this is super late, but the entire key situation here is in queen for a day when varian is asking rapunzel for help with his father. when he pretty much just grabs onto her arms and tries to pull her away from the room to come help out of desperation, nigel calls the guards in to throw him out and pretty much starts/lets the rumor spread that varian attacked rapunzel. so we can blame that on nigel. the issue beyond that is rapunzel letting that rumor spread even after she found out about it.
