In the source material it’s supposed to be symbolic of kings who aren’t ruling the realm well, in the sense that the throne is rejecting them. Maegor The Cruel was found dead on the Iron Throne with his wrists and throat slashed open with no assassin in sight, and Cersei had a dream where she sat on the throne and it tore her to pieces. Retreating into caves whenever the dragons bomb them then counter-attacking at night. This is when he truly makes up his mind that his daughter should be his heir. The daughter who finds the vaunted white hart. Two nice juxtapositions with the Stags. Otto tried to use the White Stag as an omen on his grandsons name day to suggest that it was a sign that his grandson should be the heir. But what actually happened is that White Stag seemed to choose Rhaenyra.
    Secondly, The King looked sad and impotent in his effort to bring down the Stag even though it was subdued and he was safe, he was unable to perform a clean kill. Whereas, Rhaenyra when attacked by a powerful boar fended it off and decisively put it down quickly. This compares their different styles as rulers where the King doesn't seem quite fit for the job. He's rotting from leprosy and the throne always cuts him as if it doesn't believe he belongs on it. Rhaenyra, although contrarian as her dad points out, has the energy and action of youth, including it's wrecklessness whereas her father seems much much older than his years.

Do you think that as Rhaenyra's best friend that Alicent should have least disclosed that she could be a potential wife for the king. I don't think all of the ownest falls on the king. In fact I think I'd rather hear it from my best friend then my dad. I also know that the king kind of lead her to believe that he was going to choose Layna which is why I believe that Alicent should have been real with her not only because they're best friends but also because it felt like at times they were more than friends and that just might be my interpretation

      The problem is not that he married into Hightowers but that he married a second son’s daughter who stood to inherit nothing. Alicent didn’t bring him any political advantage.

    • @garlantyrell6368
      @garlantyrell6368 Год назад

      But still, King Viserys made a Hightower his Queen, meaning that the marriage pact still brought all of House Hightower into the fold more. Lord Hobert is related to the King and Queen’s royal children by being their great uncle, I think. So he probably still pledged his full support and riches to House Targaryen more because him and Prince Aegon are related by blood. The marriage didn’t just bring Ser Otto and Queen Alicent into the fold more.

    Viserys is upholding Rhaenyra as heir mostly out of guilt over what happened to Aemma, and in doing so, he’s gone against centuries of tradition and law in Westeros.
    Viserys could very well change the laws, but instead he’s made Rhaenyra the exception to the rule. It worked well enough before he married Alicent, but now that he has a son it seems almost ridiculous to a lot of people for him to still uphold Rhaenyra as heir. Unfortunately, Viserys isn’t very good with difficult decisions, especially ones that cause great conflict.

