hollow is my favorite character because he experiences something you don’t usually get to see from a perspective like his- immense, overwhelming change, to the point where you completely lose yourself and everything you thought you knew. his little mind experiencing the significance of the entire planet is genunely too much for him to comprehend- and he just melts away, back to his original self. reminds me of zima blue in a way. at least that’s how i interpreted it
I love this scene so much. I interpret it as Levi reminding the creature of the balance of nature, and its place in it. It had become too greedy and Levi brought it back to its senses.
the way i see it is levi is the embodiment of change, adaptation and hope. even though levi is mechanical, and we perceive technology as stagnant, they change throughout the story to become something they hoped to be through their own agency. hollow is meant to be an extension of kamen's nihilism and self doubt. kamen uses hollow to escape into, he drown himself around him and hope he never has to escape into the real world. hollow obliges, but is utterly defeated when he attempts to overpower levi and is shown the world is ever changing and its diversity. kamen is no longer able to hide within hollow because hollow is a fake delusion he created to escape his world and his consequences.
I love how this show take inspiration from different things. I see some sprinkles of Spirited away and Annihilation here. Yet it stays unique and independent
This main villain creature is packed with an excessive amount of horrible features and gave me many ideas which I will explain in detail if my comment isn't automatically deleted as usual. If so, I am taking this somewhere better instead.
At first, judging from Kamen's prioritization of authority figures (such as the company he works for) over the people in his life, the giant mistakes he makes out of fear for disappointing the company and losing his livelihood, such as rerouting the ship and causing the whole scenario, compared with how he works for the creature to overfeed it out of proportion as it regularly feeds him in return what looks like crap for mind control really gave me the idea that this is a metaphor for exploitative class relations. Then when his pain was unbearable, he begs it to stop the pain and the creature basically absorbs him into its womb where he rests in fetal position. This looks like it's about enmeshment with a manipulative mother figure and the escapist, self destructive desire to return into the womb which is present in some troubled people as claimed by certain figures in psychoanalysis. This imagery is often found in films when the mother character doesn't let go of the son and let him grow psychologically into adulthood. (Like in Peter Jackson's Dead Alive) At the end, when the robot has its moment with the creature leading it to shrink back to its natural size (not sure what that was about yet), Kamen is holding onto it like his child before it leaves for good. This looked more like an image of his failure to let go and grow out of his destructive infantile nature, his id, if you will. (again, inability to grow into an individual, always functioning as a servant to authority figures).
@@freshbornmute2752 i think its a rebirth for kamen after he and the hollow he corrupted experienced a revelation about the world. ITs not about greed and consuming as much as you can, but living in balance. We see kamen helping out at the new outpost and the hollow lets go of everything it took by force and returned to the size it was when it was using its symbiotic "slaves" to only gather berries for him, not by hunting other life forms.
It quite poetic that this Levi was originally programmed by Fiona and she put a lot of herself into it and this particular Hollow was in a symbiotic relationship with Kamen which took some of his instincts as it's own. In a way in was Fiona's victory in defeating this Hollow, after all Kamen abandoned her to die in Demeter before she could even go into cryosleep.

One of the best scenes in any show ever. The hollow is literally mind-melding with the planet itself and the entire history (or “memory”) of its creation from stardust to the formation of life. It’s too much for the hallow’s mind to handle and it essentially breaks it. The score to this scene is so powerful and just perfect
@partyrock4144 it is. Hollow tried to fuse with Levi, who was fused/a growth of the fungi from the flowers, which are connected to the planet. And when it did, it got the memories OF the planet. It's evolution. It's cycle. How it came to be. How all life on it was connected in a balance with all the rest of it, in a sort of symbiotic existence, as the season showed in so many ways. And as Kamen changed How Hollow was as they came closer in their symbiotic relationship, it fusing with the planet changed it. But Kamen changed it in human ways, to evolve, to get stronger, to dominate. By melding with the planet, it adapted to how it was. Which was balanced, in sync with itself. Which put Hollow to his natural state, back in balance with the nature it exists in
I love that moment at 4:05. Kamen is left alone, with his pain and self-hatred (Hollow) in his arms, and finally lets go. In the clash between connection (Levi, Vesta, nature) and isolation (Hollow, Kamen), the majesty of true connection strips hatred and fear from power. And yet they are spared, for true connection (all life) knows well about pain and suffering. They were blasted by kindness and they fell apart. Beautiful.

