- My Great Grandparents tell what it was like growing up in the early 1900s in the Appalachian Mountains. At the time this video was made, my Granny was 93 and Grandpa was 91 I hope everyone will enjoy some of their stories of life in Appalachia.
This is the kind of thing I LOVE!! Two elderly sweet people telling their stories!! Walking history books.
You can learn a lot by just listening to our old people. They have a lot of wisdom to pass on, if you will only just take the time to talk to them.
My Granny always said never be ashamed of your roots and always be proud of your family heritage. I'm a proud hillbilly myself
I think the thing I found most fascinating was the southern sayings that made the way the old folks told their stories so much more colorful. "I was as hungry as an ol' bitch hound with ten sucking pups.", "I'd as soon be in Hell with my back broke!", "She's been so sick, she'd have to die to get better." "He looked like he'd been et by a wolf , and crapped off a cliff." " It was so cold, I was shakin' like a dog trying to pass a peach pit!"
WOW! This is very interesting and priceless! It's people like this that hold the true history of our country- and way better than any history book in school can offer! thanks for sharing this with us!
To me this is the true heartbeat of America. God bless your great grandparents and God bless you... We need to save Appalachia and save the mountain tops.
This is so great. You see the love these two have for one another. It's so sweet, the way he keeps touching her leg and arm. Little things like that means a lot.
Yes it does, They both lived to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary..Mamaw lived to be 101 and Papaw was 99...They had that special kind of love that lasted through the years.
My husband is from the Smoky Mountains around Asheville, a little small town called Weaverville. His Grandpa on his Mama's side was a couple months shy of 101 before he died. They still grow their own food there...family still lives on that 47 acre mountain at the foot of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's so beautiful there. This is what it sounds like when we go to his Aunt Lucille's house. She has lived in the cabin her Daddy built 75 years now...she was born there...never left. I would love to live there...we do visit a lot. It's a different way of life...simple way of life. I'm going in November or December, long to breathe that air and listen to some family stories. We were in West Virginia a couple years ago, that where my Husbands Daddy was born...Bluefield, West Virginia. I saw towns just boarded up. My heart goes out to people who lost everything.
A priceless oral history and family treasure. You were so wise to make this recording. Pass it on to your children and grandchildren. Thank you for sharing it.
mad2 My pleasure, It's a shame some people don't have time to sit down, listen and preserve our family heritage. Cause when they pass on, they take that wisdom and history with them.

I helped my gf do something like this for an Appalachian Studies class in college. I love the way one question can lead to a myriad of memories. We spent hours just enthralled at their recollections. Listen to our old timers, before the knowledge and wisdom they possess dies with them.
I'm really glad I made this video! If you will take the time to talk and listen to our old folks, cause if you don't when they die all of that wisdom and stories goes with them.
my ancestors are from Appalacia ,and I lived there for 5 yrs , and the people there are really good people, I have fond memories of those hills
Possibly more than you thought. Great people! My people are the same. Respect them, please. They, as in the uneducated populous, have no idea how great these/those/us are.
I am a proud "hillbillie" and always will be. I live in Europe now but I am proud of where I came from.
Kids today need to count their blessings and listen to this, they didnt have time to play and mess around as kids back then

Thank you! They both taught me a lot and helped make me the man I am today! I'm proud of my Appalachian heritage and my mountain roots, I don't care if people call me a hillbilly, I consider it a compliment.

IT BRINGS tears to my eyes how sweet they are with eachother after all the years.This is how it should be with men and women.Guess it's lost these days.We are spoiled today with all our modern stuff. I'm no exception, divorced after 16 years lost the way in this community. But found a new girl who show me what is important in this life.Believe me it's NOT MONEY!!!!!!!!!! I love their dialect, the way they add music to the English language. Both your grandparents remind me of mine, except they live down in rural Mexico, but they carry the same attitudes nonetheless.

I remember asking my grandma about her life and she spilled some major tea about my mom and her family...my mom got so mad that she was telling me about their life , but I was glad to know alot of things about them..I do have a good thing to say, some of them were into art and making things ..i guess that's where I get my artsy side
