This just shows how much Phelps knew his limits and his sporting IQ. You can see that he realized he was too far behind in the turn and he turned on the gas. Started to breathe less. Passed some people but couldn't get to Cavic. He knew that he wasn't going to make it if he was swimming normally. That last stroke he took was in a gambling attempt that Cavic would just dolphin to the pressure plate and that it would cost him a bit of time. Michael's last stroke gave him the impulse he needed to have more reach and strength to register on the plate. Also, you can see that he was in desperate need to deliver it, because the form of his arms were not ideal for the butterfly, but adapted to just touch the wall faster. Truly remarkable.

The difference of 0.01 second is imperceptible for your eyes, that's the function of the plates. And second, do you think all the organization was thinking "Ok, if Cavic beats Phelps, we have to change their times"; because is that, or they're flash to do all that between they touched the wall and the time was in TV and got official (about 1 second)
