Great reaction! This song was the encore, so Geoff had been singing for a whole set. You really can't go wrong with any of the OG Queensryche. I would recommend "Take Hold of the Flame" live from the same show, or anything off of the album "Operation Mindcrime" (which is arguably the greatest prog metal album of all time).
Yeah, learning his tesitura is straddling upper and middle baritone was eye opening, and i first heard about it when I was doing bel canto choral stuff in college for ballet and opera performances (UMKC conservatory, though my actual BA is in history). The smooth and consistent 5th octave work round this point of his career was near unparalleled and the projection/power of his belt was godlike. I can get up to the D and E5s he did in this song and Take Hold of the Flame with almost no strain, but I can't fill a big room with it and I can't do the straight tone jumps he did live, I almost always have to gliss up to get there. Shame him and Wilton had the big legal falling out, though having seen both the current line up for Queensryche (Casey Grillo from Kamelot on drums and Todd la Torre on vocals) and Geoff touring with Avantasia all the guys can still bring it live, even after 40+ years.
Remember guys - this Song was Released 1983 ! QR changed Song writing and Vocals in Metal. Dio Chose this band as Support Act for the Shows in Europe 1984 - DIO & Queensryche together was the best Show i‘ve Ever Seen. Competent Reaktion & greetings from Munich
finally another person reacted to Queen of the Reich. Everyone does Take Hold. This song is by far my all time fav. Great hook, vocals and the drumming is one of my favorites. Rockenfield was so damn good back then.
Scott is one on the must UNDERated DRummers, ever. lve seen "The Greats" over 34yrs of shows. Morgan Rose too. (Super Group, l saw them on this Tour and Everyone after)
Scott has long been one of my favorite drummers. I don't think there has ever been another metal drummer who hit the drums as consistently hard as he does. Looking head on, its all just elbows flying everywhere...he is really fun to watch and great to listen to.
Queensryche is phenomenal! Scott Rockinfield on drums, Chris DeGarmo on lead guitar is considered one the greatest of his time. And Geoff Tate is an absolute legend!
I agree 💯! It'd be awesome if Geoff could reunite with the rest of the guys and bring us at least one more album & some good live shows before they're all too old. They're certainly not getting any younger!
That whole show is amazing - I was actually living in Japan when this came out, my dad was stationed at Misawa AIr Base in Northern Japan and my friend picked up the video release of this queensryche show at the record store we used to go to- that and the Alcatraz Tokyo show - both of those shows fucking amazing - but that was my introduction to Queensryche and Yngwie Malmsteen w/ Alcatraz. Great shit!
From a hard rock/heavy metal perspective, it must have been hard growing up in New Zealand in the 70's and 80's before the internet. Sure you got all the big label stuff, but I bet it was tough getting the newest more obscure bands, the fact that the name Queensryche was all you knew can testify to that. Watching you be stunned by Tate's singing brought me back to when I first heard it in '85 when I was 12. AWSOME!
Glad you’re doing Queensryche, although definitely wouldn’t call them a hair metal band they’re more early progressive metal. Awesome video as always 🤘
Still over 30 years later, one of the best live shows I've ever been to when they did the Empire tour and played Operation Mindcrime in its entirety! Rockenfield has long been a great live drummer
scott rockenfield was one of the drummers who made me want to learn the drums back then… what a beast!… and queensryche is still one of my all time favs… so much finesse…
Always fun to see people's face after the opening vocal belt of this song. Queensryche is also known for the tone of their snare drums, which we hear better in the Take Hold Of The Flame Tokyo performance. Also they have what to me is one of the greatest concept album of all time Operation Mindcrime.
One of my favorite bands ever! Actually, The singer(Geoff Tate) has a very low, dark speaking voice. He is one of the best rock/metal singers of all time in my opinion. I saw him recently singing live and he still got the voice! Scott Rockenfield on drums is, to me, one of this genre most underestimated drummers. He is an amazing drummer and I've always held him high. The things he does composing his playing to fit the songs and in harmony with bassplayer Eddie Jackson as a unit, is just mindblowingly good. Especially on their album Operation Mindcrime.
