I'll wait for the proper Rocky 4K collection in the future. I love these movies too much to pay for this half arsed collection. At least The Godfather 4K set was done gracefully.
I struggle with this set. I am a huge fan of the series, yet I did return this to Amazon. I want to support Physical Media .. I don't mind minor mistakes. Yet, I can't support laziness from a Major movie company (Warner). While I would not notice the sound issues, it's the principal of not supporting bad quality control or cash grab that makes me send it back. I look forward to purchasing it in the future and I would be happy to pay more if the quality is there..
1. Audio is still weird, down mix. Hard to notice.
2. Pitch issue is noticeable but only if you look for it. Lower pitch.
3. Foreign tracks has pitch issue. It's ok
4. + directors cut with Happy birthday robot taken out.
It could’ve been a contender.
Whatever issues there may be with this set aside, I'm looking forward to the director's cut of Rocky 4. I love 4 as it is, but want to see what he wanted to change.
The audio stuff doesn't really bother me so much (if I have a 5.1 option, I'm usually always going to take that over mono or 2.0) but not including Rocky V and Rocky Balboa is a total deal breaker.
I'd love a 9 film set of all six Rocky films and the three Creed movies in 4K at some point.
I still enjoy my DVD box set with the first 5 films..I'll stick with those.

Hi! Happy I found your channel recently as I was always an avid collector and couldn't find anyone to just review physical media anymore. Everyone is streaming but when it comes to certain movies I'm somewhat of a purist and need to experience it in the best quality possible (or can afford) in my Home Theater. Great review! As for Rocky 5, on my end I could do without it. I haven't seen the Rocky IV Director's cut yet but had heard about it. I agree and also like those goofy elements. I find they're important in telling the story as they show us a guy who after proving himself over and over and having made so much money, has gotten very comfortable and just living his life; he has no need to prove himself again but a part of him misses it. And while surround sound is great, if the original was in mono, it should definitely be included. I don't see myself watching a 1930s movie with surround for example.

Think I'll wait and see. I actually only have the Rocky movies (including Creed I and II) on DVD, so I'd like to upgrade and 4K would make sense, but I want them all and hopefully with a decent features package.
I live in the uk and this box set just reduced to £45, which to me, is a no brainer. I already own Creed 1 and Creed 2 on 4k so I don't mind waiting for Rocky 5 and Creed 3 to be released as I'll just buy them when the come out. great video as ever Heath.
I decided to go with the steelbook for each film individually because that also has the blu ray which I don't have for some of these. If you want me to buy a box set it needs to be something special which in my opinion this is laughably bad. If the studio wants my money for a box set then they need to deliver an actual box set and not one 4k case with a slip on it and brand it a box set. Whoever did the slip design definitely phoned it in because that art is horrible. I realize this isn't coming from a boutique label where they often put extra care into the physical presentation, but I need more than this. Its frustrating that the studio wants to do the bare minimum and then expects to reap a bunch of sales when they could probably sell a ton more box sets if they just put a bit more effort into it.
I have the Rocky: Heavyweight Collection that I bought a while back, and that's what I'll most likely stick with at the moment. Unfortunately, the 4K boxed set only includes the first 4 films. There are some technical issues. The Making of Rocky vs Drago: Keep Punching is shorter than the free RUclips version, which is really baffling. The 4K boxed set is way overpriced at $65, especially given the compromises that were made. As you've already mentioned, there will probably be another boxed in the next few years or so. The Rocky movies are a hallmark of American cinema for sure. Though, its been a while since I've watched them to be honest. With that aside, thanks, Heath! I really appreciate the hard work! I just want the ORIGINAL OSCAR NOMINATED mono sound mix on ROCKY. There's a reason why it was nominated. To not include the original theatrical sound on films especially when they have Oscar nominations for them, is egregious. There's a reason why Speilberg demanded that the latest BD and 4K releases of JAWS include his original mono sound mix. Before his intervention, they had included the remixed and inferior 5.1 with new effects replacing the original.

I have heard the reason Rocky 5 and Rocky Balboa were not in this set is cause Sylvester Stallone is making new cuts for both films similar to what he did with Rocky IV....

that's not really good, a decent release should have a ratio of something like 70/30 or even 60/40. 50/50 seems really bad

