- We revisited Mr Joubert in Cape Town to take a look at his 22 year old Island III after it ws refurbished. See the interview with his explanation of what had been replaced during the previous 22 years (very little) prior to the refurbishment.
Of special interest was the state of the steel inside the unit where the real heat is felt. Interesting.
The refurbishment included:
1) New firebricks.
2) New door and glass seals.
3) New throat plate.
4) New rear grate plate.
5) Ten new grate bars. Interestingly, Mr Joubert had left the grate bars "open" (as one would for anthracite burning) which may have unnessecarily worn the bars. We serviced another Island 3 of similar age and only repolaced two bars. See the video of Mrs Beecroft's Island III.
The unit was also polished and flue was replaced.
