When i think bang for your buck, i think a 2005 toyota corolla with 60k miles for 1500 quid, ya can get well over 100k miles out of it and is what i call value for money.
We were looking for a cheap, practical and extremely reliable car earlier this year. After watching Matt's videos on cheap, reliable cars we went for a 2011 Civic, 1.8 petrol, manual. Absolute beast of a car. Ridiculously practical. The rear seats fold completely flat or go vertical which is insanely useful. It's basically a hatchback with the load capacity of an SUV. I'm 6'6" and fit in it comfortably. 40mpg and runs absolutely perfectly. Also, it looks nice but attracts no attention so we're happy leaving it wherever. I'd 100% recommend one if anyone wants a well priced (£3500-4000) car. Also, cheers to Matt for the recommendation!
I've had six Hondas - three of them were Civics. A 4 door US built sedan, a 2 door coupe and the Sport model, which was the best. They gave me a total of 13 years trouble free, happy motoring.
Hey. this is shocking for me because I am also 6'6 (longer on legs) and never thought i would fit in a Civic. I am going to try one soon in a month when I will be looking to buy. Any height related issues since?
No issues. Have done 3 hour drives in it without any problems. That includes myself, 3 large adults and a big dog in the boot. They were all comfy. Would thoroughly recommend one. Consider the minor facelift (2010+?) as the suspension etc is a bit more forgiving or the major facelift (2012+?) if you want some more tech. It's honestly the perfect car in so many ways.
@@SeaJayBelfast That's amazing, thanks for the reply. I will probably try both of your suggestions, but I am already leaning towards the 2012+ since i like the look & tech in it a bit better. I found some out there with 90k miles, full SH and a solid trim (mostly ES) for around 3.5k - 4k, which is a good deal i would think
£25-£35 grand cars are still a ridiculous price in my book. I honestly think a good Mercedes or BMW in the £2,000 to £5,000 ball park can be very reliable and low cost to run on a daily basis for UK or cross-EU runs.
@@Globetrotter-1 - I’m thinking about parts though. This is why I’ve shied away from Mercs, BMWs and Audis all these years - just too expensive to maintain when things go wrong.
Very interesting content Matt! More of this, please 🙏🏻. More for car enthusiasts. Your credibility is already earned, and your presentation style is down to talent and thus enjoyable.
Interesting. But I'm not currently in the position to associate 'bang for your buck' with £38K unfortunately. Currently looking for a replacement for my aging GTV for up to 20K though.
I guess a point to remember is that although heavily depreciated luxury cars have serving costs that shouldn't be hugely higher than lesser marques, if things break, replacement parts prices can still be reflective of the original price of the car eg best to follow Matt's advice from his videos to buy something like this where you can have, at the outset, a decent reserve fund for the inevitable expensive parts replacement/ labour. For me, the BMW 7-series would be the one I'd have. They'll never look dated to my eyes. Amateur Question : Best to buy something like these cars from a dealer so that you have some form of useful guarantee that it will work beyond the first week ? Note : I know nothing
Buying an old MB, BMW or whatever can certainly be a risk but not inevitably and you can mitigate it by buying carefully. I have run lots of old MBs of all kinds for years and it has been no more expensive than anything else - IF you buy the right cars and IF you know a good independent specialist to maintain it. And both of those things aren’t hard to find if you look carefully. Eg I bought an 11 year old CLK 500 which we ran as a second car for 3 years. Sounds scary? Of course it was thirsty (a 5 litre V8?) but not outrageously so (upper 20s) unless you had a heavy right foot. But it had done under 40k miles and had a full history, with every invoice. And that big scary engine and gearbox were very nearly bulletproof - yes, it would have been expensive if anything went wrong, but it wasn’t likely to. And my local MB specialist charged £350 for an A and £450 for a B - never, ever, go near an MB main dealer who will charge more than double that. And if you’re a car lover, you really should have a V8 once in your life - and make it a Merc, it’s a fabulous engine and a joy to drive.