Love your reaction to Queensryche! I still feel that way about them three plus decades later! All the guys were very young here. Just beginning. Geoff was 25, and the rest of them were 20 or so. Very tight! Best live shows I've ever seen! Geoff's voice was very high then. On their first two albums he sang mostly in his higher range, but he is actually a baritone. In his prime he had about a 4 octave range! Beautiful voice, and total control over it! Michael and Chris were well-known for their gorgeous dual guitar solos! Drums are my favorite instrument, and I really liked hearing your comments about drumming. Always fascinates me even if I don't grasp the full meaning of what's being said, I get a the idea. Eddie's bass really supports Scott's drumming beautifully too. To hear a totally different side of QR, listen to "Silent Lucidity", THEN venture into their highly acclaimed concept album: "Operation: Mindcrime". Its one long story told in flashback. A complicated and well-presented story of social unrest, manipulation, drugs, mind control, betrayal, love, loss, regret, etc. Very compelling story. Its best if you have the lyrics in front of you, and listen to it in order, all the way through. You won't be disappointed! (NOT hair metal, btw. You're forgiven. ☺️) Hehe, I was a Journey fan too, but when I discovered Queensryche, they ticked EVERY box for me, and they've still never been surpassed for me. FYI, Queensryche continues to this day, but only has two of the founding members in it now, Michael, guitar and Eddie, bass. I recommend listening to the first 5 releases or so by the original lineup of QR, and THEN getting into the current QR, if you want. But for me, the original band members were absolutely musical magic together! Hope to hear more QR reactions from you in the future!!
Only just found this one. Tate was insane here. He was only capable of singing like this for another 3 or 4 years before smoking and wear and tear started eating into his extreme top range. The scary thing was these guys were babies here. Tate was about 25 the other guys around 20/21. By the time of the Empire album, they were right up there with the very best bands in the world. Check out anything off Operation Mindcrime, especially the live version of Speak, it really emphasises Rockenfield's drumming.
Seen them live about 4 times..greatest live act I've ever seen and I've seen some great acts. Honestly I enjoyed their evolution all the way to hear and the now frontier and then it was over. The Empire tour was the best, seen them play the Joe Louis Arena and they played the whole Empire album and the whole Mindcrime album in one show...that was awesome.
Andrew- King of the memes! Another excellent episode! This song displays their early, strong Maiden influences, in the best of ways- vocals, to drums, to twin guitar leads. Superb.
Queensrÿche is usually that band you pull out when you want insane vocals from the era. Metal has some of the crazies singing after all (distorted guitars eats up so much of the sonic space). But the rest of the band were absolutely on point back then. Especially DeGarmo.
If you like guitar harmonies listen to NM 156 and I have to suggest roads to Madness as well. If you want stripped down Raw Talent listen to their unplugged session. You're welcome
Steve Harris: “Bruce even said to me that Queensryche had made a better concept album that ours, with Operation: Mindcrime... Not long after that, Bruce did a solo album. He was struggling within himself. We didn’t realize how much until later.”
That was actually pretty fuckin tight. I always had a soft spot for empire and mindcrime but this is the first for me on the early stuff. Maybe i better educate myself.
Great reaction! Gotta do a reaction to “Take Hold Of The Flame” from this same concert in Tokyo! I think “Operation: Mindcrime”, “Breaking The Silence”, and “Walk in the Shadows” are all must listens for just getting into QR!!🤘🏻
For me, this is the greatest Progressive Metal band of all time and yes Scott Rockenfield is one of the greatest drummers... If you are a QUEENSRYCHE fan you know that Scott plays a significant role in the arrangements behind Geoff,'s vocals and Chris DeGArmo writing... 🎵 🎶 🤘
Queensryche was my first concert in 1984 (on this tour) in NY when they opened up for Kiss. I was 14. I saw Queensryche again in 2022 in NY with Judas Priest.
Geoff Tate was a llittle flat there LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my favorite band going to High School in the late 80's Oh man what a good time (now that i know it) Big Thumbs up!!!
I always compared Queensryche to a mix of Pink Floyd meets Judas Priest. They weren't hair metal by the way. Their breakthrough album, at least in the US was Empire. I recommend Silent Lucidity, Jet City Woman, Another Rainy Night and Anybody Listening. Geoff Tate has an amazing voice.
Scott is an outstanding drummer. His solo instrumental stuff with Rockinfield/Spears is really good and his drumming on 2016's Condition Human is awesome as well.
Brilliant band. Not hair metal, but of the same period. Scott Rockenfield always has brilliant beat choice, doesn’t overplay and always tasteful. Operation Mindcrime is an absolute classic album that should be in every rock fan’s discography.
Check out some videos about Scott's snare tone on the album Empire. That snare tone is legendary and apparently people have tried over the years to recreate it and haven't been successful. I think even the original producer and/or engineer couldn't remember exactly how they did it, but they were unsuccessful at reproducing it. The album as a whole is great, but that snare sound brings a lot of strength to the over all sound of the album. If it were to be remixed with a different snare sound, that album would suffer greatly.
I can tell you this Andrew (big Rush fanatic here), one of my first concerts in High School was Metallica with opening act Queensryche who, just like yourself, I was totally in the dark on. They completely won me over. and saw them a few times thereafter. And yes, Geoff Tate's vocals blew me away as well. Hope you dive into more!
