I cut about 7 acres on my spread. I have a left hand grass scythe and a right bush sycthe. I have a stone but use a file to sharpen the blades. I sharpen the blade on the top side. I push toward the spine like one would sharpen an axe instead of away like your technique. I go really slow and carefully in plenty of light. I burnish the back of the blade to dress the burr. I was always told that toward the blade is honing and away from the blade is burnishing. I am using a file after all.

I actually look for reasons to use my scythe... been hanging inside my garage for sixteen years without using it... fantastic exercise by the way. I don't have the fancy tapered stone, I just use a flat version but it works fantastic. I dip it in the rain barrel :) wishing you wall and thanks for this video.
I have a scythe as well. Actually, it was my granddad's before he passed away. I had recently drawn a picture of what it looks like since I have no camera, otherwise I'd show the real thing. If you would like to see it, let me know.
@RockTheOcean4me Austrian scythe blades are sharpened by peening them on a scythe anvil with a hammer. Honing them keeps them sharp. All sharpening is only done on one side.
I just made a video about same subject but in our way, Romanian style:). You knew the oldest scythes are found here in our land and come from the Bronze age? Was also used as a weapon from the old times.

I have also seen ppl hammering to sharpen, is that possibly even better, harder cutting edge? Is two sided sharpening better than single sided ?
great video. Is it possible to scythe to a specific height of grass? such as a 3 inch height which is ideal for a conventional city residential lawn with cool-season grass?
i have heard that the workers at Grim ,Inc are very good at getting it sharp...maybe you have heard of them...they have been ion the earth since the beginning of life on earth...the grim reapers...lol

This scythe might work really good for my 100 foot stretch of ditch that grows up during summer months. I think I might get one.

I think the snath i ordered was made to short for me,it was supposedly from my measurments

Should you sharpen it after every use if not about how often?

No you dont peen both sides but you hone both
