Amanita muscaria, toxic or edible? (Starts at 0:01)
For in depth information about the Amanita muscaria, this is a fantastic article. NOTE: This article states that no deaths have been attributed to A. muscaria, however since its publication a recently released study, "2006-2017 Summary of Mushroom Poisoning Reports in the NAMA Registry" by Michael W Beug, Chair NAMA Toxicology Committee, states a single death attributed to A muscaria (however indications there were likely other factors involved as well).

Are too many people getting into foraging mushrooms and is it a concern that we are teaching more people to go out and pick mushrooms? (Starts at 6:30)
How can I get involved more with the science and research, do I have to get a degree to do so, how do I find a mentor to help? (Starts at 10:30)
If you aren’t part of a Mycological Society or Mushroom club, head to the North American Mycological Association’s Website and check out their index of clubs all around North America: Namyco.org
Note: Not all clubs are NAMA affiliates, there could be clubs local to you that are not on this list.

Are the spores of toxic mushrooms toxic for me to breathe? Will I get sick if I have a lot of mushrooms around me and I’m breathing in lots of spores? (Starts at 13:40)
Cryptoccocus gattii articles: (Note, it is the natural wafting of the fungal spores in the air that have affected people, it is not associated with a specific handling of mushrooms, which makes the disease impossible to avoid for both city dwellers or forest folk.)

In France, you can bring mushrooms you picked from the wild into just about any pharmacy and they will identify them for you. Also, it's much more common to see a very diverse selection of wild mushrooms at local markets there. That is all the result of a society where foraging for wild mushrooms is very common and extremely popular. Aside from the forests being a bit more crowded in the fall time, it's entirely a good thing!

      Wow, that is so cool!
In Sweden, as least as far as my own experience is concerned, you can basically only find the common button mushroom in a reasonably fresh state, and also portobello. Most stores tend to stock shiitake and oyster mushrooms but due to low sales volumes, they are almost always in poor shape, which I suppose serves only to reinforce people's dependency on the button mushrooms. The sad thing with this is that both button mushrooms and portobello mushrooms contain compunds which are believed to be mutagenic, called hydrazines, and which can be difficult to completely get rid off even when cooking (although it greatly helps and eating uncooked button mushrooms is now generally accepted as being unnecessarily risky from what I gather). The swedish "department of foodstuffs" even recommends to not only not eat them raw, but to not exceed the average consumption of 2,5 kilograms per year.
It is sad to have to restrict your intake of mushrooms just because the healthier ones are almost never found fresh.
Of course you can mitigate that a bit by picking and even buying wild mushrooms like chantarelles when they are in season, or even growing your own mushrooms if you have the facilities to do so, but I still don't like that I otherwise pretty much only have the options of button mushrooms commercially. Kind of sucks, to be honest.
I think every now and then about growing my own mushrooms so that I have a steady supply and maybe one day ahead I will completely lose my temper, snap, and Just Do It.

When my family moved to the US, we would go on a lot of hiking trips, collecting wild berries, mushrooms, and other medicinal plants, so I feel very luck to have all of this knowledge passed down from my ancestors to me.

One night out camping in the mountains of upstate New York my friends and I picked a load of amanitas some red some yellow and we dried them by the fire and I believe I remember taking a lighter to the skin of them all for a minute or two and we ate like 6 or 7 big mushroom heads each. The trip was the best I've ever had in my life and I'll never forget it but that was the first and the only time I've ever tried them.

Amanita muscaria is quite blissful. It is known as the sacred soma of the Rg Vedas. Cut up a few small pieces and make a tea of it. First take a dramamine to prevent any onset nausea. I prefer to err on the side of accuracy of information. There are already so many fears for folks to overcome from long-held myths, misinformation, and cultural biases, when it comes to mushrooms. Amanita muscaria are a lot easier to cook safely than chicken, and a package of cut up raw chicken at the grocery store doesn't come with any instructions for safe handling or cooking, either. I follow the basic directions on p.234 of the Rubel and Aurora article that you link to in your video description, except I learned it as boiling the thin strips in 2 changes of salt water for 7 minutes each time, and then preparing how I want (like sauteing in a skillet). I consider A. muscaria real food for regular people -- at least for people that can safely cook chicken, too. But not everyone eats chicken, or wants to. At least with A. muscaria, even if folks don't ever eat any, everyone can appreciate how magnificent they look. Mushrooms are so cool -- happy mushroom hunting!

In an anthropology class I learned about plants that indigenous people of the southwest consumed. Many of them needed significant processing to make them "edible." Desert almonds, for example, had to be ground up and leached with water for at least a day to remove enough tannin to make them edible. Some plants were impossible for any of us to eat and I suspect that the native Americans had a different intestinal flora than we do. I have never eaten amanita muscaria, but I have seen people who say it is delicious when prepared carefully. Because it is so prolific at times I would definitely consider it as a survival food if times get tough.

