To me, BSG was always so appealing because it felt like Starsky & Hutch meets Bonanza in space. Apollo and Starbuck were the main characters who would go out and engage the bad guys and then go back to the Galactica which was like the Poderosa with Lorne Greene as father Adama. It was cool while still having that family warm and fuzzy experience. It was a very good show. A crime it didn't last longer.

At the 18:02 mark, you can see Herb wince when Noah was not only cussing at the audience with kids in it, but also kinda' insulting and belittling them as well. I wish I could have heard what Herb whispered into Noah's ear when he then put him in a headlock. It was after this that Noah really clammed up and pretty much only rudely texted on his phone the whole time thereafter, even making Richard have to lean forward to talk to the people on his left, as Noah was obliviously leaning forward himself while texting. He was an annoying dweeb of a kid on the original show, and he grew to be an annoying jerk of a man. What a surprise... :/

I don't care how long or great Sackhoff played the new version of "Starbuck." BOTH are iconic IMO and both are talented in their own right. The test will be to see if Sackhoff becomes like Dirk has, or if she can push outside the envelope and play different types of characters. Dirk's attitude is a poor representation of TOS.
The new series could have had male and female warriors who were tough, powerful, sexy, etc. But they chose to make it look like females were better than men. Too bad they had to go that way.

Richard and Herb gave fantastic answers! I almost wish they had been the only guests--- though Jack and Sarah held their own for what time they had. Jack's recollection of Lorne was so touching. I can grudgingly forgive Dirk his irreverent humour as it conjures Starbuck's image for the audience. I'm really disappointed in Noah. He was very well-spoken and sweet in all the other interviews/panels I've seen him in. The imbalance between the member's behaviour made it feel a little ramshackle but I still really enjoyed the panel. They're still such a great cast after decades!

I think the movie Noah was in "Sushi Girl" was a fitting role for him.. he was my least favorite character on BSG and to see him end up as he did on that movie was just so rewarding for me.. others may disagree.. but I doubt they would publicly admit it.. lolRichard Hatch was a wonderful person to meet, as you can tell in this, he LOVES to talk to anyone that will listen, he was talking about all sorts of stuff and even showed us his trailer for the second coming.. Dirk was always my favorite Galactica actor, but the line for him was real long so talking to him at length was out of the question, but he did manage to stay charming.and Herb was a real treat, just a wonderful person to talk to... and those were the only 3 from the original Galactica that I had met, I had a Super 8 film of the original movie for them to sign and all 3 said the same thing, "Where on Earth did you find THIS?" I spent years trying to find a projector to play it, but now I gave up and just display it

I reckon they had their best reunion together at the Birmingham NEC convention in the United Kingdom back in August 2005 (look it up on google) where it was the largest BSG cast reunion of all i think, except for Mr Larson himself. Stu Phillips, Noah Hathaway, Anna Lockhart, Laurette Sprang etc all showed up. Others reunions in the States might've suffered from the reaction to some immature convention folks sometimes or been too tired and whatnot. They are one of the best TV show casts mind you.

This got Fracked up in the 1980 version. Got worse when they tried the new version. What they should have done was let the Battle Star Pegasus been the remake. And made the show around that. Then have the a host of things that could happen. Like meet back up with the Galactica. Guest from the OBSG appear. Two battle stars out there kicking butt. The OBSG had feelings and some playful humor. It was heart felt in many ways. And Starbuck was a player The new stuff is more like a pissing contest to see who' winky was bigger and who jump who's bones first. The women in the old show were ladies and had beauty. In the new one they are rough and tough and seem to have lost that gracefulness a woman / lady has. It is sad they destroyed that show.

+William Wynn The female Starbuck was the worst. Like you said, the original Starbuck was a player, but he was also a professional Military Pilot. The 2005 female version was an asshole. If she'd been in a real military setup, she'd have been put in the guardhouse and dishonorably discharged very quickly. She was insubordinate in the extreme, arrogant and a whiner.

    • @sing4theLordJesus
      @sing4theLordJesus 5 лет назад

William, I know this is 4 years old but I agree 1000%. There was absolutely no reason to change the show's characters, make it more "dark" and "realistic," etc.
Some ppl will come here and say TOS was campy, which sadly it was, but it was MORE than that. I am tired of fans of the new version who think I enjoyed the cheezy eps. (I HATED THEM) or think I just want happy, funny, really upbeat eps 24/7. I DON'T. The bad eps make it look like it was just a kiddie show. If you can ignore them and the 1980 disaster, you will find some fine writing and acting. There are some heartfelt stories and relationships in there.
The new series may have some great stars and stories, but it made it look like men are wimps and only women are tough and powerful. I'm not a feminist by ANY means, but for gosh sakes, why did they have to make some of the main characters female? Couldn't they have male AND female warriors who are both tough and powerful? Why be one sided? And why be depressing? If you don't think the characters in TOS had despair, watch some of the better eps and see. They lost loved ones, friends, etc. They went thru hard times. It's not as "happy" as you might think. There is too much doom and gloom in the new series, too much realism. I get enough realism and despair just walking outside my door, watching the news, and seeing how ppl act IRL and on the internet.
Regarding some of the new series cast - I don't care how long Katie Sackhoff played "Starbuck". I'm sure she is talented and did a great job but the version she played and the version Dirk played are different. (I know Dirk has become a nasty old geezer in his old age, sorry to say.)
I will always call the "reimagined" version GINO (Galactica In Name Only). To those who love the new series, please let those of us who still enjoy TGS do so without sarcasm, laughter, or criticism. I don't expect everyone to love it, but I also wish there were more respect between us. If you like the new version great. Just don't expect everyone else to agree.
      Can we PLEASE do that?

