      It's because he knows his team is not chosen thanks to the NHL therefore he does whatever he wants to do to a player he may not like which is Stone here. Benn was being responsive to NHL's rigged games.

      @@andrewchristie2970 certainly a major penalty and GM. Only cross check like I I can think of was Wilson on Panarin a few years back. But what do I know? Only a VGK fan, former juniors player and a USA Hockey Ref. Can I add being Canadian to that list too? It was a dumb play and will likely get a suspension as well. Warranted and done. Go back to being a couch GM

      Crosschecking is one thing. Crosschecking a guy that's down? That's trash. Crosschecking a guy that's down after you look down at him and realize you have an opportunity to skate away or go for crosscheck? That's pure stupidity. Crosschecking a guy that's on the ice, after that pause, in the NECK?! Later tater... there's going to be a game or three suspension.
      Maybe you need to brush up on your understanding of the game a bit.

You are 2 games down, that would be 0-2 down, in conference finals, playing at home, in the first period, in front of your home fan crowd, you have a "C" on your uni.. and you do that. Yep.       It was 5 and a Game Misconduct. Not a Match Penalty. Though, it should have been called a Match Penalty. The difference is "intent to injure" and I'd say that qualified.

      Technically the sport has advanced immensely. Statistically, no other professional sport has grown as much in average fan attendance the last 30 years (doubled).
      I do agree on the calls. They are awful, many times a disgrace. These things should be fined so high, year long suspensions, or players kicked out of the league. Any other sport, players would be kicked out for dangerous, senseless plays.

    Benn is infamous in Detroit for his crosscheck on Larkin that was VERY similar to this. Glad to see him actually suffer the consequences for his stupid and cowardice play.

      @@KashDarby I’m surprised there’s not any videos of it on here. It happened during a faceoff and all the refs missed it, but Larkin left the game and was injured for quite awhile after. Being a Michigan native, the Red Wings broadcast showed it several times in a replay, but it seemed that nobody else picked it up.
      Same situation though, guy down on the ice with his back to Benn, and he shoves his stick into their neck.

    Yo I was camping when this happened but I could hear the description on the radio. I couldn't believe it. Usually I'd say the stuff happens on the ice shouldn't bring legal action but this move was so dirty it reminded me of the Todd Bertuzzi incident. One of the dirtiest plays I've ever seen. And from a captain in the Stanley Cup playoffs no less! Unbelievable. This will haunt Benn forever.

    Finally the refs got it right. Back in the 2000 Finals, Game 6, Devils vs. Stars, Jason Arnott of the Devils, cross-checked a young kid across the jaw. Thing is, the kid's jaw was trying to heal from being broken. And Arnott was sitting on top of the kid when he did it. The kid was lying helpless on his back. Arnott got only two minutes, and the next OT period, scored the Cup-winning goal. Should've been given a game misconduct, if not a match penalty.

    Similar situation happened in Indonesia when a teenager attacked another teenager who was already down in a helpless position and send him into a comatose state. The video of the attack went viral and caused public anger. The attacker is now in jail and his father (a government official) was fired. Benn is lucky that Stone seems OK, however a lawsuit can still happen. NHL should prevent crosschecking to the neck area as it may cause permanent disability.

    I don't blame Benn, he figured he would be allowed to get away with it, as anyone who watched Stamkos do the same thing against Toronto without getting a penalty let alone being thrown out of the game and suspended could attest to. That is on the NHL, you want to prevent incidents like that, call it every time and not just on the rare occasion that you feel like calling it

      it's also a matter of game state. If you are down 3 goals with 5 minutes left anything can be cause for brawls if you win by 1 you just play the game and try to win especially when there is no real injury.

    All hockey players play with an abundance of adrenaline and are bred to be aggressive. Then there are times when they know their goose is cooked and they lose it.
    Benn lost it and is lucky Stone wasn't seriously injured.

      Very few hockey players ever make a play like that. Apparently the breeding works more effectively on some than others. This is not like a hard open ice hit. Stone was down and out, and Benn decided to try to decapitate him.

      He lost it and should get a big suspension starting next year to make others realize the NHL is not going accept disregard for player safety.

      These sticks are rock solid and I am amazed there is not more injury caused by these strongly made technological sticks.

    You know what's also frustrating is that there was a referee right there when Benn cross-check Stone while he was down yet he did not put his hand up for the penalty instead another referee who actually saw it put his hand up from further away. That referee needs to get his eyes checked because he's blind as a bat.

    Maybe I'm bias because I'm a huge Stone fan, but Benn should get suspended for 1 game - yes, he essentially was with a game ejection 2 mins in. But that was 100% intent to injure with a non-hockey play.
    The Stars arent coming back from 3-0 down anyways, the league should make a statement that even Captains and stars are held to a different standard.