In the Southeastern United States, we eat a green leafy plant called Polk salad or Poke sallet, which is a lot like collard greens or mustard greens. My Grandma would go down by the creek and pick this wild green. I remember her telling me that it had to be boiled a certain way or it would be poisonous. This is a Southern U.S. tradition. I find it interesting how this became somewhat common practice, but doing the same thing with certain mushrooms did not.

I completely agree how responsible people are about things like that, as well as how people tout it as a party drug. It's not a party drug at all. It pisses me off cause people will get it illegalized by talking about it that way. I jate it when you go to forums and someone is like how much should i take and someone says: take 30 grams not realizing that jist cause they ate some and it did nothing to them that the next person needs to take more. People keep landing in hospitals over it treating it like a party drug and taking bad advice from people that have done virtually no research on it at all.

Aminita muscaria is also medical, if prepared and taken correctly in the right dose heat drying can convert some of the toxic compounds to medicinal compounds. Studies have found that muscomol is a GABA receptor agonist similar to a benzodiazepine.should you just pick fly agaric and eat it as is absolutely not because the concentration of active compounds vary so widely and the variablity is not based on size or time of year.

In terms of wild mushrooms for food I have tried most edible types in the UK, very few I find are palatable really with the major exception of fried giant puffball, yes you can eat lots of different types but most have acquired taste. My father was a senior lecturer in Agricultural Plant Sciences ( mostly mycology ) some of the most memorable moments of my childhood were spent rooting around in woods & fields on early Yorkshire Mycological Society fungal forays in the 1970's. Late teens early 1980's I developed a very different interest in mushrooms, it just gets more interesting the older you get.

Well I have been thinking about it and I think I have a few suggestions for you. Use it to dye cloth, use it to color, use it as a dye. I am just trying to help out. I hoping for some new foraging videos soon. I have watch all of yours multiple times. Have happy mushrooming 🍄 .

After spending a few hours online, I decided to try it. I removed all the gills and just took the red jelly part and made tea out of it. I did feel a heavy buzz that was like a stimulant and sedative at the same time. I felt great like I was in a dream and then I fell asleep and had real crazy dreams.

A one off won’t kill you but ibotenic acid kills brain cells quite effectively. It is not converted via drying nor via boiling whether in acid or not. I suspect overuse will lead to Alzheimer’s or dementia like symptoms. The desire for a high is not worth the risk; there are safer psychedelic compounds.

Have you read Anna Tsing's "Mushrooms at the End of the World"? It's a really fascinating look at the intersections of a lot of different worlds around the supply chain of Matsutake mushrooms. .....yes, pine trees is the requirement to guarantee they'll grow . But locally at library they grow under an oak tree but pine bark mulch may be what had been spread under the canopy . Also noticed them growing under our tea trees (not camelia sinensis , not a camellia, just Aussie name for a tree ) elsewhere locally but with at least one huge radiata pine in the 20 acre area. In that situation they present as brown mushrooms of same shape and taste with odd normal red one here n there .

I've read that A. Muscaria in fresh form contains ibotenic acid (which is quite toxic) and muscimol (which is less toxic but still can cause a bit of stomach distress). By drying it, the ibotenic acid converts to muscimol and it can be eaten more safely than in fresh form for a interesting trip. the only problem with mushrooms is that the potency of the substances can vary wildly. so if you want to try it out for its psychoactive proprieties, always start off with a low dose to avoid unwanted results and make sure the environment you are in is safe and u have a lucid person near that can assist you if anything goes wrong. i've also read about boiling it a couple of times in new batches of water while discarding the used one and it seems it has quite a good taste and texture but never tried it yet as I need to read a bit more about this. also, the trip of these can't really be compared to psylocibin mushrooms but it can definitely be an interesting experience in the right dose and conditions.

Keep an open mind people, just don’t let your brains fall out...food and water is all around you if you are knowledgeable... need water tap a tree or vine, need food? It’s all around you, just need to know how to extract nutrients in order to survive. Stay dry, keep fire and build shelter when the zombies or aliens come.

Looking at the question in terms of broad vaguely defined bins is useless, and if applied to mushrooms extremely dangerous and irresponsible. Is fugu edible? If prepared correctly. You can treat anything with a deadly poison as edible if you know how to effectively remove the poison. But firstly the risk-reward is awful (a tasty bite versus brain damage or death). Secondly you don’t even identify the toxic compounds nor discuss how they might be removed. Third there is a lot of myths and antiquated misinformation about the toxic compounds in the popular and even scientific literature that will mislead people. For example there is a myth that drying the mushrooms, boiling in water, or boiling in acid convert ibotenic acid, which is more or less untrue. Ask any organic chemist if boiling an organic compound such as ibotenic acid can decarboxylate it and they will tell you no. Ask them if low pH and boiling will decarboxylate it, and they will tell you no. You need a specific reagent or catalyst to remove a carbon at that specific position. In the literature there is evidence that DMSO, water and heat will decarboxylate ibotenic acid more effectively. In short, if you want to shoot for that knife edge dose between excitotoxic cascade leading to brain damage, and having a a fun “safe” trip; that’s your prerogative as an adult with questionable priorities. But at least get the facts right and know what you’re dealing with.
