It’s 2013, I’m realizing on my drive home that I’m at a dead end job and not as happy as I should be. The phone rings, it’s the girl I love, she goes into great details about our feelings and tells me she doesn’t love me. Before I even get a word in she hangs up. It’s cold, dark and lonely on the roadway, I’m broken and the only thing I can think to do is flip on the radio. This song is playing and I debate my entire life for 4 minutes. Life is unfair and cruel at times, it’s good to know others feel pain no matter what the circumstances are and for that one moment we both shared in the pains we face in life.
Holy hell bro, layin it all out on the line aren't ya? Sucks dude, but we all go through that shit at one point or another.. its sad, but a crucial part of life I feel every man has to traverse to appreciate how much better your next chapter will be. - Being 37 yrs old now and a husband and father those emotions you're feeling will come in handy later in life.. You'll know your true love and it'll be a different kind of love that won't break you out of nowhere like that other one did. Hope that some kind of sense
You can tell so much emotion went into writing this song, and there's so much it takes out of him when he performs it. In a way, it must be very difficult to have such a deeply personal and sad song be arguably your most famous and most requested. Probably brings back some very heavy and difficult memories.
Ben folds is so consistent in his sound and performance. A great performer and does not disappoint in comparison to other bands that sound different and not as good as their studio recording. Ben folds however is magical because he sounds on point like his studio recordings but still a unique live recording
I think he's one of the most underrated musicians out there... I like many styles of music but when it comes to this genre he's up there... I was surprised to learn what the song actually meant. I wasn't that far off the true maning but completely misunderstood the circumstance he was trying his best to put out there for us. I just thought she was tough to be in a relationship with. Of course there are better keyboardists so chill out but I love his style of writing and playing it.
He has written other sad songs, I'd recommend checking out the album 'Songs for Silverman' and checking the closing track off 'way to normal' called 'Kylie from Connecticut'
Milton... u missed it .. its really sad how you still dont understand this song lol.. anti abortion ..whats even more sad is that in 2021 f000les treat abortion like birth control
Well, he just wrote the chorus to this song, if I'm not mistaken. Sounds really great live, though maybe some back-up vocals by Darren would help during the high parts.
@@IBM704 that’s correct, Darren wrote the verses and Ben said it was the missing piece to a song he’d tried to compose for a long time, turned out to be a masterpiece.
The sound was kind of bad on this recording. The piano sounds a bit like it's midi doesn't it? The best version of brick is probably from the Ben Folds Live album.

He has added a brilliance of layers to this perfection of a chorus! Unreal, Ben.
a very emotional song - such sorrow and beauty.
This is a cool song. It also takes me back to the great 90's when all was well
I actually like Ben Folds's voice a lot better on this song now that he's older!
Agreed
Same!
JMVideoProduction21 he looks like my 65 year old mother that I adore
This song makes me cry for no reason... Such a lil depressing kind of song but take me to the state of happiness and satisfaction with relieve.
He sounds better here than on the original, time made his voice even better.

one of my best song ever of all time....
Absolutely beautiful 😭❤️❤️❤️
Such an AWESOME, honest song by an awesome artist. :)
god given talent
Great song about a fun vacation!
any child-free vacation is fun
Excellent live version
nice to see something live that sounds better than the produced version. There's a reason not every band does these live sets.
OMG. I just watched this performance of a song I love. An ad came up right after for baby furniture. How sick is that?
I fucking love this drummer, have since I was 13 (34 now)
Do you play the drums?
@@pauljordan4452 yes
His voice got deeper.
Love it💙
Excellent composition!! and presentation!!
악스코리아 생각난다.

wish ben would write more sad songs :/ i mean this is like his only sad song and look how popular it was and still is
He has written other sad songs, I'd recommend checking out the album 'Songs for Silverman' and checking the closing track off 'way to normal' called 'Kylie from Connecticut'
Scott N THE MAJORITY OF HIS SONGS ARE SAD WTF WHAT CRACK ARE YOU SMOKING
Damn, I never got this song until I went through a weird breakup. She's alone, and I'm alone, and I know it. That last drop off in a nutshell.
You know that this is not about being lonely... this is about he and his girlfriend getting an abortion.
Milton... u missed it .. its really sad how you still dont understand this song lol.. anti abortion ..whats even more sad is that in 2021 f000les treat abortion like birth control
Good shit, you actually listen to good music stace hahaha 👍👍
I do like that both of the songs that have been put up were partially or wholly written by Darren Jessee...
Nice.....
Stu from The Hangover...
His voice got better with age. Dropped with a little more rasp.
Well, he just wrote the chorus to this song, if I'm not mistaken. Sounds really great live, though maybe some back-up vocals by Darren would help during the high parts.
i know this is old but he wrote the verses and one of the other guys i think darren wrote the chorus

This song is obviously about his cat.
Ben Olds 45
Ben fucking First!
we're the millers
Jammie Cullum brought me here.
Original hipster
No
Far from it.
90s artists didnt have studio editing or voice enhancing, they had to record perfectly with no mistakes or theyd have to start all over
erm.... thats actually a piano, not a guitar.... what the flip guys 🤓
ben looks better with short hair....his music was better when he had short hair too.
Lol
The Anti-Samson
LOL
Short hair?? The guy was bald and now he's got a Beatles haircut. There is witchcraft afoot here.
Is this song is all about abortion?
Yvonne De Guzman Yes.
Ok.. i am working in 711 .when i played this song. And american told me about this song
Really??? So what was the story is all about???? 😢😢😢
@@rod_triplxvi739 it's retelling the story of his hs girlfriend and he going through the sad process of having an abortion.

Where you got that from is beyond me. Midi? I mean, hes playing a real fuckin piano right before your eyes. Dafuq is your brain on?
it sounded like he forgot the first words to the song, slurring the whole time, timing was terrible, damn Travis... Whitener is still a beast though