Someone I used to work with (who raced go karts and knew his stuff) bought a smart looking BMW 530d and it was not a good experience. And this was from a main dealer. He reckons it was a well thrashed but very well detailed fleet hack. Guarantees are certainly worth considering but check what they cover. My brother bought a Toyota Yaris and the clutch failed in the first week. The dealer fixed it under the 3 month warranty. Good luck!
How about a ‘tales from the trade’ series? Awkward moments, disastrous deliveries, crazy customers. The motor trade never failed to entertain me when I was in it.
recently bought a SSAYONG TIVOLI for the missus. she loves it, great mileage plenty of tech. and its only cost me 8k for a diesel with 43k miles full service history defiantly bang for your buck.

@@garethsaunders1260 I guess I had the misconception that to run it on petrol the battery needs to be charged and on longer trips you’d still have to charge it
@@linas5222 ah, I'm with you. That's the amazing thing about the REx, if you are so inclined, you can run it as an EV, if not, just keep filing it with petrol. I do about 85% of my total miles on electric, the rest petrol.
Great show as always Matt, BMW F10 M5 is a real bargain, 560bhp for £30k , bought one 2 years ago some can be had for as low as 20, heard some horror stories about reliability but touchwood its been fine for 2 years. My heart still comes out my chest when i plant my right foot.
Tbh if i had one i would buy a high mileage one and replace all the common faults for maybe 5k on top of the 17k for a ragged one, and have the peace of mind that it should not spin a bearing randomly.
I would say most of these bargain cars are a bargain as long as nothing breaks. then you bust into tears when your apologetic local independent garage says "are you sitting down?" "Yes mate, proper fuct it is, the warning lights are on and everything, we can get a reconditioned exchange unit in for £1,900 plus vat, but then there is fitting which will require disassembly of the dashboard and lower suspension".
Biggest issue with them is that it's impossible to use most bi-directional aftermarket scan tools with them, you have to use specialist computers. And you need these sort of scan tools for even the most basic maintenance....
A good friend of mine bought one as a present to himself and he put up with it for nearly two years but he got fed up with the bills, one after the other. I can't talk though as I got myself a Jaguar XJ-S 5.3 litre V12 H.E. (laughably stands for High efficiency). 1982. Money pit. In fact if you have a moment, a money pit that went to the University of Money Pits and graduated with honours in applied Money pits.
Buy an old BMW or Mercedes and you'll probably be able to find an independant specialist conveniently close to home. With rarer marques like Maserati, not so much.
Hi Matt, on the day of Charlies Coronation at the age of 67, I bought my first ever "not that sensible car for £18,000, a 2015 435D Gran Coupe 435D XDRIVE M SPORT finished in Estoril Blue metallic with full Ivory Dakota leather interior, 74,000 on the clock and I just can't get enough of it - pop it in Sports mode and hit the peddle and it's like engaging warp drive - I was originally looking for a decent 6 Series Gran Coupe after seeing your video on them but couldn't find the spec I wanted, but to be honest the 4 Series fit's the bill perfectly 😃
It would be interesting if you did a video of what dealers take notice of when they are looking at a car on paper rather than in the flesh, what are the red flags and particular stats that should worry us tourists but we're usually not aware of.
I’m 19. I just bought my second car in April. It’s a 2.4L Honda accord I-VTEC EX. It had 59k miles when I got it for £5,995. The insurance is somehow cheaper than my first car, seat Ibiza 1.4, and I absolutely love it. It has everything I need. It’s comfortable, reliable, decently quick, and has all the gadgets. I’m probably one of the only 19 year olds with a Honda accord because I doubt it’s very sought after but I would highly recommend. It really is a bang for your buck.
I think one of the best bang for buck’s is one of the taxi drivers favourites the Skoda superb it has lots of legroom and a big boot a specially the estate if you go for a diesel good mpg
@@nigelparish2631 Yep, all these electric car owners are oblivious to the amount of environmental destruction their batteries in their cars will create long term. You’re much better off buying a newer diesel or any petrol car. The carbon footprint from those being created is now long gone, not only that, but you only have to wait 3 minutes to re-fill it instead of 45 to charge up.
