Absolutely! All graphics we're sharing at this stage are preliminary and pending final review. For example, this talent tree was developed in close partnership with Dragonsteel, but it's still awaiting some final notes from Brandon (and possibly some final gameplay tweaks from playtesting).
Oh, we weren't going to miss squires! You can take NPC squires, but there's also rules for PCs becoming squires. Either for powerful NPC Radiants or for other PCs!
@afischergames that was my immediate thought. I have a player who hates using magic. I can see another PC making her a squire if and only if to get the healing from investiture. Just "I know you hate make shut up and breath in the stormlight" lol
That's our plan! We're delighted that Brandon is using the RPG to debut a lot of canonical lore, but we also want to make sure we're not diminishing the impact of future novels (or painting him into any corners, lore-wise). The Fifth Ideal, and epic/Herald-level play in general, is good material for a future supplement.
@@BrotherwiseGames that's cool. Of course, it might also be fun to see future supplements that feature Investiture users from other worlds, since we have been seeing so many world hoppers appearing on Roshar. Awakeners like Vasher/Zahel and Vivenna, Dor users like Galladon who is with the 17th Shard hunting Hoid, Allimancers and Ferruchemists, who we have seen several of including the one that gave Ulim to Venli.
@@anonymoose2386 would be cool. Probably start with Scadrians, the Allomancers and Ferruchemists, since the Mistborn books are more well known than Warbreaker and Elantris. In setting terms, a Surgebinder is more powerful aand versatile, at least compared to Mistings and most Ferruchemists, because they don't require a medium or catalyst that the Scadrians do, the metals they burn or use as metal minds. And that's not taking into consideration the advantages of Plate and Blade. But in an RPG, it's all about how you play and where you bulk up your skills.
I definitely understand not adding the Bondsmith here. But I hope it could happen in a supplement, in case a table wants to do a story set in a different time and have a Bondsmith. Or at least give an NPC version.
We have some guidelines for how to handle Bondsmiths, and this is something we may explore in a future supplement when we've seen more of what Bondsmiths can do in the novels!
I'm already anticipating, if this RPG is well received, how the system could be expanded to Mistborn. Misting paths that let you heavily Invest in becoming skilled with one metal and a Mistborn path that lets you more broadly but shallowly get access to multiple or all of the metals?
I started reading Proactive Gaming by Johan and Tristan Fishel, and I am seeing similar ideas concerning goal setting as a collaborative process between the players GM, as well as using the completion of goals as a "leveling" system I'm looking forward to seeing more
With each order being fleshed out, will the rulebooks define the ideals of ewch order more fully than what we have thus far from the novels? So far, we only have specifics on a few of the Order's oaths
One catch is that they're not exactly the same, like "I will protect even those I hate, if the cause is just," vs "...even if the one I hate the most is myself." One thing that's a bit odd is that many of the first Radiants we meet didn't speak aloud, "Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination", yet they bonded spren anyway. Unless you're playing bloodthirsty & homicidal, killing unnecessarily, or being really submissive/non-heroic, pretty much anybody could swear the 1st Ideal whenever they want. The biggest obstacle to the later oaths was generally figuring out what the oaths ARE, yet the rule book would need to spell them all out, so it's more about "walking the talk", like protecting someone who's defenseless, or someone I hate - though the GM is going to need to work an opportunity into the plot, someone the hero hates, but isn't just an enemy to be defeated, & a situation where they're being bullied unfairly.
I think a cool usage of abrasion would be to increase or decrease friction on your weapon, depending on whether it is keen or impact. Increasing friction on an impact weapon or decreasing friction of a keen one would cause either to be harder to deflect and thus reduce the opponents deflect value by however much investiture you spent on your weapon or simply cause a corresponding flat damage increase.
Hoping to see officially ran campaigns played by Brotherwise and Dragonsteel employees (maybe GMed by Dan Wells) that could later be turned into canon stories (possibly similar to the Adventure Zone comic adaptations).
Do you need to level up each time to reach a new ideal? And how long (how many sessions) are characters expected to play until reaching max level / max ideal, etc...
Is Goals, and progressing towards them "freeform". The idea of someone having a grand goal, and because it is written down, they do 3 things and then it happens? Or is it very much a dm goes "I think you can check off a mark now"
Yeah, the GM tells you when they think you've done enough to check off a mark. We encourage them to quickly check in about PCs' goals at the end of each session and see if any progress was made. I briefly hinted at this, but completing a goal is sometimes realizing that you needed something different all along, or maybe realizing that the goal was way bigger than you originally planned and that you've just completed the first step and need to plan out more subsequent, sub-divided steps. We tried to keep it organic and collaborative to fit with whatever creative goals PCs want to set for themselves.
