Great shot Randy, probably the best shot I've ever seen you make on a show! I'm coming up to hunt MT from SD this year simply because of the knowledge you've passed through your show! Thanks!
Thanks for all your great hunts you share with us. I really appreciate your ethical style. I have watched every episode you have from the beginning and not once did you compromise your standards even though you had opportunities to do so. Failure and frustration are so much apart of the hunt so thank you for showing the viewers the real side. Keep up the good work and check out the north west corner of SD sometime. We have great public hunting opportunities.
Thanks, Ben. If I couldn't handle failure, hunting would be a big problem for me. I'm pretty far below the mid-point of talent, so I expect a lot of frustrations and failures. Best of luck this season.
All your episodes are awesome, but you can definitely tell the difference between the older "old school" style videos and the newer realistic style. I'm so glad most hunters are no longer doing those reenactments haha.
Thanks for bringing us along on another trip. I have hunted elk, but I always find something to learn from you with every video. Where there is a will, there is a way! I will have to try the "nap trick" sometime ;-).
Great episode...love all the fly in hunts. We have some BLM without access around here as well but nothing that big. Keep pulling these episodes out of the vault...we love them!!
Love it! You fly in and hunt, scoring a big 6 while seeing even bigger bucks. The guy next door just paid the outfitter 2 or 3 times more $ to hunt and shoot the same size bull. You show its possible.
Thank you for sharing your videos, they're so relateable to me as a regular guy hunter. Most shows are basically paid advertisements, but you show that regular guys can do it and not mortgage their children. People need to see that. I'd have shot that spike though! I'm a younger hunter though with a growing family that just about subsists on wild game and fish, it's hard for me to let sure groceries walk away. Thanks again for sharing, be safe out there!
It works great on elk. I've take many with my .308 and 165 grain Nosler Partitions. The longest shot I've taken at an elk with a .308 was just a bit over 340 yards. I'm not one of the long distance guys. I prefer to get as close as possible.
Im from Germany, even though it is great to have public land hunting, It would really be hard to keep the cool with so many others running around... Great Hunting though! Would love to try it someday... There is only private land hunting in Germany. I guess with a small country like Germany it would be a complete disaster if you had public hunting land... And all animals would be in the quiter private areas anyways...
Excellent!!!! Do you think, Keith, that those extra hunters were there because they saw your videos and decided to do the same as you do? And, even though you were inconvenienced, would not that be a victory for you? Thanks!
Yes, I am happy to see other hunters there. When they decide to come and set up in front of us, that is not very high public land behavior. Unwritten rule for me is the first person there gets the location and I move along. Thanks for watching.
Are you from Montana? I am...and I know some epic private land for some monster bulls for archery season anyway lol they never seem to be there when I go rifle hunting tho....I always find them BLM lands and state lands....if your not from Montana congrats on being able to come hunt on our lands...
I’ve seen a lot of people ask how much it costs, but who did you use, and where did you fly out of? We drew that tag a couple of years ago and had a great time in the snowies. This would be an epic experience for my veteran buddies and myself. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
@@Fresh_Tracks Sir, would there be any way that John and I can contact you directly? We are both active duty military and would love to pick your brain on public land hunting in Montana. Thanks for your help and what you do for us as hunters. Love your videos.
Nice hunt! Randy, is it a necessity to call during the bow season to harvest an elk (bull or cow)? It will be my first time hunting elk this year and I haven't mastered the calls yet.
No, not necessary. Sure helps in locating elk. I do most my bugling in the dark, locating responses before the sun comes up, then making a list of places to find them when the sun rises.
Randy you need to do a video no helicopters no pack animals no help but one cameraman. Show how a single person hunter can track kill and pack out by yourself to show it can be done and the best ways to do it. Kinda get back to the simple hard hunt. Love your videos. Just want to see how a single hunter with no help can be successful.
Funny how many tags I apply for, year after year, that I never draw. I've got maximum points in many states for many species. In some states I've applied for species many years in units where my odds were 50%, but I always end up in the wrong 50%. I suspect if folks applied for 60 tags per year, as I do to try get enough hunts for the TV show, they would probably draw a few. And yes, I am lucky. I always say I am the luckiest man that ever lived, though not because I might draw a limited entry elk tag once in a while. I am lucky to live in America, free to do what I love, and have the best family and friends a person could ask for.
$2,000-$2,500 for all three, depending upon how many elk need to be hauled out. That is $600-800 per hunter. Not cheap, but not the $10,000 number most people tell me they think it would cost. And far cheaper than the $15K elk hunts that happen next door.
That's much cheaper than I had assumed but still outta my budget sadly. Retired USAF E6 TSGT on fixed income...I just will have to stick to public land hunts here in Wyoming that I can access with my truck. I definitely don't disagree with you though, if it's within your means to access land this way, then by all means do so. Love your videos
I drew the same tag as you did. I had 3 year of applying. I know guys who didn't draw that had 3 years as well!! So why did you get a tag? Equal opportunity is wondering why a guy with no points drew and a guy with 3 years of applying didn't . I guess equal opportunity one applies if your not famous. Any real feed back would be nice.
You would be well served to do your research before making comments with the tone you did. Not sure why would you ask for "real feed back" from a supposed famous person you imply is somehow exempted from the "equal opportunity" tag drawing system; a system you seem to not understand. Below is how it works, and how you drew with 3 points and while some with 10 points may not have drawn. Montana uses a bonus point system, not a preference point system. Bonus points are like raffle tickets. The more you have, the better your chances, but no guarantee to anyone. Preference point systems give the tag to the person with the most points. Big difference in the two systems. I have the maximum bonus points for moose and sheep, yet every year hunters with 0, 1, 2, or far less points than I have end up with a tag. Why? Because even though they had fewer "raffle tickets" (bonus points) in the system, they lucked out and they got assigned a far lower random number than I did, giving them the tag. This can happen in states that use a bonus point system rather than a preference point system.
Thank you for explaining, and I guess that I really didn't understand the difference from bonus and preference point. And yes I could of worded it better so it didn't feel like I was attacking you. I am sorry.
Loved watching this hunt. You can see the excitement on your face when the herd of cows came through .
Yeah, I do get kind of excited, even with cows.
Randy seeing all those elk was awesome, thanks for sharing.

