  • What are the current wiring rules in NZ?
We use the AS/NZS 3000:2007 Standard - Electrical Installations wiring rules in New Zealand, not the AS/NZS 3000:2018 version!
Watch the video for a quick explanation.
    Cheers,
    Sparkydave

I am a bit jealous of you guys down there, in Germany we need to pay an initial bill and then every year a fee to be able to read the rules we have to work with, thank you VDE...

AS/NZS is Australia New Zealand standards, Australia must use 2018 version, and yes it costs us HUNDREDS of dollars to get even online access to the standard and even more to get a hardcopy of the standards we need to use, maybe should move across the ditch to NZ :)

@@Ressy66 It is not free in NZ. We pay few hundreds to get a copy of the rule.

All cited standards (pdf versions) should be free in New Zealand if you're a licensed electrician/apprentice. I'll upload a video on how they can be accessed 👍

I have a question, does the main power line coming from the road connect to the meter box first then to the homes switchboard or is it the other way around?...also, when I was young Im sure I recall our house had a copper metal sticking up out of the ground, do all houses have these?

Regarding a NZ electrical safety cert, what is your opinion on an appliance that is hard wired at its site, removed from the site and repaired then returned and reinstalled. I was involved in a debate as I have been asked to complete a safety cert with the repair being " part of an installation". I have said it's not part of an installation, its an appliance. Or is a hard wired appliance part of the installation but a plug in appliance not? Thanks

When calculating maximum demand, sockets are always a rough estimate of what maybe plugged in. Compared to fixed appliances always need to be calculated at the full rated value.

From australia, its crazy that we still have to purchase these books and that it all hasnt been incoporated into a phone app that is updated as new rules are updated. Not sure about fees in nz but we pay hefty fees to electrical unions and licensing companies here in aus. Its pretty ridiculous if you ask me that we are working with books from 2007 and well before.
One system they automated was electrical certificates which we consistently pay per job obviously to get their money faster.

You can find the full AS 3000 pdf at the usual file sharing sites though seeing there's no guarantee of its authenticity it might not be a good idea to risk your career or life on it!.

it is... the current Standard is 2018 ver
however the government only passed the 2007 one or we call it cited the 2007 one
so by law , it is illegal to do work following 2018 one....
but 2018 one suppose to be better than the 2007 one....thats why there is a new one.....
i am new to 3000 too, i only know 1 thing like in 2007 one , you can use 2 core wire to do lighting and Earth is not needed
in 2018 one it will require you to have earth to lighting even if you dont need one...and people will follow the 2007 one becoz adding 1 wire for many job = $$$

@Jack Ha this is future proofing for lighting which should be the case. Its really not hard to run 2c&e.

@@JackHa apart from the auckland rat race cowboys, majority of lighting is ran in 1/1.5mm 2c+e. people would be stupid to not run an earth, especially if it was illegal not to do so. if youre risking your license and fucking over future sparkies/homeowners for an extra couple bucks on cable you should find another trade.