Depending on how much or how little one leans into the "a million jedis running around" idea, this may actually support Ars Magica's troupe-style play im a dnd-like environment. Players can have several characters each, one of which can become radiant, but the others stay heroes, and even hirelings round out the cast...
Will there potentially be additional adventures released in the future? I've been DMing for 10 years, and I'm pumped to run a game on Roshar, but I work a busy job and premade campaigns are a godsend in savings me time!
Both hate and love how similar the example goals used here are similar to the character I made on the online character maker. was inching towards dustbringer too
I'm itching to know more about Willshapers as well! All but Bondsmith have rules. I expect we'll see a whole lot more about the various Orders in the next novel, given how much about them will necessarily be in these rules.
I am really curious as to what the level cap is, or if there even is one. I'd assume there is a max level, so my guess is that it's either 20 levels like 5e, or maybe like 30 levels given the number of talents each tree has. Unless you're not supposed to be able to get every talent in a Radiant path, you'd have to be at least level 26 to do so right? 1st level can't be a Radiant path, and there's seems to be 25 talents for each path, so if you wanted to focus all-in on gaining all of the respective talents of your order then you'd need to be at least 26 (27 if/when the 5th ideal becomes an option and functions as a talent like the rest of them.)
From the vibe I got from this I don’t think there will be a level cap, you can become as powerful as you need to to complete the story you’re trying to tell, long or short
We've taken a lot of care to balance heroic (non-Radiant) characters against Radiant ones. Radiants will always have access to more fantastical abilities, but the heroic paths have a lot of useful staple abilities. Because Radiant ideals take both a talent and goal, there is a big opportunity cost in pursuing them. While Radiants swear ideals, heroic characters can use their goals to pursue gaining companions, patrons, shards, or other powerful rewards.
One big catch is that you can't bond a Shardblade or wear Shardplate once you bond a spren, you need to swear higher Ideals to get them, which probably takes a lot longer than acquiring a deadeye blade. Of course, instant summoning the blade instead of next-turn, & avoiding all the downsides of transporting & infusing Shardplate are pretty awesome.
@seeravv Providing a less smarmy reply now that I've gotten a bit of a look at the rules, non Radiant paths have a lot of 'be better at X' mundane thing in them. So if you want to be good at fighting, the solder path is almost mandatory. In other words, a Radiantay defeat a Solder, but the Solder cam out fight the Radiant. And if you don't have access to Stormlight that can matter. Or if you compare to someone who mixes them.
It makes sense that Bondsmiths aren't included because there's only three of them, but it just makes me wonder, is there any plan to supplement that later in development, or will they just always be unavailable?
If I get the GM or collector tier, can I run a game with people who don’t back at all? I know it would probably be sharing the guidebooks, but would it work for just me to have any of the materials?
I have a quick question. When leveling up, does the player have to choose between putting a level into their radiant path OR putting one into their heroic path? Or do they level up simultaneously? Super excited for this either way! Thanks!
It's clear to me from the video that you only get 1 or the other - that's to balance out non-Radiant characters so they can be better at some things than a Radiant.
I just noticed that both the 3rd and 4th ideal have 13+ as a level requirement. Is there a reason it's on both considering one is a requirement for the other on the tree?
I know there's still a lot to be revealed about some of this, but I'm curious if there will be some sort of downside to acting against an ideal. Similar to you know who in words of radiance.
4:26 I thought only bondsmiths, windrunners, and stonewards explode with stormlight when they speak ideals? The reason for Windrunners and stonewards being they are so close to bondsmiths.
I don’t understand why the fifth ideal is in a separate rule book. None of the ideals have been sworn in a thousand years, I know the fifth ideal is something powerful and important, but by having it not in the core rule book is really disappointing. What if we wanted to use this system to play Knights Radiant within the space age of the Cosmere rather than just the setting outlined within the base game. I am really excited to play this game, but having the fifth ideal in another book feels really bad and seems cash-grabby to me.
I think it's because what the fifth ideal is hasn't been revealed yet in the story. I imagine once we get that in the books, there will be a future supplement that has it.
It's most likely to avoid Stormlight spoilers. The 5th ideal may be something that changes the audiences understanding of either the Rosharian magic system, or realmatics in general.
They also don't have Bondsmith in this since well you aren't supposed to be playing as Dalinar or Navani, at least in these modules. I assume there will be a Silver Kingdoms/Heraldic Epoch supplementary book that will detail that as well as Fifth Ideal stuff. They will probably also release those mechanics as free pdf inserts for the core rule book similar to how FuturePress releases free inserts for their game guides when a DLC comes out.