Best bang for your buck will always be a Vauxhall. A year old they tend to lose 50%. I bought a 2014 Vauxhall GTC Auto in 2015 (19 months old) with 13k on the clock for £7k. 8 years and an extra 10k later, I've been offered £8k for it. All it has cost me apart from usual running costs is a new battery, a new (plastic) thermostat housing and two front tyres.
I really enjoy your videos Matt. Whether it's sourcing cars for a friend or turning a car around or searching the Web for different types of car. Great channel. 👍
Great video. You mentioned that the bottom has fallen out of the EV market, that's super interesting. Have seen long queues waiting for working charging points this summer
It's not that. It's the Tesla price cuts and the market getting a load of model 3s that have just ended lease. It's a good option that's driven the prices down of the other options that had been artificially high for a long time
As mentioned, EV prices were chopped when Tesla introduced lower pricing start of this year - and as well as Tesla, a large number of Zoes are rolling off their lease and there are some brilliant bargains to be had. Tesla Superchargers are usually much better service than the rest of the public points but even then I have come across queueing - esp at busy time like lunch. I think ICE car prices will be walloped by the (I think unfair) ULEZ scheme expansions. But helped a little by much lower fuel prices. I even saw PRICE PARITY! for Diesel and Petrol the other day - never seen that in decades.
Love the E class coupe of that era, managed to bag myself the E500 as my weekend toy and it's aged well compared to other cars from 14 years ago, great performance and super smooth V8. I wouldn't discount the earlier 2009 - 2012 models based on no Bluetooth audio. They have bluetooth calls and you can enable bluetooth Audio in the hidden infotainment system menu. You cant skip songs from the wheel though but cradle your phone and you can easily tap to skip. Small price to pay if you're on a budget I'd say!
Unfortunately touching your phone in any way while in control of a car even in a car park (if the engine is on) is illegal and will land you with 6 points and a large fine. A good Bluetooth system definitely has a much greater appeal now.
I think Jag XJ's and early L405 RR's fit into this category, both can be had for under £20k (XJ's for under £10k easily!) and with a private plate everyone else thinks you're a millionaire! ...another but slightly higher priced option (£30-35k ish) is the Aston Martin Rapide! 👍
I went from AUDI S5 to AUDI S7 as my daily last year. $1000 tune (via phone with options for a subtle crackle etc) at Stage one takes it to 580HP, replace one of the resonators for an X-Pipe, a $400 AppleCarplay interface and it makes a very compelling proposition. Actual proper buttons, ivory leather interior, Thermal Imaging camera (kid you not) and its a terrific and compelling 4 wheel drive 5 door hatchback. The problem is - where to next? I probably have to double what I paid to make a discernible upgrade. Fortunately I have a little NA MX5 for the weekend, and an old diesel Disco for the fishing and bush. New Zealand says hello!
The MK1 Lexus GS450h SE-L is incredible value for money. 340hp from a car that is mechnically bullet-proof, with adaptive cruise, keyless entry and start, heated and cooled seats etc, for less than £5,000.
Reliability is almost a given, with Lexus! A friend of mine was most put-out, when he had to change a headlamp bulb - AFTER A WHOLE 7 YEARS!!! Awwww! And that's all he had to worry about, as nothing else needed doing!
Class video again Matt !! Really makes you think where to put your cash on selection. Last 5 years I've had a Audi TTS, FK8 Civic Type R, BMW M140i, Toyota GR Yaris, Cupra290 and a Hyundai I20N. Just swapped out into a Kia Stinger GTS. A hell of of a car for the money, a hidden gem thats rare too....still with 3 years warranty left too !
I know this comment was posted months ago but I’d love to hear how you’d rate that list of cars you’ve had in some sort of order. Both the TTS and M140 are in my list of potential next cars. The cupra 290/300 are supposedly incredible too.
@@benllewelyn98 nope same power and same bombproof M57 engine in all E series from 56 plate thru to 13 plate when it ended with the E92 coupe. Then went to N57 for the F series which some had issues.
Spot on the E9X 335d is a gem in the rough, M57 is a very stout engine that can make over 600bhp with no internal changes. 45mpg on a run, affordable to buy, and a great aftermarket for parts.
