    Thanks Lindsay. " don't get these if you don't need paint". Ha! I'm going to start a chapter of WCPA. Watercolor Paints Anonymous. For Paintaholics like me. I think possibly these have some sort of filler in them. It's not excessive gum arabic because there is no shine when dry. I took a tissue and rubbed it over my swatch card and did get the tiniest amount of color on the tissue but it was noticeable. Don't care though as these perform so well and the granulation is awesome!

      QUESTION Hi Lindsey, I am a beginner and purchased these as well as receiving the Miya set for Christmas as I mentioned in another comment. I have cased your beginner tutorials to create my first three paingings and I wanted to mention that the cerulean blue in this set came hardened in the tube. I managed to wrangle enough out to fill my 1/2 pan that I got a set with a palette to fill with these. As you may know this color "cerulean blue" is used alot. I needed to refill and at that point the tube split....any suggestions, or should I just purchase another brand to replace. I did look on Jerry's for some options. Please let me know what you think.

Don't put them in your cart until you are ready to check out because once they are in cart you only have something like ten minutes to finish your order.

    Wonderful review! It is nice to find that diamond in the rough and to be the first is a real deal too! I have more than enough paints but for classes this would be great and so economical to! I bought the DaVinci Paints 37ML tubes for outfitting a class and that was a good way to go too. I try to go with single pigment colors especially when starting Adult students as I have found it leads to less mud than multiple pigment paints, not always, but the frustration of poor paint is not a burden to dump on any beginner. I am really enjoying your painting videos and I must say I avoided your channel for a long time as my wife is the "Crafter" and I try to steer clear of her bailiwick ! Thanks, Lindsay! The tubes look like Mission Gold and it is quite likely that some manufacturer in China just mimicked them (although I have not looked at/compared the pigments at all). Out of all those companies in China I find it's quite possible they started their own line, isn't it? And, funnily enough, politically speaking, Amazon does their advertising for them! The Chinese have always been a clever people!

    Tubes are very nearly the size and color of Mijello. I’ve got all of the Mission Gold sets and many of their single pigment line beyond the large set of their single pigments. I’ll check the Art Whales mixes against the blue label and the single pigment set. I wonder if these are seconds? The box is sturdy. The swatch sheet is very “Rubens”. A lot of complaints happened re: Cerulean Blue being dried up. Mine was thick, but certainly not worse than the earliest release of “Genuine Tiger’s Eye” from DS. Idk. My nine month constant light facing west test was good. 🤷

      Not always I finding lately with art supplies from eastern Europe and Asia, in those cases sometimes you get much better than you pay for. For western brands cheap price often means bad quality tho as they often have the stuff made in China and marked up. When you buy direct from the manufacturers on Amazon you can get a steal (until it gets popular anyway 😆)

    I was so excited when I received my art whale paints. While waiting for them I spent time making up a pallet in my mind placing all the colors where I wanted them to be and looking forward to my experience of painting. The second tube opened watery which was a pattern for about four other tubes. One tube was totally dry. I opened up the tube and attempted it to scrape out the dry paint hoping to reconstitute the paint with no success ended up throwing all of it away. After allowing time for the paint to settle I was very disappointed in the paints consistency because 50% of the paint had a thick film. And not easy to a mix. I am determined to make this work making this opportunity a learning experience. I really do appreciate your time and your diligence to find affordable painting supplies.

    You need to review the Marie's Master watercolor. I'm highly impressed. They are nothing like the previous Marie's lines. They are not as vibrant as these, more of a soft gentle watercolor such as Winsor Newton. Beautiful transparency, dilution, and finish on the paper. A few quirky mixtures is the only issue I have with it. Jerry's has them exclusively I think, about the same price point as Cotman. Individual tubes and sets available. Almost no reviews available. Allan Quesada has one though if you want a look.

    Man those look good. I’m trying to hold off. I’m in a good place right now and actually using a lot of my paints. Then I’ll feel ok about buying more! Those paintings look great, that sky! And I love the bird.
    Jerry’s has a Creative Mark folding palette that is somewhat similar to that R&L. Fewer wells, but more space for half pans. I have a couple of those cheap palettes with wells on both sides. So aggravating because I have to leave it open until it dries. I have a number of other nice palettes, but find I still go back to my first 2 cheap ones.

But I’m refusing to buy more until I actually use a good chunk of what I have. I’m savoring the thought of how nice it will be when I finally move on. ❤️‍🩹❤️ Just curious, have you ever refilled a not-quite-empty pan with tube color that is similar but not the same? Like, cadmium yellow hue refilled with Gamboge (sp?)? What would be the possible issues with doing this?

    These do look nice. I looked at their different sets on the American Amazon (we don't have this brand here) and I thought that the pan set looked so much like the Superior pan set, the one that comes in the metal palette. Looking at the comments here, I guess I was right and other people noticed it, too. Not a set for final work, but they definitely look like a nice choice for sketchbook stuff and playing around. And I completely love the packaging with the whale, appreciate that much more than companies trying to make their stuff look all fancy.

    I got an Art Whale pan set through Vine (I'm a Vine voice--we don't actually get the stuff for free, btw, we are assigned a tax value for each thing we order and we have to pay taxes on the things we order). Personally I believe these are made by Paul Rubens.

    • @jenthulhu
      @jenthulhu 3 года назад +1

      I forgot to mention my reason for thinking it's Paul Rubens. The set I got was packaged identically to PR--in a sturdy box, wrapped in a chamois cloth. And the pre-printed swatch paper is just like the one offered by PR in their sets. I realize that may be a thin reason, but I've never seen any other brand package like this.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 года назад +3

      Thanks for letting me know. I didn't know that. Thanks for your insight. The PR pans serm like they are liquid poured but the pans in the photos look extruded. That daid I'll dance a jig if when the 48 pan set arrives it is PR pan quality as I have been waiting for a sale on their 48 pan set.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 года назад +1

      @@thefrugalcrafter Aaaah--that would make more sense. I didn't realize they had the same packaging (I should have, as I have a Tingue palette, also from Vine). Do you feel like the quality of these paints is similar to the Artsy and Tingue paints in some way?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 года назад +2

      @@jenthulhu I don't notice a similarity (more than any tube to pan) between the art whale tubes and artsy pans but I am pretty sure the artsy 24 half pan, altenew 24 half pan in the metal tin (and possibly etched 24 set but I don't have that) tongue (because the outer cardboard box us identical to artsy) and doodle hog 36 set (not the other sizes tho, they are different and the company doesn't even know why lol) are coming from the same factory. If you compare your tingue and art whale pans will you let me know if they are the same? Another viewer said they thought these look like one of the superior 24 tube sets that are $70. Superior makes the artsy and tingue pan sets I am 99% sure. I feel like such a detective 😆

    So this is an update to my earlier comment after receiving my art whale paints, and let me tell you at first I was disappointed simply because I dont own any off brand paints, when i started i committed to quality, I used cotman until I saved for professional paint. And that's all I've had. But these colors are really unique, the blues and the earth colors are spectacular, I literally tried to get mud and all I ended up with was strong granulation, and really interesting color separation from the multiple pigment colors, very cool. Highly recommend.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 года назад

      It means that it probably doesn't have much humectant in it. Squeeze more paint to glue jt in and add a coup drops of glycerin or honey to it and it will attract moisture grom the air and not totally dry out or crack and fall out.
