In our latest episode of Obscurama, Lawrie Brewster and Tom Staunton, discuss the films of Ben Wheatley, the famous British director of the Occult Thriller, 'Kill List' and, folk-horror 'A Field in England'. The success of Wheatley's early films heralded the arrival of a huge cinematic talent, or did it? With mixed follow-ups in the form of 'High-Rise' and, 'Free-Fire', not to mention flops such as 'Rebecca' and his attachment to 'Meg 2' - has Ben jumped the shark?
We don't believe so, but this very interesting filmmaker has produced not only some incredible films but some incredible climbs and dives along with the duration of his film journey! What happened to Ben Wheatley and can we discern any reasons for this incredible and sometimes peculiar career trajectory?
Our film and career discussion are from the humble perspective of two independent filmmakers, who talk about the works of Ben Wheatley, with a mark-sense of humility. We have enormous respect for this great British Talent, but even the best of us... can have off days!
Do you agree with our analysis? Or disagree? Let us know in the comments below!

Brilliant review. Always loved Kill List. The review reminded me about The Unkindness of Ravens, which I've just bought on Prime.

Love the intro. It takes me back to early days of showtime when it was a small box behind the TV and when I wanted to watch something on showtime I had to switch the showtime box button from left to right. Intro very nostalgic.
Just found this channel. I really like the movies being talked about.
Kill list I watched because it was on kermodes reviews. I absolutely loved kill list. The ending twist I never expected.
My only complaint “be it a minor one” I had a hard time understanding what some of the characters we saying.
But loved it none the less.
Ben Wheatley I look forward to seeing more from him.
Also, Panos Cosmatos I cant wait to see what he does next as well.
I loved Beyond the Black Rainbow.

I watched High Rise on telly a few years ago...erm. It reminded me of the weird films of the 80's. Like a Z and Two Noughts. I watched Free Fore on telly also, I rather enjoyed it and it deserves a rewatch. I went to wiki...quite eclectic. I love the Larry Oliver, Rebecca. It has Armie Hammer...so, it died a death and was gnawed up? Meg2....I see.

Kill List is superb! Really stayed with me. I'd highly recommend going back and watching Down Terrace (the film he made before) if you haven't already.

Interesting take. However, everybody only ever tries to explain the evil plan of the cult and sticks to the movie's events rather literally. That's only the surface story. My theory - and surprisingly I have never found any reviewer or article talk about it - is this:
What really happens is fairly simple: Jay is a traumatized var veteran. He has anger-management issues and violent outbursts, suffers from depression. PTSD patient so to speak. Over some fight, he kills his wife and kid and his best friend. That's it.
The whole movie plot with the cult and all is only the "justification" he makes up in his mind to justify his horrible deeds. Some form of vision or dream. Come to think about it: In several scenes in the movie, people tell him to WAKE UP! Most of the scenes have an eerie, dream-like quality to them.
Every victim Jay kills, is grateful, thanking him. They are all portrayed as evil people who have committed hideous crimes and deserve to die. This is just Jay's way of trying to justify his actions and keep his moral code intact. Gal even asks him to put him out of his misery. His wife seems to be laughing after he stabs her in the end. None of this would make any sense in real life. The cult is Jay's way of showing, that he had no choice but to kill. That he was orchestrated by a higher force to do it. That it was all just a great conspiracy over which he had no control. When he is crowned in the end, he basically succumbs to or embraces his mental illness.

Thoroughly agree with analysis of Kill List... though surprised no mention of 2021's In the Earth. A return to horror but wouldn't say on par with either Kill List or A Field in England.

Victim of success I suppose, not unlike Neil Marshal. Seems like your early work earns rave reviews and you grow, but somehow that growth seems to have affected what made the movies so great to begin with. Well that and it is hard to create something as it is, much less something good. Then trying to repeat that again and again?

I never understood Wheatleys quote on critics. I haven’t made a film before, so I’m not allowed to have an opinion?

It's interesting - and actually, it's a topic worthy of deeper discussion! Maybe we could produce a video about it - with filmmakers and horror fans on a Zoom or something!