I don't know if you can even call it a blast. It didn't damage the soil, or send anything flying. It didn't harm the human who was right in the middle of it. It didn't even kill Hollow. The effect was more a surgical disintegration - a careful, precise and very selective form of destruction. I would interpret that whatever Levi is, or is connected to, chose to intervene with some overwhelming command of the planetary biology. Some collective awareness of the planetary life, usually too dispersed to be aware of such minutiae as the actions of individual animals, was briefly drawn to focus fully upon the actions - and so acted, intervening by seizing control of Hollow. Not to punish - that's a human concept - but rather to return things to their proper order, setting Hollow back into their proper role and ending this disruptive form of symbiosis. that wasn't a laser. that was the essence of the planet connecting with a creature native to that symbiotic planet able to connect with life forms physically and telepathically
@@briishcabbage568 if your definition of laser is an intense beam of coherent monochromatic light (or other electromagnetic radiation) by stimulated emission of photons from excited atoms or molecules, then said 'laser' didnt harm Hollow as much as it precisely deconstructed the symbiotic imbalance that was Kamen connecting with Hollow.
@@Ziaotic It was a beam of light firing in a precise, straight line though. Edit: Nevermind, not a laser but not for the reason you're saying - it fires in a cone.
It’s not so much a laser or a blast as it is a… visual representation of the Hollow being deconstructed. Notice how it doesn’t harm the ground or Kamen or the baby Hollow. For something so forceful and fast it’s a very careful process.

Nah, after everything it's just an animal. It interfacing with a human is something it was never meant to do, but it isn't uniquely malicious.
Too cute to die, and tbh it was all Kamen's fault it ever did anything naughty.
wonder if it has the scope of dune in later where they are all after the one planet
The cult we see at the end seems to be both bearing cybernetic augments and markings of foreign infection. Perhaps a radical fanatic movement towards Naturalism is going to be a catalyst for a shift in wider human civilization.
@@ozymandiasramesses1773 Yes such an interesting way to end the freaking first season.. But what worries me is that a 2nd season has not been greenlit... =( Is there anyway we as fans can try to make the second season happen?!
Get this in your life. Lit cartoon.
The 'Hollow' seems conceptually lifted, and adapted from the JapAnime 'Bleach', which is (in my analysis) so friggin awesome. Levi god a heavy zampakuto. The concept of mycelium splicing with AI seems, well... has someone done it already?
Perhaps there is something a little prophetic about this? AI reminding those of the greed to stop?
If I remember correctly hollows in bleach did not do this. Also it's only called "hollow" so we have something to call it other than "that weird fucked up telepathy creature"
@@mythcat1273 As I recall in Bleach, the hollows eat each other to 'evolve' and take on their pray's strength, as well as eat souls. Although they were also mindless, the 'fuckd up weird telepathy creature' certainly IS that, and only seems to feed from the sadness and emotions of... broken beardy guy... ghad he's so weird too. Telepathic Bloat Toad is so nightmarish...
@@JT-si6bl it's definitely not mindless it's an animal bro
@@mythcat1273 Good - you got me thinking: 'mindless' as in blind greed, as opposed to 'mindful' considerate equilibrium, like the planet is in constant flux where Levi struck a great balance.
Ok but I can't get over the fact Levi can just. shoot a laser. Like, she can just DO that. Probably would have killed Hollow, too, if it wasnt for the weird regeneration creatues on that planet have.
that wasn't a laser. that was the essence of the planet connecting with a creature native to that symbiotic planet able to connect with life forms physically and telepathically
@@Ziaotic If a massive beam of light shooting from a single point, focused to fire in a straight line, isn't a laser then I dont know what a laser is.
@@briishcabbage568
if your definition of laser is an intense beam of coherent monochromatic light (or other electromagnetic radiation) by stimulated emission of photons from excited atoms or molecules, then said 'laser' didnt harm Hollow as much as it precisely deconstructed the symbiotic imbalance that was Kamen connecting with Hollow.
@@Ziaotic It was a beam of light firing in a precise, straight line though. It's effects aren't directly important here - this is science fiction, even if mostly focused on the wildlife being believable - it is still a concentrated, straight beam of light that is being fired. If you showed that to someone and asked if it was a laser, they'd probably say yes.
I was probably wrong with saying it "would probably have killed Hollow," but still. Big blast.
Hollow is a true Lucifer.
Sad Scene 4:02
Interstellar type energy. ❤
Perhaps you should’ve put the spoiler warning before the statement “Hollow connects with Levi.” /:
The title is nonspecific enough as it is. If you googled something like this in the middle of the series it's entirely your fault.

I.. what? Huh? What?
All my homies hate hollow
Hollow my favorite character
WTF?
(warning spoiler) hollow killed way too many people to just be shooed away...
But hollow is so cute. Also Kamen is equally if not more responsible