Hard to believe that this is a you tube channel it's so well put together and presented it could easily be a TV program.... It's a joy to watch I really enjoyed the MR2 video 👌👌
Followed your previous B4B advice and found a tidy Lexus SC430 with 50k miles - so much fun and such a great drive - and a double result as the wife doesn't like the open top driving nor the low down seat so I get the car to myself.
I remember watching a fascinating video where this American Bloke had bought a "cheap" Bentley Continental GT on an impulse at an auction. The boot latch was dicky and an EXCHANGE unit was something crazy like four grand. It rapidly got worse as he then discovered it had been under water - probably in a flood somewhere. All he thought it needed was a touch up of the front bumper!!!
Yes 100 percent correct. I remember in 2007 looking at 3 series and 5 series. Not that much difference in 2nd hand price but cost of insurance, maintenance etc was probably why people went for the 3 series more
It’s a brave man choosing to buy any of your choices without having to keep around 3k plus to cover for any repairs. Then there’s the breakdown anxiety worrying about the expense keeping it on the road. I long for your bravado Matt and applaud your love of cars but some are watchers and not doers and I am, sadly, one of the latter. That’s one of the reasons I follow your channel religiously 😢
I had a 64 plate E250 coupe. Very comfy, great cruiser, reliable and surprisingly practical with the pillarless design. Although the engine was the weak point, fine mpg and performance but felt like something from the 90's in terms of refinement.
im looking to get one myself in regards to being weak engine wise on the e250 do you mean in regards to power or reliability I've been under the illusion they are quite bulletproof
@@Seewhogetsluckyfirst power was fine, mpg in the low 40's, it's just the engine felt quite agricultural and didn't suit the car. Apparently the 220 is smoother and only slightly slower
Good call on the E Class coupe, I have an E250 Sport Petrol and its a brilliant car. Looks and drives so well. The basic shape hasnt really changed so they have aged incredibly well
Can’t speak more highly of the 8 series, my dad bought a 70 plate earlier in the year from BMW with 20k miles and most of the options boxes ticked, and it was £40k. I cannot think of any other car that even gets close for the money.
Finally I hear Mat talk about my own car an Audi RS5! They're a lot more rare and expensive in Sweden, but still amazing value for what you get... that V8 is mental
Blimey Matt, if you can't believe how affordable a 20 grand Audi is, I think we must be living on different planets! I could only dream about spending that much on a car. Nonetheless it was an entertaining glimpse into the world of high end motoring for those who can indulge in it. Keep up the good work!
@0:54 I wouldn't mind a little bit of gas guzzling. Where I live LPG cost about €0.79/litre and the conversion costs about €3,500. You break even much earlier with a gass guzzler. 😊
Had a E250 CDI BlueEf 2011 Coupe for a year until last September... 60+ MPG easy on motorway... 120 mph easy without any hassle on anywhere u can legally do this speed ;) .. Such reliable car.. Only had one problem and was fixed for 250 quids, which was the signal module failure... For a year i did between Selby-Leeds (for studying masters) back and forth every day, did 18000 miles, NEVER HAD ME A PROBLEM ... SUCH RELIABLE AND CHEAP TO RUN CAR... and it is an E "CLASS"
Like the i3 - in its day a bit oddball/left field like the Audi A2 but much more so - a bold concept that wasn't repeated. Its carbon fibre/aluminium body puts me off - repair costs/insurance - but it would be good to see what you think after trying one.
Not sure about that collection.. they'll all go wrong in so many different and expensive ways, prices may be tempting but the repair bills will be horrendous
They have depreciated MUCH less than their main rivals the C63 and M3/M4 which are now both in the bargain category. The main issue with the Giulia QV is that not many were sold so they are much rarer than their competitors on the used market.
I had a 3ltr amg sport clk 57 plate, 5 years ago amazing car. Had it 3 years, only depreciated a grand. Sold it used the cash as part of my house deposit.
