnstile jumpers it wasn't pretty they didn't have the cameras like today it got a little rough at times. I watched a guy jump the turnstile in front of me out of nowhere 2 Transit cops came running like linebackers slamming this guy into the subway tile wall, lets just say it turned from a grungy white yellow to a bright red splatter they were very vocal about their opinion of skipping the fare. He was hauled off in cuffs. You didn't mess with those cops stuck working the Subways!

Tuneups are often more effective than the courts.
Used to run rebuilt R21/22 cars rebuilt in to R95 cars from 1988 when the R21/22s retired until 2006. 2 of them existed. Only 1 pair exists nowadays. Unfortunately its fate lately is to be scrapped by the transit museum.
I've only heard about the Money Train from the movie but interesting to hear about it and when Donald Patterson says 'Nothing stops the money train' in the movie and what happened in 1904 when the Money train passed the Rail Fire, you can sense that it not just a quote from a movie that it happened in real life and imagen it as well. Enjoyed the video.

I don't think it's crazy that there are large tunnel complexes under the roads and buildings of NYC, one of the oldest cities, it the U.S. I can only imagine the network of tunnels that we don't know about in D.C.
skyscrapers are usually 3-4 stories deep aswell, so many basements and infrastructure corridors.
Very interesting. I saw the movie a long time ago but didn’t thought much of what reality it did represent.
Fun fact : Paris had a similar train. It did ran changing line to line, with an itinerary of main stations where everything was collected and distributed. After this, in Gare de lyon, it transferred to a narrow tunneled line protected by an armored door. This tunnel was going to the headquarter of the RATP and was called « voie des finances ». New tickets would travel the other direction (so the money train would distribute new tickets and collect money at the same time).
If you’ve been to Paris you can see the remnance of this special line on a plateform which appears unusually wide. But it has long been sealed and rails have been removed.
You really should visit the Coney Island yard Transit museum, they keep a running collection of old trains.

@@SixLowa They have a train car from the movie, It was 20 years ago when I went through the Museum after taking Safety training at Coney Island. They said they they had 1 car of every type, so I would expect a real money train car would be there. The Oldest One I got close to had chalk signs. They have special employee family event days,and they rent the cars out for movies.
370 Jay St wasnt much of a secret building, that was the MTA headquarters until they moved into 2 larger buildings (1 down the street on Livingston), the other in Lower Manhattan)
I believe NYU owns the building now

Fast fact: my maternal grandfathers last position with the TA (now MTA) was as a token booth clerk at said 50th street station. (4:55)
My Uncle Jim, a WW2 vet with Malaria episodes, worked as a token booth clerk also in Manhattan. He was also a coin collector (as was I) and he would set aside valuable coins, replacing them with his own money, and sell them to coin dealers who would show up at night and ask him if he had "anything interesting". I was the beneficiary of coins I needed for my albums. RIP, Uncle Jim

as a new RCI - Road Car Inspector I responded numerous time to the gaped trains , 90% it was a money train especially after new pick for RTO crew , most of this call came after midnight ,

There's actually a 1:87 model of this, although these days you'll have to find it on the second-hand market. I was kinda interested, but never found them on sale.

The Washington Metro System had a money-train with backend windows and the seats removed. Armed guards would roll metal carts into the cars and they would be off…a very quick operation.
Supposedly the prop train for Money Train is still stored at Coney Island Yard (rusting away) along with other trains that have some historical significance but since it's a huge yard I have not wandered around for any length of time as my shift is overnight and they love to schedule me to go down there in the middle of winter for mandatory training. 207th St Yard contains the Holiday Vintage train for a month or two after the Christmas run and I was able to hitch a ride on it as it made its way to the yard as I had my safety vest (and track worker helmet) and ID card.
I remember seeing the money trucks in Chicago at the Rosmont station a couple of times.
It was late at night. The trucks were huge. I think they were tri axle.
This was in the late 90’s

It was mentioned in an episode of TV show BARNEY MILLER long before 1995.
The Tube in London had multiple operators and redundancies for many years. My heart goes out to the good people of London and NYC who have to travel in fear of being victims of crime.
In the early part where you explain how MTA was formed, that is very similar to London underground which was formed of a number of railways to become London transport in 1933
I wonder if the London Underground had a similar system? I know there was special mini underground railway that caried physical mail around between major post offices and sorting centres and perhaps the money went that way too. London is full of tunnels underground including closed stations.

