I recently bought a radio with tubes so full of old cigarette smoke the tubes weren't even clear anymore. You couldn't even see inside them. The only way to clean them included rubbing off the lettering. I mean they were sticky dirty and even touching them to pull them smeared the silkscreen. Don't know if there's a way to preserve them or not when they are this bad.