Really enjoy the show Randy and watching your adventures.
Thanks. And thanks for watching.
Great hunt Randy! Love your videos thank you for sharing - Tim
Thanks for watching.
One of my favorite episodes. Such a great show!
Thanks for watching.

Randy Newberg, Hunter......WOW! I see only public hunting in my future. lol
nice shot and another good video.
wow thats some serious patience you have. nice work.
Thanks for watching.
Great video. That's why we need to keep our public lands public.
Agree completely.
anyone see the quail on the bottom right at 6:27?
sage grouse not quail
And Randy said he had a grouse problem. I guess not in the old days...
Awesome work greetings from Canada I'm big hunter to great job Randy thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge with the world

Great video!
At 6:26 you can see a grouse get up and walk off in the lower right corner. Randy must have been to winded to notice and not go after it.
I love this hunt! Getting to that public land!
By the way I enjoy your videos, all the information you give us, really helpful thanks
Thanks for watching.
Randy how dose .308 perform on elk what grain would Recommend and what is the longest shot you would take with 308

Hey Randy I watch your videos every chance I get and was wondering if you take handicapped hunters on elk hunts
Thank you
Favorite hunting vids without all the fake commercial crap I don't care about
Glad you like it. Thanks for watching.

Nice, but what did you used this hunt ? .308 or 300 win mag ?
.308 Win.
What is the ballpark cost to be flown in and back out?
For three guys, the total cost is $2K-$2.5K, split three ways. Depends on how many elk you fly out, as that increases airtime.
@@Fresh_Tracks thanks so much, love your show. Randy
Randy what part of Montana do you live in?
Bozeman.
What kind of GPS are you using Randy?
Garmin Montana.
Randy, how much did it cost you to have your stuff flown in like that?
About $700-800 per guy, when split among three or four guys, depending upon air time needed to shuttle gear and possibly elk.
Nice Kimber have one just like it! Caliber?
.308 Win.
Nice job Randy! Btw did your friend tag out too?
Thanks. Bart tag out later in the season.
Excellent!!!!

I am from Montana, Bozeman to be exact. Thanks for watching.
what is the cost of helo fly-in vs simply paying landowner trespass fee?
Great hunt! Which caliber were you using for this one? I know the 3 you like. Couldn't tell which one :) (I know it doesn't matter, but I'm curious).
.308 Win.
Thanks Randy. Keep the videos coming, I love your channel.
What is the price of tags for Elk and/or whitetail in the US usually ?
Guillaume Doriat depends what state you're in. Here in Wyoming it's around $50 for either, if you are a resident. Nonresident tags are 10x that.
Guillaume Doriat $52/$577 for elk or $38/$312 for deer to be specific
I’ve seen a lot of people ask how much it costs, but who did you use, and where did you fly out of? We drew that tag a couple of years ago and had a great time in the snowies. This would be an epic experience for my veteran buddies and myself. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Central Montana Aviation out of Lewistown is who we used.
Randy Newberg, Hunter appreciate the insight my man!
@@Fresh_Tracks Sir, would there be any way that John and I can contact you directly? We are both active duty military and would love to pick your brain on public land hunting in Montana. Thanks for your help and what you do for us as hunters. Love your videos.
What caliber/bullet did you use on this hunt Randy?
.308 Win.
Sweet! Finally a popular media hunting icon that isn't magnum crazy. Bullet and weight?
.308 Win. Usually a 165 grain Partition. I think on this hunt it was a 180 grain.
Nice hunt! Randy, is it a necessity to call during the bow season to harvest an elk (bull or cow)? It will be my first time hunting elk this year and I haven't mastered the calls yet.

have you ever drawn a mountain goat tag in Montana? If not I have a great idea for one for you.
Yup, I have drawn goat in MT.
With bulls like that I think you will be doing more videos from here.
Yeah, this was the first of five trips in there.
Randy what's the price for a out of state in mt
A lot. I think it is now close to $900.
Those guys looked to being dealing with a bull down can’t blame them lol
hunt monte cristo in utah there is lots of public land
I have. See the episode at this link - ruclips.net/video/gbN7psf4dPk/видео.html
Randy Newberg, Hunter I have not been in the spots you were in in that hunt in the link but I killed my first deer in monte cristo

This was in 2010. I was trying all kinds of rifles at that time. Still shooting Howas.

Thank you for watching. I did not know there was much hunting in Pakistan. Best to you.
t h y
lol, you are funny Randy, lol, there is no hunting in Pakistan, lol
i want to hunt on that private land where all them elk live
For $15,000 they might let you. Or, for $600 each, you and some buddies can hire a chopper to do what we did. Good luck.

Randy Newberg, Hunter If this is Randy, thank you for all of your excellent content and videos. I'm just always skeptical, nothing personal.
most people don't have access or money to pay a helicopter randy, "we as public hunters" says the guy with sponsors and bottomless pockets.
Bring your money my way, you'll get a 370+.
unfortunately majority of your average public hunters, like myself, can't afford to hire a helicopter
