It’s 2013, I’m realizing on my drive home that I’m at a dead end job and not as happy as I should be. The phone rings, it’s the girl I love, she goes into great details about our feelings and tells me she doesn’t love me. Before I even get a word in she hangs up. It’s cold, dark and lonely on the roadway, I’m broken and the only thing I can think to do is flip on the radio. This song is playing and I debate my entire life for 4 minutes.
Life is unfair and cruel at times, it’s good to know others feel pain no matter what the circumstances are and for that one moment we both shared in the pains we face in life.

Sucks dude, but we all go through that shit at one point or another.. its sad, but a crucial part of life I feel every man has to traverse to appreciate how much better your next chapter will be. - Being 37 yrs old now and a husband and father those emotions you're feeling will come in handy later in life.. You'll know your true love and it'll be a different kind of love that won't break you out of nowhere like that other one did.

You can tell so much emotion went into writing this song, and there's so much it takes out of him when he performs it.
In a way, it must be very difficult to have such a deeply personal and sad song be arguably your most famous and most requested. Probably brings back some very heavy and difficult memories.

Ben folds is so consistent in his sound and performance. A great performer and does not disappoint in comparison to other bands that sound different and not as good as their studio recording. Ben folds however is magical because he sounds on point like his studio recordings but still a unique live recording

I think he's one of the most underrated musicians out there... I like many styles of music but when it comes to this genre he's up there... I was surprised to learn what the song actually meant. I wasn't that far off the true maning but completely misunderstood the circumstance he was trying his best to put out there for us. I just thought she was tough to be in a relationship with. Of course there are better keyboardists so chill out but I love his style of writing and playing it.

He has written other sad songs, I'd recommend checking out the album 'Songs for Silverman' and checking the closing track off 'way to normal' called 'Kylie from Connecticut'

Well, he just wrote the chorus to this song, if I'm not mistaken. Sounds really great live, though maybe some back-up vocals by Darren would help during the high parts.

@@IBM704 that’s correct, Darren wrote the verses and Ben said it was the missing piece to a song he’d tried to compose for a long time, turned out to be a masterpiece.

The sound was kind of bad on this recording. The piano sounds a bit like it's midi doesn't it? The best version of brick is probably from the Ben Folds Live album.