Intrigued by the Tesla. Not for me at the moment, as I regularly have to do a journey of over 300 miles, and I've seen real problems with the availability of chargers at motorway service stations. However, what really puts me off the older Teslas is that statistically they were one of the most unreliable cars on the road, as bad as a Land Rover. Newer ones are better, but the demonstrated failure rates on older ones would worry me.
Mercedes E350 convertible is an excellent choice. Search for cars with Harmon Kardon sound as they usually have lots of extras. Also look for cars 2011 on with the straight DRL lights as they’re 265bhp and lower tax bracket. All facelift cars are euro6. Brilliant comfortable mile muncher.
You mentioned the CAT S status of one of the cars. I'd like to hear your thoughts on buying a previously written off vehicle. I think that could be an interesting video.
He did mention it on a recent video I watched - brief summary was OK if a decent saving on a cheap-to-begin-with car, but not on a £50K car - you'll save a bit but won't enjoy selling it on later.
I spent a bit more than the cars you're showing, but for 43k, I got myself an Aston Martin rapide s. It's a 6 litre v12, 40k miles on a 14 plate. Seriously quick and sounds like a jet plane when I put my foot down. Plus, I'm driving about in an Aston. It was either this or something like a merc a35 brand new. The merc would be more expensive 😂 I'll drive the Aston for 12 months, sell for the purchase price, or very close to, and buy another monster. This is how I like to have cars. Had a porche 911 before this and a e46 m3 before that. Didn't lose a penny on either. Lovely!
Nice one Matt food for thought. I would look at the Kia Stinger GT at that price range. A definite Q car. Also Skoda Superb 280 estate or saloon, VW Arteon maybe.
I don't know why but I can't ever get my head round paying 20 grand for a car with 100k on the clock.. it seems ridiculous. Is this a common train of thought ?
Me too. I think my reluctance stems from the 70s and 80s when most cars were finished at 100k. Just can’t shake it, no matter what the car and despite the ‘motorway miles’ argument. Always look for under 30k haha
Matt, you missed out on one of the best cars around at the moment, the Alfa Romeo Gulia Veloce 2.0l, 280ps just a few years old with average mileage and you have a bargain, plus its an Alfa, the coolest badge of any car, except Aston Martin of course.
Try a BMW Z4 from 2012 onwards. They are sporty little coupes and offer roof down driving for when summer comes. Under 9 grand will buy a good one, either straight 6 or a later 2 litre 4 pot.
I definitely would prefer something with lower running costs myself but that’s not really the point of the name of course it’s all about what the most sporty or luxurious care for the lowest price definitely crazy what you can get over there given the depreciation great video as always Matt
Great video Matt. I consider the C7 chevrolet corvette stingray to be a great bargain, with prices anywhere between £40,000 to £60,000, it's so much car for the money.
I just part-exchanged my 2010 E200 Coupe, which I believe you can see the listing if you scroll a bit further by the time you record this video, but sold now.
I've just bought a 2023 RS5 coupe with £10k of extras which has a 3.0 V6 twin turbo however the sweet spot is definitely the earlier, but utterly glorious, 4.2 V8. What a powerplant!
I think in terms of 'bang for buck' cars like Mercedes E class or the CLS, Jaguar XF or BMW 5 series are prime candidates but maintenance costs can be high. Good service history is essential 👍
Nice bargains out there. These expensive luxury cars that you've just mentioned depreciate quite a lot.Even these second hand units are expensive to run and maintain
as well as wheeler dealin', do you ever do car upgrades / aftermarket do's and dont's? Will be buying my first Merc soon and would be great to hear some wise words from someone I trust
Would love to see you in an BMW i3, be interesting to get your take on it. I've driven a 120ah and the i3s version both proper nippy and fun and interesting, plus the one pedal driving thing is quite fun when you get used to it, especially around peaks roads 😊
I've been looking at the B8 Audis a whole ton recently. If you're looking at RS5's you should consider RS4. Same chassis, same engine, like 95% of the parts are the same but you get an Estate / Wagon 5-door body, they cost about the same too. Alternatively you could go for an S4, S4 Avant, S5, S5 Cabriolet or S5 Sportback. They all also share the same bits but instead of 4.2l V8 they use 3.0 Supercharged V6 making around 333 hp. They are cheaper to buy, tax, maintain and run and you get much more choice in body shapes.
