Excellent commentary! I am no engineer, but I think the gates could have been opened sooner. However, I am glad we have these spillways in place!

If the Morganza and Old River structures ever fail together Baton Rouge & New Orleans will be high & dry and you'll have to scrape Morgan City off the north coast of the Yucatan peninsula.
You know what would be cheaper? Buy out the families that live down on those flood areas and let the damn water out instead of keeping these levees on max. Towboats are sinking and people are losing their lives over this high ass river we seem to be keeping because the corps doesn’t wanna open the gates. Now what’s more costly a select few down in the bayou who gets flooded or levees breaking and having a whole damn city devastated. I’m not the smartest man but you keep playing with those waters at max level and I guarantee you will regret it. Damn government/corps playing with peoples lives
I know you wrote this 2 weeks ago but have you been keeping up with this? Search LSU hydrologist on the morganza spillway. That will explain why they are not wanting to open it. But if they don't figure something out soon, we're going to be in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation...
85 cents for a soda?!
I can remember 5 cents for a soda as long as you drank it there, no deposit. Of course I'm 73 yrs old and that was in the mid '50s. For 10 cents you could get a soda and a Hershey Bar about 4 times bigger than now.
The Morganza structure is part of a plan from 1927!! Let that sink in. The hubris of the Army Corp is astounding. Truthfully the Mississippi needs to be split beyond its current 70/30 norm. Everyone says this is ‘just to save NOLA’. That’s true on its face but the economic impacts of losing control of the river would be devastating to the national economy. Solving this will take a disaster. Sad to say but no politician has the stones to make very hard very unpopular decisions.
Sorry, I'm confused. Are you suggesting that the new ratio should be higher for the Mississippi or higher for the Atchafalaya?