The pitch issue may be more noticeable to people than you think. Here in the UK we always had PAL speedo on DVDs so we've become accustomed to the correct speed and lower pitch that blurays give us. I think we would be more aware of a pitch issue.
Although it can’t be proven either way, I lean toward the idea that the majority of 4K buyers at present are not casual fans and would be more inclined to focus on aspects of a release with more attention to detail than other formats. This is not to sell dedicated Blu collectors short, but certainly the longevity of Blu-rays and DVDs before it have likely yielded more average Saturday night audiences who tip the scales from clueless to just being more forgiving with possibly flawed presentations. At this early stage of 4K adoption, I’m not seeing that as much, for better or worse. Sometimes I do witness laughably unreasonable expectations, but other times the points are quite salient and don’t deserve to be relegated to the argument that “most people” won’t notice anything wrong. In this case, wanting the original theatrical soundtrack from a film’s release year should not be just shrugged off anywhere near the debate of ridiculous nitpicking that “most people”don’t care about. Current 4K buyers are for the most part learned and experienced film devotees who want the content to match the capabilities of the format. They are likely not uneducated, apathetic viewers streaming ROCKY on their nacho cheese stained phone screens.
The lack of original audio is a major problem for purists (me), but casual fans are a huge part of the audience. One only needs to look at the many positive reviews for this set to see how the flaws have gone entirely unnoticed by upwards of half the reviewers (as of this writing). As someone who deals with literally thousands of movie collectors each week, I wish 4K collectors were more aware of the particulars of how the format works, but that doesn't seem to be the case, at least not in my experience.
That’s great info to have, Heath and I will trust your resources, which certainly outweigh mine. It’s easy to get lost in the bubble of the cognoscenti and fall prey to assumptions. So I appreciate your response and will learn from it. Don’t get me wrong, I am not one of those perpetually whining nitpickers about every release, who at times far exceed the casual viewers on the frustration level. But I always hope for a middle ground with at least a minimum of education and tolerance on both ends of the spectrum. Thanks again for your learned reply, my friend.
Sure thing! Just sharing my experience with the RUclips audience, which seems to have lots of opinions about 4K, but not always informed ones. Not that I'm any sort of expert, either! I don't want to make it sound like I'm an authority, I'm just a fan with a passion for movies and movie history. I'm sure I miss plenty of details myself.

I have a Blu-ray set. Not sure how many movies are in it at the moment. Rocky 2 is my fav and the only 4k I'm interested in having. I'll pick it up eventually

Whether it's needed or not, 8K will absolutely happen. Money! 😉
I think this just sums up why I don't upgrade to 4k. The increase in quality and extras from DVD to bluray was always noticeable and there's very rarely a time when they didn't remaster a film for bluray (as opposed to DVDs where you could even get VHS transfers on a DVD). But the difference between bluray and 4k is negligible. Slight picture increase if your eyesight is good enough to notice it but it often comes with compromises in other fields, like modern colour grading, only theatrical cuts on 4K, missing bonus features etc. I think I'll stick with my blurays.
The people that over analyze these things in my opinion have lost the root joy of watching movies. As my wife says, "I would like Hotel California on SACD or a cassette tape". Why? Because it's a great song. And Rocky is a great movie and the quality of its craftmanship supersedes an audio pitch change. However, I will say all the issues with Rocky release certainly points to more 3rd party outsourcing quality control done on the cheap.
I think COBRA is stallones BEST MOVIE. I wonder if it's on "4k" ?

The movies looked great, I enjoyed watching them again. Still, somewhere in the middle of the first movie, when Rocky and Adrian are sitting on the couch watching television, Adrian is in focus and Rocky isn't; some other scenes around this time-stamp have this issue as well. I've noticed issues like this before on 4K discs. Do You have an explanation for this? I don't think it was a technical mistake while filming the movie.
That's anamorphic lens distortion, something that is common in movies shot on film, especially with wide lenses, which will distort parts of the image and leave certain elements in the frame looking a little out of focus or even blurry. You mostly see it in movies from the 1970s. It wouldn't have anything to do with the 4K presentation, other than perhaps being a little more clear to the eye thanks to the higher resolution.

If Stallone is working on a directors cut of #5, do ya think he could come up with reasonable explanation how his son aged so much between 4 and 5. How long was Rocky over there? Nitpicking I know, but didn't anyone think of this continuity error while making 5?
I’ve seen all the rocky movies except for rocky v is it actually worth watching. I was always told growing up it was terrible and not worth the time. So I’ve always skipped over it when watching the series. Should I be going back and watching it?
Rocky V is the black sheep of the series, but since Stallone is working on a new version, it might be wise to wait and see what he has up his sleeve.

I would do it, its not as bad as people remember. Its worth it for the narrative and fitting it into the series. I like Cereal's point here

Another yet again cash in Boxset with no extra features apart from the new cut of Rocky 4...Yes it has improved picture quality but who cares....They have even managed to mess up the soundtrack so some of the films like Rocky 2....Waste of money....They didn’t even include Rocky 4 new cut on standard blu ray....Possibly the worse Rocky boxset out there...At least the dvd and blu ray box sets didn’t have audio pitch issues.
