  • [Gandhi] spins every day for 1 hr. beginning usually at 4. All members of his ashram must spin. He and his followers encourage everyone to spin. Even M. B-W was encouraged to lay [aside] her camera to spin. . . . When I remarked that both photography and spinning were handicrafts, they told me seriously, “The greater of the 2 is spinning.” Spinning is raised to the heights almost of a religion with Gandhi and his followers. The spinning wheel is sort of an Ikon to them. Spinning is a cure all, and is spoken of in terms of the highest poetry.

The Internet is marvelous sometimes. We get to see things from places we could have never even imagined, and learn things from people all over the world. I don't have family, so I wasn't taught a lot of basic things. Not only has the Internet allowed me to learn those things, but also things like what is featured in this video. I am grateful for this chance to connect and learn from people of all different origins.

What a fantastic video! I'd known a bit about preparing cotton and spinning but I did not know about how long a hank ought to be and how much is required to make a meter of cloth and then a garment. Very informative, thank you!

Congratulations on your beautiful work of putting together this comprehensive video! I've been searching for such a video for a while! Thank you! Keep up the great work in teaching about self sufficiency, and empowering locals to startup this work. Local businesses are extremely important to public health and environmental health. I encourage people to start making clothing for people in their community (having a close relationship with the process and products and sharing it with the local community through teaching is a great blessing that socially/emotionally binds our society, through a relationship of transparency with local business and trust, people are more empowered and stronger. Some clothing dyes are carcinogens, and it's likely toxic dyes that pollute the waterbodies will be used less because of the connection between public and local business leaders.) For example: if monopoly Duke Energy executives lived near one of their toxic coal ash pits (byproduct of electricity), they probably wouldn't be drinking the water there. Here the state government is underfunding and understaffings the local environmental regulatory agency, and hiding the decision making about wastewater and air permits from the public. More health studies supporting why local business is important: slides under "Schedule" ehs.duke.edu/2017/. We need to reduce our overconsumption, unsustainable building (there are cob houses), and we need to improve our self sufficiency and inclusivity to make our communities stronger.