    Big ass non-objective takes, points and explanations:
    -I'd say the intro is like the valyrian model Viserys is working on. It basically represents every Targaryen and their blood connections. Each medal is a character and the rivers of blood are their sons, brothers, daughters etc.
    -She has just one: Aegon. She's pregnant with the first daughter/second child: Helaena.
    -The problem with the war is that Daemon and Corlys started it without the king's permission. Viserys was already moving his cards, recruiting help from the Free Cities to avoid exactly what Daemon suffered anyway: a long, slow, frustrated conflict against well settled pirates in a war exclusively costly for the Seven Kingdoms. Vissy's solution would've been slow and not as epic, sure, but its not like Daemon had any quicker victory in those years. And... I think is safe to say that some lords woul definitely judge Viserys for aiding them now. Disobeying the king is no small thing. Daemon and Corlys are right now something close to criminals. Its akin to a general starting an illegal war without the congress/prime minister permission.
    -No one can have eggs or dragons freely. Or, at least, you shouldn't be able to hatch them/control them if you don't have dragon (Targaryen) blood. You can have the Velaryon, or Lannister or Baratheon or X name and also Targaryen blood and thus be capable of claiming an egg/dragon, just like Corlys' son at the end (Laenor and his dragon, Seasmoke. He can control it because he's also the son of Rhaenys, 'The Queen That Never Was' Targaryen). What Viserys means with that comment to Jason Lannister is something like "chill, you can't really offer anything of actual power or value to House Targaryen". The thing is... this precisely explains why Targaryen were so focused on incest and maintaining blood purity. You have these nuke lizards, the most powerful weapon in the world that only your blood can use... if you merge too much with other houses, to the point of your blood and their name being one and the same, then you lose that advantage. This already happened with the Velaryons, as Corlys' children can already control dragons because of his marriage with Rhaenys. Its fine cause Targ and Velaryon are cousins of valyrian ancestry, but even then, House Velaryon represents another whole political entity and in the event they have ambitions that differ from the Targaryen... then you can see how its a problem that they already have dragon blood in them and why some Targaryen kings wanted to avoid that. But again, Velaryons are kinda of an exception because they have valyrian traits and Targaryens resorted to them when incest wasn't an option (or to avoid too much of it).
    -We don't know exact details about dragon reproduction. Supposedly they can change gender as conveniency, but yes, they put eggs after reproducing.
    -I'm gonna try to explain Otto's motivations and the entire white hart thingy: Viserys is being emotional in the entire 'naming Rhaenyra heir', because of what happened with her mother, because his conflict with Daemon etc. A king, technically, can name an heir, but there's also precedents and cultural traditions that all people expect to be respected, just like Jason Lannister and other nobles expected Aegon to be the heir just because he's the male son of the king. This is proper of the andal tradition, for example. I like Rhaenyra but its not true that her being the named heir makes her automatically the rightful heir, but the tradition also doesn't make Aegon the rightful heir. In the end it depends on your point of view and on who has enough strength to make his claim the right one. As Varys said: Power resides where men believe it resides. Its a shadow in the wall. And Otto is trying to use this entire 'white hart' thing as a way to make Viserys change his named heir to Aegon, because: 1) Aegon is Otto's grandson 2) Otto is being preassured by his older brother (the actual Lord Hightower, we can see him in the beginning) and 3) because Otto understands that other lords will expect this because of the tradition I mentioned, so if Viserys doesn't change his mind, then you have conflicting claims and half the kingdom may want to respect the king's word (not that important cause westerosi kings aren't absolute monarchs) and the other half may want to uphold traditions (irrelevant to those that give value to the king's word). Otto tried to paint the whole situation as: if you, Aegon's father, encounter the white hart on this day (Aegon's second nameday) then surely the gods want him to be the heir. Viserys doesn't find the white hart, Rhaenyra does. In the end this is just bs (as per the Varys quote) and its just a white animal lol If anything I would consider it a foreshadowing to the Baratheons future reign, as they are more connected to this land than the Targaryens.
    -Laenor's dragon is Seasmoke.
    -They probably didn't show the fight because the Crabfeeder was a weak dude, sick with greyscale. He was more of a tactical headache than a big fighter.

    Viserys is forever ruled by his overwhelming guilt for killing Aemma. So he tries to compensate by putting Rhaenyra above all else, doting on her. In all fairness, he should have named Aegon as heir, according to laws and customs and to avoid a civil war. Yes, Rhaenyra would have been hurt, but she would get over it.

    It's so frustrating watching ppl blame Otto for "pImping out his daughter" when pretty much every noble marriage in Westeros was arranged. What other choice did he have? Like yeah, Otto is guilty of finding the best prospect for his daughter instead of marrying her off to a fisherman lol. That would be the duty of any man in a medieval feudal monarchy. Rhaenyra's position gave her the security to do whatever tf she wanted. Others like Alicent didn't have that luxury. "It's Otto's fault he married his daughter to the king cause the king's daughter might get jealous & paranoid" is not the ownage of Otto ppl think it is. It speaks more about the character of the daughter. Mfs have no understanding of basic politics blaming Otto for everything, thinking it would be sunshine & daisies if Viserys married Laena as if Corlys didn't spend his whole life complaining about the Great Council stealing his wife's throne. You switch Otto with the head of any ambitious noble house and the outcome is the same. The issue wasn't Otto or Corlys or anyone. It was a weak king making a bold & unpopular decision that he had no power to enforce.