Battlestar Galactica should have been two-hour movies four times a year like originally planned. This would have allowed the scripts to be better and the audience viewing would have remained high as it was a "special event" during sweeps week. But ABC killed the golden goose by forcing a series with no time to write quality scripts. The show could have lasted five years if they had stuck to the original plan.

I don't give a frack why people think nbsg was so great..other than the special effects, it was dank depressing and oversexes..classic was upbeat had aliens...and was fun.!

Then don't give a frack. The old one had its place, and the new one as far as I'm concerned was phenomenal. I don't understand why it's either one or the other with some people like you? As for Dirk's misogynistic belly-aching, well, Katee Sackhoff was a better Starbuck, is better looking, and a hundred times a better person.

Vern, if you love Sackhoff and the new series, great. If someone else doesn't, that's their right. Just saying.

It's interesting how Dirk Benedict is talking about how a character like _his_ Starbuck couldn't exist then (2012).
That's even true now (2021) especially with the Twitter crowd and the woke fad in Hollywood....
Unless it (a _BSG_ continuation) was independently produced.

I think Dirk really hates the new Galactica and the lack of humour in it, which is horrible. I haven't even watched it! I just give up with TV after the 80's.

He hates it because Katee Sackhoff turned her Starbuck into one of the great Sci-Fi female characters of all time, while he'll just be an * when all is said and done.

@@ohioexpax1592 That's only part of it. He also hates because it deviated from the original in so many ways. Not just feminizing characters. And again, in case you didn't get it the first time, I HATE THE CAMPY EPS. TOS was NOT always happy and upbeat. But it sure seems like the new series was mostly (if not always) depressing, dark and gloomy. Do we really have to have that much darkness in a series? Yes I know this is how the world is but do we need constant reminders of it in everything we watch?
Dirk is a poor representation of TOS, because of his grumpy attitude. But look at how Richard Hatch felt about it. (I know he was on the new series too, thanx.) Look at how some of the original cast felt. Except for Noah, LOL. He's a punk with a crappy attitude.
Edit - I realize it looks as though I am against women who are tough and strong. NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. I'm a woman myself (not as pretty as the ones on either series) but I've had to deal with some major issues too, and I've had to overcome a lot so I know about being tough and strong.
For anyone reading this - I'm NOT against powerful women, it just appears to me that in the new series, they make it look like men are not (tough, powerful etc.) but the women are. TOS had their share of both, and from what I saw of the new series, it didn't seem that way. Why not have some males and females who are strong? And NO I'm not a femininst, I don't have a masculine ego, etc. These are just my opinions (yes I know it's stupid and I suck, thanx.)

I loved the old one. I loved the new one. Why do you have to choose? One was meant to be campy; the other much darker. Variety is the spice of life.

@@ohioexpax1592 If some don't like the new series (myself included) let them feel that way. And please don't think they are being "masculine" or are male (bc I'm a female).
TBH, there is no way you could bring back the original cast due to their age, but you could bring the ORIGINAL version of the series back instead of the re-imagined, feminizing of some characters, dumbing down of others doom and gloom version we got instead (again JMO, you don't have to agree). It's great that there are some tough women in the new series, but how about some tough men (as warriors) too? A little more balance?
Also, since you also say you loved TOS you should know that it was NOT - I repeat *NOT* - intended to be "campy." They simply had some very bad scripts and did their best with what they had. I doubt that Glen Larson intended for it to be campy or dark. As I've said over and over, there ARE some serious storylines and not every ep has a happy ending.
I really hope you don't believe fans like myself enjoy TOS for the camp (I hated them). I enjoyed it for the few GOOD stories that were made, the fine acting, and the theme of hope instead of depression and despair. Trust me, TOS cast has moments of despair too. It's there. It upsets me to no end that so many fans tend to see TOS as just a comedy for kids. I hate the fact that there are some simply awful scripts the cast got. Some downright STUPID. But they did what they could with what they had.
I only wish the new series had a little more hope and a lot less realism. But I know in this day and age, ppl want realism, depression and despair. I'm just older and have seen too much of that IRL. I really hope nobody will think I want nothing but upbeat, happy, joyful eps in whatever I watch (I DON'T).

Noah's behavior sums it up - who cares?
I watched the original - gave up before the end of the first season because it was clear, they had no idea where they were going, literally and figuratively. It felt like a rehash of Bonanza except Ben Cartwright was now Adama, and the Ponderosa was the Galactica. In any case the only reason they had this panel was because of the reboot. You might as well have had a panel for Petticoat Junction.