I never knew about that door in Jay Street wow. Just assume it was maintenance.
When the IRT opened in 1904, riders paid their fare at a ticket booth. They were given a ticket which they dropped into a "ticket chopper" and then moved to the platform. I don't know when "turnstiles" and tokens were put into use.
Turnstiles came into wide use during the mid-1920s. The chopper boxes and attendants were too labour intensive.
There still remain vending machines at every station that accept cash. In a few cases, the old token booths are still open. While they can sort and count the money, how is it collected from the machines and deposited in the MTA's bank account?
Armored cars. There's a revenue processing facility in Maspeth.

Great video, however you’re incorrect. The operation still continues til this day. They just use standard armor trucks instead of trains. Money is still transported to a secret location. They made this change back in 2007.

There’s a book called Under The Sidewalks Of New York The Story Of The Greatest Subway System In The World by Brian J. Cudahy on page 166 shows a picture of a revenue car Number # 66 it’s a double end car builder unknown but to me it looks like it was built by ACF

R22 7339 (the 1974 original) was scrapped.
That Money Train movie went on about how secure the train was - except the two heroes were able to effortlessly penetrate it via an evidently unsecured EZ-open grating on the train's underside!

The "Money Train" from the film is still around. It's at the Coney Island Yard.
I had operated in the money train once on my RDO
So New York had a similar problem to Chicago when they too had to consolidate all of their lines. And The NTA was established just 3 years after the Chicago Transit Authority was established. Two of America’s largest transit agencies. Except Chicago never had a money train.
7:30 - Secret tunnels under Brooklyn, you say?
Surprising.
The elevated Queensboro Plaza station is the only one in the system used by both 'A' Division & 'B' Division trains.
That station is the only one with a cross platform transfer between A and B divisions. There are other stations (Times Square-42nd St. is one obvious one, Union Square-14th St. is another) where A and B division trains both stop at what were once stations with separate fare controls which now have free transfers between the two. Queensboro Plaza once was really two separate stations which were combined into one in 1949 after the city bought out the IRT and the BMT in 1940. Many of the free transfer points in the system were created in the postwar years as the BOT and later the NYCTA tried to improve the system as funding permitted. I used to occasionally see a money train making its rounds when waiting for a train after a late evening job assignment.
It's not lost. It's sitting at Coney Island train yard. Along with the movie one.

I worked the Money Train as rookie C/R on the extra list back in 1985 on the 7 Line .I made overtime that night ,Revenue agent last day on job on last run to pick up cash tokens we was to make connection with the BMT Money Train at Queens Borough Plaza ;BMT COMAND CENTER console dispatcher BMT Money Train (Uptown) North bound was held up due track gangs.Console dispatcher Jay Street told Motor Man title now T/O make reverse move back Uotown North Bound line up to 33rd st.Rawson middle .We waited until Downtown Money train left Astoria .Finally we made connection at Queens Borough Plaza;retiring Revenue agent made his last overtime I made my overtime 😂.
i have actually seen armed mta employees within the last 3 years empty out the metrocard machines though the method was they went downstairs(i was by an elevated station) and loaded into a mta truck

2006? Pretty sure the last time I saw a money train was was about 8-10 years ago (at most). 🤔 I guess it was an "open secret" because you often found out what that train was from someone telling you about it. It was commonly seen in the wee hours of while everyone was either in bed or in the club...back when the city itself never slept that is. 😒

I well recall the money train. Having a job, that will let me off at 11:30 Plus hours at night, almost into the wee hours of the morning, I would see the money train parkinga at such stations as 59th street, and 72nd Street in New York City. And, at least five security agents would come out, with the hands on their side arms, ready to face any threat. They would go to the Token booth, collect whatever they were collecting, and exit, with the same preparation and defensive preparation. They would enter the money train, and the train would take off. The film, once it was released, I noticed that the money train ceaseed to exist. Enough said.
Call this channel City Histories! It's still distinctive, and far more accurate to the channel's content!

If i understand corectly the money train of the movie has reached preservation but no money train that actually ran on the network?
The real money trains were known as "collectors." There were 8 trainsets, with one of them being a spare. One set was preserved as part of the New York Transit Museum (I'm not sure if it's presently on display at Court Street or not) and the rest were scrapped. The fake money trains, for the movie, were also preserved but have been rotting away at Coney Island Yard for years.

Honestly from watching the movie a lot of people's first impression would probably be that the "Money train" is made up.
I thought those were maintenance trains when I saw them.