Queensryche toured with Maiden back when they first started out. Heard rumors Dickenson was actually jealous of Geoff because of the ease he had hitting the notes. Not sure how much truth is behind that, but they were definitely both amazing at what they did in their primes. Still are on good days.
Best metal band most people never heard of. I was about 11 when my older brother brought this EP home ... still remember listening to it on our little tape deck
Queensryche were great in 80s & even into the 90s. Geoff’s vocals are incredible. He had the same vocal coach as Anne Wilson (Heart) and Chris Cornell. If you like harmony lead guitars, you should check out Thin Lizzy, especially songs like Bad Reputation, Emerald, Opium Trail, Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed, Black Rose, and of course The Boys Are Back in Town. Brian Downey was a terrific drummer. Thin Lizzy were a huge influence on bands like Iron Maiden.
Saw a good comments on recently found reaction to the live Take Hold of the Flame. Fits here. While Steve Perry's voice was shattering hearts, Geoff Tate's voice was shattering windows.
@AndrewRooneyDrums at some point you really should do yourself a favor and listen to the album Operation Mindcrime in full. Queensryche's legendary concept album that still holds up to this day.
E isso tudo ao vivo!!! Me diga, quem faz melhor ao vivo??? Eles foram simplesmente os melhores! ❤ Geoff Tate é incrível! Amo a formação original de Queensryche ❤
I did security for these guys back in the day.. Instantly enjoyed hanging with Michael Wilton, Eddie and Scott good dudes. I highly recommend you react to these guys doing "Take Hold of the Flame" from the same show. Then dive into stuff from Operation Mindcrime and Empire.
@@purplekat5864 It was tough.. Geoff was a real douche everyone. But his wife was the tour mgr so nothing anyone could do about it. The guys in the band I remember would go anywhere, where Geoff wasn't, so when they eventually fired him, I was just surprised it took so long, cause this was back in 01'. Kelly had replaced Chris on guitar. Kelly was pretty laid back and cool too. MIchael was my favorite to sit and chat with. Real down to earth guy.
@@ryant3600 I've met the guys several times, but obviously not on your level. Mine were in meet & greet situations, and then at a fan club event where there was a bit more interaction. They all seemed really nice. Michaels wife ( this was 1998 I believe) was super nice and helped clear the way to each of the guys so I could have a big collage thing I had made signed. Since each of the guys were pretty tightly surrounded by other fans, I was having a hard time getting through. She was just very helpful and gracious. I'm sad to hear about Geoff though. 😔 Susan seemed to be very involved with the running of the band business. I wouldn't be surprised if resentments, misunderstandings, and hurt feelings built up over time and eventually things fall apart. Just speculation though. The band, especially Chris, has always been pretty private about whatever happened behind the scenes. And I don't blame them. I've heard a couple things, but I would want to keep those personal things private too. I wouldn't want to endure endless public discussions about my inter-personal relationships either. Sigh, oh well. The music stands regardless! The songs will never diminish!
If you’re impressed by them on this first album (and this live is absolutely incredible for sure) then you have to check out anything from the next three albums. Everything is insane, and gets better and better, and I would say the drumming is probably the best on the album “Empire”. They move away from the Maiden/Priest heaviness into a totally unique Progressive style all their own. But, that dude could sing like that for decades. He still does very well live, even 40 years later. Shame on you for not knowing any Queensrÿche. Yeah, you’ll love their dual guitars on everything. Until De Garmo left.
Queensryche was often compared to Iron Maiden in the early days, but they are considered one of the founding fathers of prog metal (along with Dream Theater).
Actually . . . Along with Queensrÿche; _"Very often fans and critic credit Dream Theater for creating a whole new genre of progressive metal music in the late '90s/early '90s, But the truth is Fates Warning were doing it years before us."_ - *Mike Portnoy* / taken from liner notes of the 2005 expanded edition of the Awaken the Guardian album. There were others before Dream Theater as well (do a search for): "mavearworx: Witnessing the Birth of Progressive Metal - Part 1 of 2" I hope you enjOy and discover many other bands :).
The MOST overlooked note about this band. They were never a bar or club band. They recorded the EP and local record shop owners helped out by selling them out of their store. This got them noticed by the labels and signed before they ever performed live in front crowds!
To be clear. The term "Hair Metal" was meant as an insult. A "relegation," if you will. It was to highlight the only "positive" aspect of a (particular) band. As in, "Oh, them? They're hair metal." Bands such as: Poison. Slaughter. Bulletboys. Pretty Boy Floyd. Would fit this category. Just to name a few.
@Andrew Rooney Drums Dude, where have you been? Lol Both Queensryche and Scott are 2 of my faves. I dug his style since the beginning. They have so much good material. You should check out Take Hold Of The Flame next.