I was taken for a drive in one of these and it sounded amazing. that was until the driver turned off the artificial engine noise being injected in to the speakers. Then it sounded like a little 1.6 litre getting the living daylights thrashed out of it. The dashboard was a bit 1980s Red LED too but still a fantastic looking piece of automotive art.
I3 is a great car, the body is carbon fibre and it's rear wheel drive plus the doors open outwards from the centre which is brilliant for baby seats in the back. Never owned one but had one for a loan can when in for service and it's super quick off the line to 30/40mph, lots of fun too!
How about a BMW 2 series coupe? Really nice looking, little practical, sporty looking car. Would love to see one on the channel. I know your not a fan of the 1 series on which they are based, but I think it's a far nicer car. Also the styling reminds me of the old 3 series coupe but a more modern version. Nice proportions, no over sized kidney grill either.
Great video Matt. Thinking of cars you’ve never reviewed, I’m wondering what you think about Mazda as a brand? I think both the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 are great looking cars.
Thank you for this great video! I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention any Jaguar, there are such bargains around... Regarding the 6 series, would you stay away from the 650i? Or maybe worth the reliability risk?

Great show as always Matt, BMW F10 M5 is a real bargain, 560bhp for £30k , bought one 2 years ago some can be had for as low as 20, heard some horror stories about reliability but touchwood its been fine for 2 years. My heart still comes out my chest when i plant my right foot.
Me too - right after watching one of Matt's videos :)
Tbh if i had one i would buy a high mileage one and replace all the common faults for maybe 5k on top of the 17k for a ragged one, and have the peace of mind that it should not spin a bearing randomly.
Good on you mate, enjoy that power you only live once
Ahh yes the infamous rear tyre shredder with little to no grip off a standstill yes yes 👍
Are they still quick post 60,000 miles? My friend has a stage 1 (pulley, map) 2005 e55, he says it can toast F10 m5's. Or is he lying? 😮
Great list, think the Jaguar F-Type is also a bargain. 25k for a 2014 3 litre supercharged V6. Gorgeous sports car, 50k miles
it's end of life and will destruct your wallet at around 70k miles
I always think an older Maserati would be nothing but unreliable, probably unwarranted but that's the feeling I get in my bones.

Yes, just see what your Grandad is driving and buy one of them. My brother has a Honda Jazz for this reason - great little car and cheap as chips.

So the rear tyres are 9 years old ? If so, they are probably 3-4 years overdue for replacing due to age. Note : I know nothing

I thought this was a car forum not a hifi talking shop
Unfortunately touching your phone in any way while in control of a car even in a car park (if the engine is on) is illegal and will land you with 6 points and a large fine. A good Bluetooth system definitely has a much greater appeal now.

Make a list of SUVs you think are best value for money

Do I need to add to the long list of comments praising you for your videos? I am addicted to your channel!
The reason they are seemingly cheap is you'll need to trade your kidneys to fix them when they go wrong!
Not that much difference in 2nd hand price but cost of insurance, maintenance etc was probably why people went for the 3 series more
I don't understand. Aren't those German luxury cars pretty expensive to maintain, specially the one +10y?
I guess that's why people are willing to sell them for a song.
It’s a brave man choosing to buy any of your choices without having to keep around 3k plus to cover for any repairs. Then there’s the breakdown anxiety worrying about the expense keeping it on the road.

Jaguar I Pace, some great bargains on these currently, Matt.
He did mention it on a recent video I watched - brief summary was OK if a decent saving on a cheap-to-begin-with car, but not on a £50K car - you'll save a bit but won't enjoy selling it on later.
i dont think the people asking for the best bang for thier bucks meant 20k cars, my vibe is that they wanted' budget' cars
Used cars are cheap in the UK.
Most of them are double in euro's the Netherlands.

Cheers Matt. Good information and good to watch as always. Any chance of a episode about ev’s and the state of the used car market regarding them?
