If you take a longer peice and encircle the entire brim, you can mold and shape the brim exactly how you want it. Everyone of my boonies have been done this way. I won't wear one without my bailing wire. It's how you perfect a damn near perfect piece of kit.
Not bad but go to the center rear where the edging comes together, you can push a piece of bailing wire completely around and shape that thing how ever you want, all the way around
I would use a "U" shaped channel made out of pewter about 3/8 of an inch on each wing, so that way I can crimp it into the front part of the hat, and shape it as I wish Afterwards when I no longer need it like that, I can just remove it and it enables me to fold or roll the hat into a tight tube, to put into a small vest, or pen pockets.
We used to just trim off the outer 3/4" and leave the edges frayed. The idea is to obscure the head silhouette so you don't look like a guy wearing a big ass brimmed hat. It also prevents the brim from dropping when your coming out of water, which was common. The pacific area
I’ve been in the army for 24 years (13m) some of these comments are definitely made by people who have never worn one, and definitely haven’t been in combat.
@rooster4669 Makes no difference, they could be hunters. So the army experience has nothing to do with being able to own and talk about ex military gear
@@WestNorfolkFishermana hat is a tool at the end of the day. I feel that people like to gate keep so much these days and I just want to get outside and be in nature with a nice hat. I’m 100% doing this method to my boonie.

Sounds great. An untouched gem right there. Would you just make one cut and use one wire?
In Vietnam soldier did the same thing but with c ration wire from the box of 12 they came in
I inserted a length of stainless steel safety wire in the brim that can be used as a snare or garrote if needed.
Why a garrotte
@@dylannnnnnnnn Its a weapon. Look it up.
@@fukenbroken1 I know but why would you need one
@@dylannnnnnnnn You never know, Its just an option.
@@fukenbroken1 i guess so

The crazy shit that comes into my feed... But this one's actually very useful 👍👍 thanks

Great idea. I did that to a crushable fedora that I own
I also shorten the brims on my boonies as well.
Man what a great idea. I would get a lighter and melt the little slit that way it keeps it closed and prevents unwanted frays
I'm want to know is, what type of wire I should use if I sweat and wash my hat alot and want to avoid rust/corrosion.
I stitch the base of the brim to the base of the top layer of cloth. Does the same thing
Good idea! Thank you! 👍
You can do it for the entire perimeter with a similar type wire or install weed whacker line for the remaining perimeter.
Good Video however you forgot to tell everyone the lid to the Stanley Pot also fits the Ozark Trail Stainless Steel Cup.
??? Why would talk about that in this video?
Excellent idea 💡
There used to be one on the back of the brim you can run wire around the brim and shape
Cool! Thanks 😊
Too bad they just don't make the hat with the wire already in the brim.
I like that great hack thanks 👍🏻
i was ready to say "heresy!" because i thought you were gonna cut part of the brim off lol
Great!

I've seen some folks stitch them up as tricornes
😮
My Boonie hats I cut off the brim. The brim is too wide and obstructs the view. Plus over time, the frayed edges age well.

Thank you for your service! But idk how not seeing combat makes someone not qualified for talking about a hat.

Or you can fold it in half every time you put it away
Or you can buy a UF PRO BOONIE HAT so you don't have to do this trick
DIY is more satisfying