Good reaction I hope you do more queensryche take hold of The flame live in Japan and silent lucidity and eyes of a stranger check those ones out I think you'll love those too
Anyone who doesn't have Queensryche in their top five has been sleeping on Queensryche their whole life
This is baller
Geoff Tate top two for sure , amazing control of his voice.
Amen brother! Nough said, Mic drop 😂😂
First four is all you need. Classics!!!
Now you have to go down the rabbit hole. Their album, Operation Mindcrime is a concept album masterpiece from first note to last.

You're right. "Masterpiece" is the only word that can be used to describe Operation: Mindcrime. Nothing has even come close since it was released.
That’s Geoff Tate on lead vocals. He’s unbelievable in his range and power. Welcome to the great, one and only Queensryche!
Great reaction!
This song was the encore, so Geoff had been singing for a whole set. You really can't go wrong with any of the OG Queensryche. The entire Operation Livecrime concert is a must watch.
totally agree with take hold of the flame with electronic drums on parts of the song.
Gotta agree with you on that. Operation Mindcrime is one of the best prog metal albums ever. Well, that or Scenes from a Memory.
@@michaelk8642Scenes is awesome too!
What'll blow your mind is that Geoff is not a tenor. He is a -baritone-.

Judas Priest with Ratt opening up was pretty awesome too ...
Queensryche's first two albums are hard to beat. They are fantastic.
This is top notch
The musicianship in Queensryche is top notch.

I'd put Tate's scream in the beginning up there with Bruce's opening scream in Number. two title holders IMO. legendary shit
Saw a good comments on recently found reaction to the live Take Hold of the Flame. Fits here. While Steve Perry's voice was shattering hearts, Geoff Tate's voice was shattering windows.
BRILLIANTLY SAID
@AndrewRooneyDrums at some point you really should do yourself a favor and listen to the album Operation Mindcrime in full. Queensryche's legendary concept album that still holds up to this day.
E isso tudo ao vivo!!! Me diga, quem faz melhor ao vivo??? Eles foram simplesmente os melhores! ❤ Geoff Tate é incrível! Amo a formação original de Queensryche ❤
Queensryche is incredible…
I did security for these guys back in the day.. Instantly enjoyed hanging with Michael Wilton, Eddie and Scott good dudes. I highly recommend you react to these guys doing "Take Hold of the Flame" from the same show. Then dive into stuff from Operation Mindcrime and Empire.
Ryan, you lucky dog!! I envy you -- what an experience!
This is the original band before the break up. They were brilliant musicians and writers. Geoff
Tate was an incredible vocalist.
Pd.- Queensryche The Fathers of Metal Progressive!! ❤
Top 10 fav bands. No autotune. Check out Operation Mindcrime..the best concept album ever. Geoff is still singing and touring.
Time to visit that rabbit hole my friend!
Although I know the band's name from the 80's, this is the first song I ever listened. Amazing guitars, cool bass, awesome vocals and drums.
Actually . . .
Along with Queensrÿche; _"Very often fans and critic credit Dream Theater for creating a whole new genre of progressive metal music in the late '90s/early '90s, But the truth is Fates Warning were doing it years before us."_
- *Mike Portnoy* / taken from liner notes of the 2005 expanded edition of the Awaken the Guardian album.
There were others before Dream Theater as well (do a search for):
"mavearworx: Witnessing the Birth of Progressive Metal - Part 1 of 2"
I hope you enjOy and discover many other bands :).
Best thing about this was they were all around 20 years old.
What a recommendation! I have always loved this performance. Geoff tate is a killer vocalist. That intro screams “react to me internet”
Yeah this is hot stuff
more queensryche please!!!!
They earned their dinner unlike most nowadays ❤
Check out "Scott Rockenfield - Queensryche - Eyes of a Stranger - Rockin The Rivers 8.9.14" for a over the shoulder view of his playing.Super tight!
I saw them open for Dio in Seattle on this tour! Incredible!
Awesome
Sometimes heavy, then prog. Realy like this band.
I was a freshman in collage when their debut EP hit the states. I wore the grooves on that album flat. Early 80s were a magical time for metal.
Scott Rockenfield is so amazing and dynamic. Check of the song Take hold of the flame. From the same gig!! Thank me later
Operation Mind Crime from beginning to end ......repeat 😂 🤘😎

You must listen to Operation Mindcrime the greatest concept album ever. The first 3 records are just incredible.
The era that i found QR... just amazing... saw them open for Metallica... one of the best live bills i've ever seen...
EXCELLENT!
The hihat/bass clamps were available then. Clearly, he enjoyed the reach over 😂
