Nice description of Seaspeed/Hoverspeed in a Hoverlloyd video. So for the other side of what became Hoverspeed. Hoverlloyd was formed in 1964 as Cross-Channel Hover Services Ltd. They were renamed Hoverlloyd the following year and were initially owned as a partership between the Swedish Lloyd and the Swedish American Line companies. They operated the SR.N6 from 1966 from Ramsgate Harbour to Calais Harbour. In 1969 they moved to dedicated hoverports and operated 4 SR.N4 craft (Swift, Sure, Sir Christopher and The Prince of Wales) between Pegwell Bay (Ramsgate) and Calais. They had a fierce rivalry with Seaspeed and operated successfully until the 1980s where increasing operating costs and greater competition led to the decision to merge with Seaspeed to form Hoverspeed in 1981. This led to the abandonment of Pegwell Bay as a passenger terminal in 1983 whereupon it became the engineering base for the SR.N4 fleet until 1987 whereupon everything moved to Dover.
Excellent. Hoverlloyd didn't last long - started 1965 (under a different name - Cross-Channel Hover Services Ltd) and in 1981 it merged with Seaspeed to form Hoverspeed. Ramsgate to Calais. Judging by the pier this must be Ramsgate.
They were Amazing the sound of those hovercraft just blew me away (Nearly literaly) as a child. Amazing machines.
